     Yes No
YES, if participating in MU in 2014, you will need to be using Stage 2 certified EHR technology (certified to the 2014 Edition EHR certification criteria).

This is the case regardless of whether you are still attesting to Stage 2 or have already moved to Stage 2.

Anticipation is building about the new Health Insurance Marketplace.

An important countdown begins October 1, 2013 when open enrollment begins for millions of Americans who never had health insurance to shop for health insurance.

This is an historic time for those Americans who never had health insurance who had to go without insurance after losing a job or becoming sick, or who had been turned down because of a pre-existing condition.

You Need to Take Action!

The January 17th HIPAA Final Rule Modifications

On January 17, Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the final omnibus rule which greatly enhances a patient's privacy protections, provides individuals new rights to their health information, and strengthens the government's ability to enforce the law.  Significant modifications include -

  • Making business associates directly liable for compliance with certain HIPAA Privacy and Security Provisions

  • Expanding an individual's right to receive electronic copies of their health information and restrict disclosures to a health plan concerning treatment for which the individual has paid in full

  • Modifying and redistributing a CE's notice of privacy practices

"This final omnibus rule marks the most sweeping changes to the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules since they were first implemented," said HHS Office for Civil Rights Director Leon Rodriguez.

"These changes not only greatly enhance a patient's privacy rights and protections, but also strengthen the ability of my office to vigorously enforce the HIPAA privacy and security protections, regardless of whether the information is being held by a health plan, a health care provider, or one of their business associates."

Reforms of Regulatory Requirements to Save Health Care Providers $676 Million Annually

US Department of Health & Human Services

February 4, 2013

Reforms to Medicare regulations identified as unnecessary, obsolete, or excessively burdensome on hospitals, and health care providers would save nearly $676 million annually and $3.4 billion over 5 years.
pig save money
The proposed rule is designed to help health care providers to operate more efficiently by getting rid of regulations that are out of date or no longer needed.

For example, a key provision reduces the burden on very small critical access hospitas, as well as rural health clinics and federally qualified health centers, by eliminating the requirement that a physician be held to an excessively prescriptive schedule for being onsite once every two weeks.
