Greetings!
Spring has finally sprung! Flowers are starting to bloom en masse and trees are bursting with buds ready to pop open. But nature is not the only thing popping up in SW Florida. Construction in our area has residential and commercial buildings "coming out of the ground" all over Charlotte County. We here at Thornberry Custom Builders are happy to be part of the resurgence.
Everyone's been asking about the Craftsman style home that we've featured in previous newsletters. Our agreement with the homeowner was...we would build it, but he would do all the cabinetry. An avid craftsman himself, he's been busy working on the finishing touches and when complete, we'll post the interior photos on Facebook and in a future newsletter.
In the meantime, we've started work on a commercial remodel Firehouse Subs (see story below) and a new single family residence (story in next month's newsletter).
Hope you're enjoying the weather!
Sincerely,
TJ Thornberry

Industry News,
Construction Blooming in Charlotte County
Coming to Port Charlotte
Have you ever had a Firehouse Sub?
I think they're awesome! They use the best ingredients and unlike other sub places, they steam their meats and cheeses, releasing fantastic flavors. Then they stuff a serving that's way over code on one of their toasted private recipe sub rolls. Yum!
Another reason I'm so excited about Firehouse Subs is...Thornberry Custom Builders has been selected as the Contractor to remodel the existing space to meet Firehouse Subs standards.
They're located in the Heritage Plaza on Veterans Boulevard in Port Charlotte. That's the shopping plaza that is home to Pier One, Michael's, Best Buy, Marshall's and Bed, Bath & Beyond.
As many of you know, I'm very involved with a variety of local organizations. I really believe in the value of networking and being involved in the community. Well, true to form, networking works! A Charlotte County Chamber member who knows the Firehouse Subs franchisee, recommended that they get in touch with me for their remodel...and the rest is history!
The photos on the right show the progress we've made. They're scheduled to open in late May or early June. I hope you'll stop in to enjoy the food and take a look at the space we've created.

Monthly Home Owner Tip
Drain that Water Heater!
Many of us never think about the water heater until it stops working! Our hard water in Florida is "hard" on our water heaters and plumbing fixtures. Sediment build-up from calcium carbonate in our water is naturally separated from the heat and can build-up over time forming a sand like condition in the bottom of the tanks.
The sediment build-up can slow the heat transfer and in many cases burn out the lower element and/or greatly reduce the energy efficiency of the water heater. Furthermore, the sediment often drifts into the plumbing lines getting lodged in valves and faucet filters causing additional build-up and damage.
It is recommended that you drain your water heater annually to make it more efficient and extend the life of your water heater.
Here are 5 easy steps to safely drain your water heater: 1. Shut off the circuit breaker to the heater. If gas, turn off the pilot light. Turn off the cold feed. 2. Turn on and run the hot water side of a fixture inside your home until it is lukewarm and leave open. 3. Attach a garden hose to the valve at the bottom of your heater and run the hose outside or to a lower nearby drain. 4. Open the drain valve on the heater. Once the water stops draining turn on the cold feed to the heater to flush out the remaining sediment. When the water is clear, you have successfully flushed your tank. 5. Turn the valve off at the bottom of your tank and turn off the hot water faucet inside your home. After the tank is completely full of water, turn the circuit breaker back on to heat the water back to normal temperature. Note, be sure the tank is full before turning the power and heating element back on. Failure to do so can result in burning out the element requiring expensive repairs.
