April 2015 Newsletter

Greetings!

I want to sincerely thank all of you for your membership to BHSHRM and for advancing the profession of Human Resources. Here are a few things that are going on and that the Board is working on:

  • Just a reminder that the State SHRM conference is coming up this month in Yankton, SD. The conference starts April 29th and finishes on May 1st. This is a great time for learning, networking, and celebrating HR! You can find more information at http://sesd.shrm.org/sesd-state-conference

  • We are working on ridesharing for this event. If you are looking for a ride to Yankton, or have extra space and would appreciate some company please email me @ [email protected] and I will set you up with someone looking for sharing as well.

  • Congratulations to Bev Morris of Coca-Cola High County for being named the 2014 BHSHRM Professional of the Year. We were excited to present this at our March membership meeting and were happy to host a number of Bev's employees to help her share in the presentation.  See picture and full press release later in the newsletter.

  • Thanks to all the members who attended and participated in the March Roundtable discussion hosted by Sandy Burns of Project Solutions Inc. We received extremely positive reviews for the format and many members gave feedback saying they learned new ways of handling HR hot topics. The networking I witnessed was an exciting part of the change in format. I feel it is something we should bring back at a future meeting.

  •  As usual we are hosting Joe Dreesen from Jackson Lewis for our April meeting. It will be a breakfast meeting starting at 7:30am on April 16th at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn. This program is titled "Dangerous Conditions Ahead...How to prepare for Human Resources Emergencies" and has been pre-approved for 1.5 HRCI credits.

  • One of the changes we have made is to the website (a big thanks to Amanda Dokter for her help!) is updating and adding to our Affiliated News. One of my goals is to become a community partner in the Black Hills and have BHSHRM seen as a leader in the engagement of leaders in HR and other business practices. If you have an event you would like to share with the members please have a completed announcement sent to [email protected] and we will get it put on our website.

Thanks for being a part of BHSHRM and I hope to see you at the April membership meeting!

Nick Stroot
President of Black Hills SHRM

CERTIFICATION PREP COURSE AND MATERIALS

Looking to take your skills and career to the next level?   Pursue HR certification courses through BHSHRM!

Human Resources is one of those professions that requires a commitment to constant learning and professional development.  As a means of supporting our members' continuing education goals, Black Hills SHRM is offering a prep course and associated study guides to help you gain your Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) certification.   Many members have used this course as a way of expanding their skills!

Interested individuals may use these resources to achieve the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or the SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP).

You may be asking, "What are the benefits of pursuing certification with BHSHRM?"  (Excellent question!)

  • Individuals who participate in our prep classes have a much higher pass-rate than the national average
  • Provides you with a fully accredited professional credential
  • Grows your knowledge across the major HR practices - including employee/labor relations, legal knowledge, training, and payroll
  • Validates your expertise and commitment to the HR field
  • Offers an excellent opportunity to network and share information with other Black Hills human resources professionals
  • Qualifies you for many new positions which may require/prefer certified candidates
  • Bonus:  Research by Payscale.com shows certified professionals with a higher median salary of over $18,000 when compared to non-credentialed counterparts

Think you might be interested?  The classes begin in September and we have study materials available for you at a vastly discounted rate!  Normal price for the system for a national SHRM member is $695 ($870 for non-member), but we can get it for you at the low price of $472.

Review the SHRM website to ensure your education and years of experience qualify you to sit for that exam.  If you would like more information, to purchase a set of study guides, or just want to chat about how much your existing HR certification has enhanced your career/life/golf-game, feel free to contact us at [email protected]!

IMPORTANT MEETING INFORMATION

Registration

Membership meetings are held on a monthly basis.  The cost to attend will be based on the rate for BHSHRM Members and Non-Members published on the event page.  In order to receive the Member rate, an annual membership application and payment for the membership dues must be received and approved by the Board of Directors prior to the meeting.  Any attendee that has not done the following will be considered a Non-Member and charged the applicable rate.

The deadline to register and attend the monthly meeting is 2 calendar days prior to the event date (i.e. For a Tuesday meeting, registration must be received no later than Sunday at 11:59 pm).  At each meeting, we provide lunch/breakfast free of charge to attendees.  However, due to the deadline for the food vendor we use, all meal preferences must be received no later than 5 business days prior to the event (i.e. For a Tuesday meeting, meal preferences must be received a week prior on Tuesday no later than 11:59 pm).  Any registrations received after this deadline cannot be guaranteed meal options.

 Cancellations

Individuals that register for a monthly BHSHRM meeting are able to cancel without penalty if notification is sent to [email protected] 5 business days prior to the event (i.e. For a Tuesday meeting, cancellations must be received a week prior on Tuesday no later than 11:59 pm).  After this deadline, participants will be charged the applicable member or non-member rate for the meeting.  However, substitutions can be sent in the registered individual's place as long as 1) An email notification of the change has been sent to [email protected], and 2) the substitute pays the non-member rate if applicable.  No changes to meal preferences can be accommodated if after the deadline and BHSHRM will not be responsible for finding substitutes.
