THE CHARLES SUMNER SCHOOL IS HEALTHY, ACTIVE SCHOOL!

So much is happening around Wellness at the Sumner!  In terms of Physical Education and Physical Activity, Coach Maddie and Playworks has increased the amount of safe and fun physical activity, both during recess and Classroom Game Time, and it has been a great addition to our Physical Education program, run by Mr. C. (Mr. Carrizosa) and Mr. Graham!  This year in Phys Ed, the 2nd through 5th graders were able to participate in the Boston Bikes Program, where they got bicycle education and training.

The school promotes Health Education through using the Second Step anti-bullying curriculum school-wide, as well as offering dental and nutrition education. There are also vision and dental screenings provided and the full-time school nurse, Luciann McMullen, provides injury and illness care, as well as medication as needed, to our school population. The Sumner also partners with the Home for Little Wanderers and Children's Hospital to provide individual and group mental health support and crisis intervention services (see Partnerships pages).

We are working toward having only healthy treats for birthdays and celebrations, and having more non-food-based rewards. You can help us by exploring fruit-based or healthier treats when you have birthday celebrations in school for your child. In addition, there are no vending machines (for staff or children), and there are no longer candy-based fundraisers.

The Sumner also is working on becoming an environmentally healthy, green school, as well!  We participate in the BPS Recycling program, in which several fifth graders volunteer. We also are implementing a strict green-cleaners only policy. Our gardening club supports a more educational, safe, and beautiful schoolyard.

We also have been working towards improving staff wellness. Nurse Lucy and Trina Heinisch, the Wellness Coordinator, send out Wellness Wednesday tips that include fitness ideas, nutrition and recipes, and safety info. Mr. C. also runs very intense staff fitness classes weekly, and an incredible staff yoga class was held this year at the local Akasha Yoga Studio in Roslindale Village (some parents joined in, too!)

The Wellness Team has also been asked to present at the upcoming Boston Public Schools Wellness Summit!  We will be presenting on Ms Jeannette's INCREDIBLE Before and After School Program!  She has embraced the spirit of physical activity and building a life-long love of being active! Students in her program are able to take advantage of Kung Fu, Zumba, Salsa, BOKS (exercise through games), and Yogamath!

Ms. Molina's class went on a field trip to Garden In The Woods to learn more about plant life and nature. Students had an in depth learning experience with nature. They had a hands on opportunity to explore and make connection to our plant life unit.

SUMMER LEARNING

Summer vacation is now just a few short weeks away. All families should begin to prepare for their child's summer learning! Many of our students regress 2-3 months during the summer break and many cannot afford to lose even a week's worth of learning because they are already so far behind.  Look for information in student packages given out on Step-Up Day and check out these links for hints on how you can continue your child's learning though the summer:
