Greetings!
 | | Steve Roth |
If summer is ordinarily a time for kicking back, it seems someone forgot to tell my colleagues at PRSA-LA.
After our hugely popular July event focused on healthcare communications, we are continuing our focus on the upcoming PRism Awards and fall programming schedule.
As a reminder, the early-entry deadline for the 49th Annual PRism Awards is coming up fast. The PRism Awards are open to all public relations practitioners who work in the Greater Los Angeles area or who have completed work for LA-based clients. PRSA-LA members can save $50 per entry on submissions made on or before midnight on August 1. The final deadline for entries is August 25. The show itself will take place at the Crystal Ballroom at the Beverly Hills Hotel on November 6.
By now you also should have received a copy of the PRSA-LA Member Survey in your inbox. If you haven't already sent in your reply, please do so once you're done reading this month's newsletter. The survey's 20 questions will take less than five minutes to answer, but provide a wealth of valuable feedback to guide the chapter's future programming decisions. Contact Mindy at 818.582.3233 or mindy@prsala.org if you didn't receive a survey invitation.
And speaking of invitations, I was recently invited to an interview on Time Warner Cable's Local Edition where I discussed PRSA, our chapter, and what we in the PR profession do. The segment will air on Time Warner and CNN Local Edition, and can also be found online.
Thank you for your ongoing involvement and I hope to see you at an upcoming PRSA-LA event! Sincerely, Steve Roth, PRSA-LA President Principal, OutThink Partners

PRism Awards Recap Series
Children's Hospital Demonstrates PR Value with Multiple PRism Wins
PRSA-LA's 2013 PRism Awards, which honor the best of the best in public relations campaigns and tactics executed by agencies and practitioners in the Greater Los Angeles Area, will be handed out November 6, at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The Call For Entries can be found on our website. Submissions are due Sunday, August 25, but members can save $50 and non-members can save $40 if entries are received by August 1. We asked DeAnn Marshall, MHA, Senior Vice President, Chief Development and Marketing Officer at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, about the awards her department won at the 2012 Prism Awards Show last November. Children's Hospital Los Angeles was the recipient of the 2012 PRSA-LA President's Award, presented to the team with the most PRism Awards. All told, the department won seven PRisms and eight Awards of Excellence. The PRism winners were: "The Big Move: Years of Planning Culminate in the Move to the Marion and John E. Anderson Pavilion," Healthcare Programs, One-Time Event; "Website Redesign for Pediatric Academic Medical Center," Digital Public Relations Tactics (Online Communications), Websites; "Think C," Writing, Speech; "Imagine Annual Report, Children's Hospital Los Angeles," Annual Report, Non-profit Organizations; "Move Day Media Kit," Media/Press Kits; "STAR Service Brochure," Brochure; and "E-Newsletter: Monthly Dose of News and Events," Newsletter (Hardcopy or Electronic), Non-profit Organizations. Why did Children's Hospital Los Angeles enter the PRism Awards?DM: While the main measure of a campaign's or tactic's success is that it accomplishes your goals in the marketplace, it's also important to gauge the perspective of our peers in public relations and marketing. Though we may have done something well, we're always striving to do things better (it's even in our tagline!), and these awards help us evaluate that. Children's Hospital Los Angeles had also just settled into a major brand redesign and awareness campaign, and we were excited to get some professional feedback on elements of a campaign that has already elevated our brand in the community. What does winning a PRism mean to your department?DM: Winning a PRism Award tells us that we're on the right track. We can also take that back to our leadership (hospital executives and the Board of Trustees, in our case), and confirm what we've already been telling them--that this is the best way to get our message out.How did you celebrate your win?DM: We took a moment to congratulate ourselves at our weekly staff meeting. But just a moment--then it was back to building even more brand equity for Children's Hospital Los Angeles!
