Thornberry Custom Builders Inc. Newsletter
January 2016

Happy New Year!  We hope you had a wonderful holiday season!  With the holidays behind us and business in full swing, we here at Thornberry Custom Builders, Inc. cannot wait to see what 2016 brings!

Currently, we are seeing great activity in the New Construction market throughout Charlotte County and look forward to seeing that trend continue.  If you know anyone looking to get into the trades whether it be framing, masonry, HVAC, etc. there is a huge need in our marketplace for that currently.  Feel free to contact me and I can connect you with the right people.  Or, our regional Builders Association (CDBIA) is a great resource for this.

Please enjoy another edition of our Newsletter and, as always, welcome any questions, feedback, etc.

Sincerely,

TJ Thornberry

~Happenings~

As a proud Board Member of The Charotte-Desoto Building Industry Association I was thrilled to be a part of the "Mortgage Burning" celebration after our General Monthly Meeting on January 5, 2016.  The CDBIA worked hard to bring costs down and stay a stable voice and support system throughout the construction downturn.  To have come through the "great recession" and see the progress we have now PLUS to have been able to pay off the mortgage on our building is a huge accomplishment!  Below are a couple of pictures from the mortgage burning....

 Monthly Home Feature Showcase

Every month we like to bring useful information to you about home styles, design features, or construction lingo.  This month's subject is....

Window Casings

Double Hung vs. Single Hung Windows
Double Hung Windows are popular throughout the country.  They have two operable sashes allowing the window to be opened from the top or from the bottom.  The main advantage this offers is with air circulation.  When opened from both the top and the bottom, cool air can come in the bottom while warmer air exits through the top opening.  In addition, to the air flow benefit, many consumers find double hung windows to be the most aesthetically pleasing.

Left: Single hung    Right: Double Hung

Single hung windows look very similar to double hung windows with the main difference being that they only open from the bottom.  You'll find these used throughout many homes and the benefit is that they are less expensive than double hung windows and some find them easier to open and close.  The downside is that you don't get the better air circulation.

 Casement Windows

Casements are single-hinged windows that open outward.  They are operated by a hand crank and have become increasingly popular as of late.  This recent popularity can be attributed to their versatility and energy efficiency.  They let in a lot of natural light because they are not divided like a single or double hung window design.

 Casement Windows

Picture Windows

Picture windows are large fixed windows, meaning they do not open or close.  Because they are inoperable there are no mechanical parts that could break over time.  You often find picture windows used over doors or in vaulted ceilings where you want to let light in but there's no need for the window to operate.   The downside can be that they are not manufactured with any type of glazing, so they aren't entirely energy efficient and they offer no natural ventilation.
