The University of Arkansas Department of Art presents Stationary Realms from September 8 - October 24 in the Fine Arts Center Gallery. The exhibition includes an artist lecture Thursday, September 4, at 5:30 p.m. in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, Room 250 of Vol Walker Hall, followed immediately by an artist reception. The events are free, and the public is welcome.
"The Department of Art at the University of Arkansas is thrilled to display the work of outstanding artists Jane Callister, Erin Harmon, Jennifer Steinkamp, and Mary Temple in the Stationary Realms exhibition," said Marc Mitchell, curator and director of exhibitions for the Department. "While these acclaimed artists are all dealing with the landscape, their artworks address diverse themes within the genre."
Stationary Realms, an exhibition curated by Cynthia Norse Thompson, addresses issues of place, loss, and beauty through disparate views of the landscape. Each artist in the exhibition utilizes scale and weight to explore both visual and conceptual implications of depicting the environment: Callister's painterly landscapes deftly intertwine process and imagery; each painting celebrates a material investigation that generates fictional yet enchanting landscapes. Harmon creates carefully orchestrated artworks that emphasize a systematic order that is then applied to her landscapes; like a terrarium, every facet is scrutinized to the point where it becomes synthetic. Steinkamp's video projections explore the relationship between actual and perceived space. Often focusing on trees and other natural phenomena, Steinkamp creates artworks that blur the line between observation and object. Known best for her installation work, Temple considers the boundaries between fact and fiction. Often presenting the viewer with a shadow on the wall or the silhouette of a plant, Temple creates environments that straddle the line between documentation and fabrication.

sUgAR,The University of Arkansas Student Art Gallery is proud to present work from the Fay Jones School of Architecture, titled "Navigating Nevelson." This collection of student work is generated from Louis Nevelson's piece "Night Zag Wall" located within the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art's permanent collection. "Night Zag Wall" is compiled of geometric and organic found objects to create a matte black wall sculpture, inspiring the techniques and creativity of the student work. Using both traditional architectural drawing and experimentation with collage, collagraphs, and digital modeling and output, students will be presenting several varieties of interpretation in a two-dimensional and three-dimensional sense. The opening reception for this event will be held on September 4, 2014 from 6:00 - 9:00pm, with further open gallery hours in the month of September to be determined and available at http://facebook.com/sugaruark.
The Fay Jones School of Architecture equips students with both traditional and non-traditional forms of professional practice through the use of fundamental principles and techniques. Through critical analysis, skill development and educational knowledge, students are prepared for the responsibility of leadership in their communities. With a national reputation of producing outstanding designers, the Fay Jones School of Architecture is proud of its development within the student body and outside communities. "Navigating Nevelson" will also be exhibited at Indiana University Center for Art and Design in Columbus, IN this Fall.
The sUgAR gallery is an interdepartmental exhibition space featuring the visual research of students, faculty, and visiting lecturers from the Department of Art and Fay Jones School of Architecture representing the Departments of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Interior Design. sUgAR is made possible by the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Art, the Fay Jones School of Architecture, and the University of Arkansas' Facilities Management.
