Our Specialty: Modern Homes with Historic Detail!
This month we are beginning a series feature on the many variations of custom homes we offer to fit your style preferences.
Sticking true to being a "custom" builder, we will of course design any style home our customers desire within the confines of the regulatory environment and their budget. However, our specialty tends to lean toward the Florida traditional style home that can be labeled in many forms with changes in cosmetic and/or architectural details...
Over the next few months we will be describing the features and influences that create specific styles that are popular here in SW Florida such as:
Olde Florida Style
Craftsman/Arts & Crafts Style
Beach Cottage
Mediterranean/Spanish Style
Cracker/Shotgun Homes
Walking through the historic section of downtown Punta Gorda, you can get a good idea of the variety of homes that fit these traditional historic styles. Sometimes the variables are slight while in other instances the differences are large. I hope you'll enjoy learning about these differences as much as I enjoy researching and building these unique homes!
Sincerely,
TJ Thornberry

Homeowner Tip
Which Kitchen Countertop is in YOUR Future?
The variety of countertop materials that is available for residential use can be daunting when it comes to selecting one for your home.
While the traditional mica top is still available it is used less and less as pricing for other more durable selections are coming down. Having said that, the choices in mica colors and patterns are mimicking the natural stones. So if that is your choice...go for it...but make sure you upgrade to a beveled edge for a better look!
Here's a breakdown of some popular choices that are used locally:
Quartz: The new "stone". This is a man-made product created by mixing natural ground stone quartz with color pigments, resins and polymer to form the slab. According to Consumer Reports® quartz withstood almost everything in their recent tests of countertop surfaces. Repairs must be done by a professional. Pricing is similar to granite.
Granite: A natural stone product mined from quarries all over the world. The variety of colors depend on the location of the quarry. Granite does need sealing (either by homeowner or professional) usually every 5 years or so, depending on use. Like Quartz repairs must be done by a professional.
Solid Surface: (Dupont Corian, etc) An acrylic non-porous synthetic surface that is available in an array of colors from a variety of companies. One of the best features is that the installation offers an almost seamless look between counter slabs and back splashes. It will scratch when cutting on it and a hot pot will melt it. Cutting boards and trivets are a must! Pricing depends on the quality, color and design. Some small scratches can be buffed out by the homeowner, larger problems will need a professional.
Recycled Glass: New to the market, recycled glass tops (glass pieces imbedded in a cement or epoxy resin - depending on company) looks like terrazzo floors. Depending on the size of the glass pieces, this can be a very contemporary look (large pieces) or traditional (small granulated particles). Cost is probably higher than Quartz or Granite, but for some the "look" would be worth it.
Other countertop choices would include (but not limited to) butcher block, stainless steel, soapstone, limestone, marble, solid glass slabs, concrete and many others. Really, the variety is almost endless.
When deciding which is best for your family, think about how your kitchen is used and who uses it. Is everyone careful? Do you need something very durable or can you combine different products (eg...a plate glass high bar on stainless steel brackets mounted over a granite standard height top)? Online "window shopping" resources will give you a good overview of what's available, pricing and qualities to look for depending on your home life. This will give you a bit of education before you step into the realm of shopping with local companies.
Happy Hunting!

Condo Renovating for Accessibility
Our client is wheelchair bound and has mobility problems within her current space. The kitchen is small and the appliances are hard for her to handle.
 |
Existing Kitchen
|
The hallway into her bedroom and guest room doesn't allow for turning space for the wheelchair. The flooring is out of date and damaged in some areas.
In her 80's and an avid HGTV fan, she had a well thought out list of her needs and desires. Many we were able to incorporate into the new plan, but because of the constraints of size and condo construction, some had to be left by the wayside.

|
The dropped ceiling in the kitchen was removed, the doors to the two bedrooms were removed, the entry to the master bedroom was placed on an angle using space from moving the guest bedroom door inward.

New tile floors, paint & angled bedroom door frame redesigned.
|
Finished with the demolition, new openings have been framed and drywall installed. We're in the process of laying the new tile floors.
All changes were calculated for as much accessibility allowable within the confines of the condo space, our client's specific needs and budget.
Custom kitchen cabinets are on order as well as specialty appliances.
