Happy New Year to all!
Now that the dust is starting to settle from the holidays, we, at Thornberry Custom Builders, are embracing the new year and looking forward to a strong snowbird season.
2015 has started off with a bang! We've got 9 houses in progress and more to come...it's an exciting time for us, our homeowners, the building industry and Charlotte County! After years of a down market, it's really nice to be part of the upswing and making people's dreams come true.
When your Northern friends and family come down to visit (and escape the snow) have them give me a call and we'll show them how they can own their own piece of Paradise...and trade their boots for flip flops!
Sincerely,
TJ Thornberry

Homeowner Tips
This Old House Videos for useful DIY Fixes
There is a series of 15 DIY tips on the "This Old House" site.
How to Cure a Wobbly Toilet Here are some of their tips and a link to the video:
In this video, This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey shows how to fix that wobbly toilet by replacing the toilet flange. Steps: 1 Use a small sledgehammer and cold chisel to separate the old cast-iron closet flange from the toilet's drainpipe, known as the closet bend. 2 Pry free the loosened closet flange with a flat bar. 3 Set the new compression flange over toilet's drainpipe, and then trace around it with a marker. 4 Use a hammer and cold chisel to chop out any tile that's preventing the flange from sitting flat without wobbling. 5 Press the rubber gasket onto the new closet flange; be sure the gasket's tapered edge faces down. 6 Set the brass ring on top of the rubber gasket, and tap it down with the hammer. 7 Use a ratchet wrench to tighten the four stainless-steel screws that secure the flange to the floor. 8 Insert two new closet bolts into the slots in the closet flange. 9 Press a new wax ring tight to the flange. 10 Set the toilet on top of the flange, making sure the two closet bolts pass through the holes in the toilet's base. 11 Onto each closet bolt insert a white plastic base, brass washer and hex nut. 12 Alternately tighten each nut with a ratchet wrench, being very careful not to over-tighten them. 13 Trim the closet screws down to size with a close-quarter hacksaw, then snap on the plastic covers. 14 Reconnect the water-supply line to the toilet. 15 Turn on the water by opening the toilet's shut-off valve. 16 Allow the toilet to fill, then flush the toilet and check for leaks. 17 Grab each side of the toilet and try wiggling it. If necessary, very carefully tighten each closet bolt a little more.

Our Specialty: Modern Homes with Historic Detail!
Over the next few months we will be describing the features and influences that create specific styles that are popular here in SW Florida.
Key West or Conch Style Homes
Conch style homes originated in Key West in the 19th century, a creation of Bahamian immigrants. As people moved North, the Conch style followed, making its way into Miami, specifically into the Coconut Grove and Overtown areas.
Similar to the shotgun home, a Conch/Bahamian/Key West-style home was also originally built of wood, and had an elevated floor via mounting on posts or piers for air circulation.
Sometimes two-storied, but more commonly one, they featured full-front porches, high ceilings, large windows and louvered shutters "(Bahama shutters"). Horizontally installed weatherboarding or clapboarding, low gabled or hip roofs and metal or shingled roofs round out the Conch home's characteristics. Simple in exterior adornment, carved braces, brackets and/or rafter ends on porches were the only general types of ornamentation on these types of homes.
Today, as you walk through the neighborhoods of Key West you can enjoy the colorful exteriors of these picturesque homes. Each painted in a select choice from a rainbow of colors (pinks, bright blue, soft greens, yellows and even tangerine or lilac) with contrasting or coordinating trim and shutters they create a casual, fun, beachy, feeling.
In downtown Punta Gorda, there are a variety of homes that are styled and painted in the Key West fashion. In particular, houses that are being used as retail shops and restaurants (whether new construction or refurbished structures) in and around Sullivan Street and Taylor Street have taken on the colorful exteriors of the Conch home. It definitely creates an enjoyable shopping experience for our historic area!
