A Message from the Editor
Hi, everyone!

Habitat for Humanity gives people many reasons to smile.

People have made life-long friends while volunteering; learned new skills; shared their life experiences; taught others construction skills; and made a house their home because of Habitat - all of which are great reasons to smile.

Do you have a story of how Habitat has made you smile? We'd love to hear it! Please email me (Clicking on my picture below or my name under the Staff section will bring up my email.) with any story you'd like to share!

Have a great day,
Kayla

Time to Meet the Deputy
Joining board of directors president, Maureen Otwell, in leading our affiliate's charge is Joel Skinner, the new board vice president. This is Joel's second year on the board (having joined in March 2014).

While originally from Indiana, Joel is proud to be an adopted Badger since 1997. He and his wife, Carol, (with whom he has three sons - Jay, Charlie, and Willie) live in Town of St. Joe, which is north of North Hudson, and are members of St. Patrick's Church in Hudson.

Joel and his wife own Skinner and Associates in Hudson. Joel, who has been a lawyer for over 31 years, practices intellectual property law. This includes patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets.

When not working, he spends his time volunteering with the Hudson Community Foundation, St. Croix Valley Bar Association, Hudson Noon Rotary Club, Red Lake Association, and the Hudson Grocery Cooperative.

We are extremely lucky to have Joel on our board, and we are excited to see what this next year brings him!

Let's Paint the Town with Valspar!
Valspar Paint has partnered with Habitat for Humanity since 1979 and has donated more than $35 million in cash and in-kind goods since that time. Valspar was also a main supporter and driving force for Habitat's A Brush with Kindness program, which is a branch of the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative.

Now, in honor of Valspar's National Neighborhood Week, which is May 9-14, Valspar donated over 2,000 gallons of paint to each of our ReStores. Valspar stated, "We know that the ReStore is an important fundraising channel for your efforts, and we want to provide this...donation that can help you generate funds while enabling your customers to experience Valspar paint."

So, if you are in the need for paint in the next few weeks, thanks to Valspar, you know where to go!
Staff Update
If you've ever been on one of our construction sites in the last eight years, you've undoubtedly met Joel Palmquist. Joel has served our affiliate formally as the construction site supervisor since 2008, but his background with Habitat started almost thirty years prior. While at church one day, Joel heard a testimony from a couple who uprooted their lives to go to Utah for Habitat for Humanity. He was so moved and inspired by the couple's presentation that he started volunteering with Habitat.

As a carpenter and former University of Wisconsin - River Falls grounds and maintenance employee, Habitat was right up Joel's alley. He quickly became involved with our affiliate by volunteering to sit on the board and chairing the construction committee before being added on officially as staff. As staff, Joel's responsibilities included leading home construction and partnering with volunteers, donors, and material suppliers to ensure that construction ran as smoothly as possible.

Building those relationships and seeing the teamwork that goes into coordinating the affiliate and the builds, Joel said, are his favorite part of Habitat along with how a new home can have such a profound impact on the homeowners' lives, especially the children's.

However, after almost thirty years of service to Habitat and eight years to our affiliate, Joel has decided to move on from St. Croix Valley and explore other opportunities. Please join us in wishing Joel good luck in all of his future endeavors.
Joel Palmquist
