Here are a few things that are going on in BHSHRM:

  • Thursday September 10th, was the first meeting of our SHRM CP/SCP Certification Training Class! We are very excited to have six students who are participating. The Board is very grateful for our Certification Co-Directors, David Scarborough and Mary Pembroke, who have volunteered to teach the class. This class will run from now until December and we are confident that it will be a success. Thanks Mary and David, and good luck to all of our participants!
  • I would like to thank everyone who attended our August Foundation picnic. We did a potluck style lunch and had a lot of great conversation. Thanks to the Board members who provided the sides, salads, drinks and desserts. And a special thanks to Vicki James, our Foundation Director, who facilitated our class in Employing Older workers. With all of your help we were able to contribute over $400 to the SHRM Foundation!
  • This month's meeting will be September 29th at 7:30am and will feature Nancy Conway, our SHRM Field Services Director, who will be in Rapid City to speak on moving HR in a competency based direction. We are really excited have Nancy here in the Black Hills and hope that you can join us for this breakfast event.

Thanks for being a part of BHSHRM and I hope to see you the September 29th for our membership meeting!

Nick Stroot
President of Black Hills SHRM

Federal Contractors and Mandatory Sick Le
a
ve

President Obama signed an Executive Order which will require federal contractors and subcontractors to provide their workers up to seven or more days of paid sick leave per year. Employers have some time to come into compliance, as the rule only applies to contracts that are solicited or awarded starting on January 1, 2017.  To read more click here.

Sam-Sex Marriage Legalization
The historic June 2015 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges requiring all jurisdictions in all fifty states to license a marriage between two people of the same sex and to recognize marriage between two people of the same-sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out of state, creates some key legal considerations relating to employer sponsored benefit plans.  To read more click here.
