HTS Top 5-What You Need to Know

Right Now!

TopOneI am an Eligible Provider.  Can I switch between the Medicare and Medicaid Meaningful Use EHR Incentive Programs in 2015?

NO.  A provider could have switched between programs one time through the meaningful use reporting year 2014. In 2015, unless it is your first MU reporting year, you may no longer switch between Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive programs.

CMS MU Tipsheet dated 5/2013 states:

"EPs may receive an incentive payment based on the criteria of the program under which they elect to receive payment (Medicare or Medicaid). Before 2015, an EP may switch between the programs one time after the first incentive payment is initiated"

Read more about this and other MU regulations.

TopTwoDo I need to worry about Stage 3 Meaningful Use right now?

On March 20, Stage 3 Meaningful Use Proposed Final Rule was released. You are probably thinking - "I'm not even sure I understand Stage 2, and now there's Stage 3 - what do I have to do now!"  Relax! Providers and Hospitals are not expected to meet Stage 3 criteria until 2017. We recommend you continue to focus on whatever Stage of Meaningful Use you are in now.

If you are ready to look ahead, you can prepare for Stage 3 by becoming familiar with and moving towards electronic reporting of Clinical Quality Measure data in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Electronically reporting CQMs is a large part of Stage 3. Start asking your vendor what you need to do to report CQMs electronically and begin fine tuning the data being collected by your EHR, so when it does come time to report you have accurate data going to CMS.

For more information, check out electronic CQM reporting for hospitals and clinics/providers.

If you're ready for more information on Stage 3, the PROPOSED final ruling can be accessed at the link below. The comment period for the proposed ruling ends May 29, 2015.

Need Help?  Take a look at our Meaningful Use Assistance or contact us directly.

TopThreeWhy should we prepare quarterly MU Audit Documentation?

HTS recommends that all Eligible Hospitals and Eligible Providers complete quarterly audit documentation that includes your Print Screens and Patient Lists. This is to prepare for the possible change to a 2015 MU 90-day reporting period.

Need help with your MU audits?  See our HIPAA Security Assistance, or contact HTS for more information.

TopFourYES - your health records may be targeted!!   In February and March of 2015, both Anthem and Premera Blue Cross' breached personal data was estimated at a staggering $91 million!

In February 2015, it was announced that Anthem, the nation's second largest health insurer, was notifying 80 million members of this breach.  This is possibly the biggest data breach ever reported.

In March 2015, it happened again.  Another health plan was targeted with hackers gaining access to the financial and medical information of 11 million members of Washington state-based Premera Blue Cross, a not-for-profit plan whose corporate clients include Microsoft and Starbucks.

Some have suggested the attackers in both cases may be the same Chinese spies, and access gained to personal data is estimated at a staggering $91 million.

Need help protecting your patients' records?  See our HIPAA Security Assistance, or contact HTS for more information.

TopFiveCan my practice register as a group for 2015 PQRS? When do I need to register?

Group Registration for 2015 PQRS is now open, through June 31, 2015.  If your practice has 2 or more providers, you are eligible to register as a group. Depending upon your situation, this group option may be the right choice and more efficient to manage for the PQRS and Value Modifier programs.

There are several steps you must go through to register as a group, and CMS is hosting a webinar on How to Register for the PQRS Group Practice Reporting Option in 2015 on Thursday, April 16, 1:30-3 pm ET

Topics include
  • Learn how to obtain an IACS account
  • Learn how to use the secure, web-based PV-PQRS Registration System to register for your 2015 PQRS Group Practice Reporting Option (GPRO) reporting mechanism
  • Learn the 2015 reporting criteria for PQRS group practices reporting via GPRO
  • Learn how the VM will affect Medicare payments for physician solo practitioners and physicians in groups of 2 or more Eligible Professionals (EPs) in 2017, based on participation in the PQRS
  • And more...
