Industry News,
Thoughts for Home Owners
From TJ

The Harvey Street "Craftsman style" home we have been featuring has begun taking on a character of its own. As you can see, it's really starting to look like the original elevation drawing. (photos at right)

We've installed wood "shake" style siding on the gable ends along with the traditional looking "lap" siding on the remaining exterior. Although labor intensive, the traditional look of the wood shake and lap siding is second to none.

The siding is Smart Siding by Louisiana-Pacific Corporation. It's an all wood strand product that is treated with a zinc borate compound to protect against fungal decay and termites. It carries a 50 year product warranty - far superior to the cement compound product alternatives.

In addition, the homeowners opted to have open "truss tails" under the porch roof eaves to give it the true "old Florida" charm.

The finished roof covering is the 26 gauge Acrylic Galvalume 5V Crimp roof system which is the most common and economical metal roof available. The advantages to this roofing system are its longevity, wind resistance, heat reflection, and of course its look. If the standard galvanized finish turns you off, it is available in a multitude of colors.

Monthly Home Owner Tip:

Do You Know What a
Weep Hole is?

Take a look at your windows. There should be two or more small holes at the bottom of your windows that allow water to drain from your window sills called "weep holes." These holes provide a very important function to prevent water build-up and potential leaking on or around your window sills.

Here in SW Florida, most of the exterior finish on our homes is Stucco. If not applied around the windows properly, some stucco installers have been known to fill-in or stucco over the weep holes preventing the window sill to drain properly.

Over time, water will find its way into the wall and cause mold, wood-rot, and many other potentially damaging problems. Blockage can also be caused by paint, dirt and debris

An easy fix for this problem is to take a small knife or sharp tool and clear the holes. Simple, preventive maintenance!

What's new with the Thornberry's.......

We recently took a trip to North Carolina for the early Fall colors. We stayed in a little dot on the map called Roaring Gap just south of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

NC Roaring Gap

The first half of the trip was spent hiking and sight TJ Hikeseeing around Stone Mountain State Park. During the second half, we were joined by dear friends  and spent the rest of the time visiting the many vineyards and wineries in the area. TJ and Jessica

We could get used to mountain living!
