Well my pessimism with my Seminoles has paid off so far this year! It hasn't been pretty to say the le ast. My prediction is they will lose to one of our last two un-ranked opponents (Florida or GA Tech), so I'm not holding my breath for the play-offs and/or the National Title! See....I plan to stay the course!
On another note, I hope that you and yours have a great Thanksgiving filled with food, drink, good company and of course....more football!
Sincerely,
TJ Thornberry

After recently remodeling a condo for accessibility, I came to more fully realize the importance of planning for the future when building a home to accommodate the varying levels of use by the person or family that will live there.
A report by the AARP Public Policy Institute states that 71% of people 50 and older and 87% 65 and older want to "age in place." Aging in place is a term used to describe continued living in your home regardless of your age or level of ability. As we get older, however, our kitchens are not keeping up with our changing needs. Universal Design takes into consideration the needs of homeowners today, as well as in the future. Universal Design can be applied in new construction, as well as remodeling your existing home. To do that, you want to think about your kitchen from "floor to ceiling." You'll want a flooring surface that is easy to clean, easy on your back and knees, and is nonslip. A solid vinyl or rubber is sturdy and easy on your joints. Also easy on your joints is wood, but that may not be as easy to clean and water damage is a concern. Consider installing upper cabinets at a more comfortable height of 14 inches from the countertop, instead of 18 inches, making the higher shelves within reach (however, tall counter appliances may not fit). Choose cabinets with pull-out drawers for storage. Create knee space under your countertop for someone in seated position. Plan for differing countertop heights to allow users to sit. Select a smooth countertop which is easy to clean and think about surfaces that can stand up to heat, like granite and quartz. Choose loop pulls for cabinet hardware. Avoid knobs. Also consider soft-close systems. Look for hardware with shiny metal surface, as they are easier to see. Locate appliances at comfortable locations and heights. Consider wall ovens with side-hinged doors, installed at shoulder height. We used an undercounter micro drawer in our remodel. If you have a bar area, installing a second sink or small refrigerator can be very helpful. Lighting is critical in the kitchen. LED takes little space and can be used to light large areas, as well as inside cabinets and drawers, and under cabinets to light work surfaces. While only addressing kitchens in this column, many of these ideas can be used throughout the home, as well as specific design tips and products for bathrooms and other areas of the home. And the best news is...it doesn't have to look institutional! Call us for more information. |

Our Specialty: Modern Homes with Historic Detail!
Over the next few months we will be describing the features and influences that create specific styles that are popular here in SW Florida.
Spanish Mission Style
You may not know that there is another type of "Old Florida" home designed by Florida's earliest Spanish inhabitants. "Spanish Mission" is the technical name for homes like these whose strong rock/stucco construction and Mediterranean building styles and colors easily fit into the natural surroundings of Florida. | PG Woman's Club |
Very locally, the Punta Gorda Women's Club/Punta Gorda Historical Society building at 118 Sullivan Street, PG boasts a Spanish Mission style parapet (the low wall along its roof's edge), white stucco finish and flat roof, as does the Punta Gorda Historic Railroad Depot. While these two examples are true mission style, our local architecture has elevated the style to more traditional Spanish and Spanish Revival. Curves, arches, stucco exteriors, terracotta tile roofs, multi-roof lines and ornamental iron work (over windows or as gates) all add to our modern version of "Spanish" architecture. What better way to pay homage to our heritage here in Florida than to build an Old-Florida Style home using all of the latest building techniques and supplies that are available to us today in these modern times.

Projects in Process:
Condo - Renovating for Accessibility
Completed!
Even though we couldn't enlarge the footprint of the kitchen, we increased storage & accessibility and used some "tricks" to make the room seem larger.
The end walls which faced the dining room were removed for a more open feel. The dropped ceiling was taken out and raised to standard height. Then under cabinet lighting was added as well as large floor tiles to "expand" the visual look. Using a linen (off white) finish on the cabinets made the kitchen brighter, while the gold shades of the granite add a splash of color and a reflective surface to bounce light around the room.
 |
Kitchen - After - Fab remodel!
|
Because the kitchen is so narrow and the new wall cabinets reach the ceiling (for more storage) an innovative fan with very small blades (and a down light) was installed. The fan blades won't interfere with the cabinet doors when they're open and yet they move quite a bit of air. The refrigerator is counter depth which allows for more space for the wheelchair and access to the interior shelves.
The wall oven is lower than normal and both the dishwasher and microwave are drawer style to also aid with accessibility.

Kitchen - Before
|
While there were numerous small adjustments made to the rest of the condo, the other main remodel was the end of the hallway near the bedrooms. By relocating a doorway on an angle, we were able to create a wider space for direct wheelchair access.
