July/August Summer Highlight
Summer Day Camp - Twenty-six children ages 8 to 12 will embark on five weeks of adventure and immerse themselves in educational and fun activities associated
with weekly themes that include Science, Arts, and Sports/Fitness.
Bro/Sis Summer Teen Camp - Nearly 20 young people, ages 12 to 14, will participate in a month long expeditionary academic, social, and recreational programming. Members will participate in a book club and go on field trips to museums, art studios and businesses. Our teens will also experience fitness and wellness day retreat
s that will engage them in yoga, nature hikes, intramural games and swimming. They will also learn about preparing for emergencies and
embark on culinary arts adventures that will explore the world of healthy food options including raw foods
and smoothies.
International Study Program (ISP) - On July 2nd, 12 members in ISP will make an unprecedented trip to Haiti and the Dominican Republic where they will
embark on a journey of adventure and learning for 30 days. After spending the past six months learning about the history and culture of both countries, they will have the opportunity to spend a month experiencing each country, meeting with government entities, visiting communities and immersing themselves in the culture of their international neighbors.
GAIA Environmental Program -Members of Gaia, Bro/Sis Environmental Program will open The
Hamilton Heights Youth Green Market on July 10th. The market will run one day a week and provide fresh food options to area consumers. Our hope is that it become a catalyst for creating consistent green food accessibility throughout the West Harlem community.
Summer Youth Employment Opportunity (SYEO) -SYEO will provide workshops on building interviewing, resume development and job searching skills. Our youth participants will gain job preparation and
entry-level work experience that will equip them with the tools needed to succeed in the job market. At career day members will meet with professionals from
different sectors. Through out the summer, members will go on site visits to various businesses to explore the variety of career options in the non-profit, government and corporate arena. They will also obtain entry-level work skills through their work as garden stewards in
the Frank White Community Garden.
Summer Liberation School - Fifteen youth will develop the skills needed to become community organizers
by learning about the role of young people in
movements for social change and about pressing
social issues today.
Future Foundation Program (FFP) - With contributed funding from the Office of Manhattan District Attorney, nearly 40 young people (ages 12 to 16) from Central Harlem will participate in FFP. This four-week anti-violence program will expose youth to various opportunities in education, employment and culture. The goal of FFP
is to broaden participants' horizons and knowledge of self, enabling them to make improved critical decisions in their lives and advance their emotional intelligence. Participants learn Bro/Sis' youth development curricula, attend college tours, visit NYC landmarks, and attend workforce development sessions.
