Derby 2014 at Our Airports

The week of the Kentucky Derby is the busiest time of year at Louisville International Airport (SDF) and Bowman Field (LOU) as guests from around the world are welcomed to our city.

Louisville International

To welcome Derby guests, the terminal was decorated with more than 1,200 freshly cut roses. Also, musicians played while 23 greeters distributed 13,000 Ruth Hunt Woodford Reserve® bourbon balls to arriving passengers on Thursday and Friday of Derby week.

On departure Sunday, May 4, complimentary Bubble Wrap® stations were staffed by volunteer Airport Ambassadors to securely wrap bottles of Kentucky bourbon so that departing guests could pack their liquid souvenirs in checked luggage.

In addition, 559 privately owned aircraft visited Louisville from Wednesday through Sunday of Derby week - 272 were on the ground at race time.

Bowman Field

As in previous years, Bowman Field was once again the start for the Kentucky Derby Festival's the U.S. Bank Great Balloon Race on Saturday, April 26, with more than 30 balloons participating.

In addition, the FAA control tower reported an increase in air traffic with more than 1,100 aircraft operations from Friday, May 2 to Sunday, May 4. A total of 122 aircraft were on the ground at race time.

Additional Flights at Louisville International

Three airlines are enhancing service at the Louisville International Airport (SDF) with additional flights. Beginning in June, Delta Air Lines will add a fourth daily flight from Louisville to the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP). Also, United Airlines will add a third daily flight to the Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and a sixth daily flight to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD).

Southwest will add two (for a total of three) Saturday-only flights from June 14 through August 9 from Louisville to the Tampa International Airport (TPA) and Orlando International Airport (MCO).

Summer Travel Tips

During the busy summer travel season, here are a few tips to help make planning your getaway a little easier.

Getting the Right Flight

Visit the Louisville International Airport (SDF) website at www.FlyLouisville.com to book your next flight. The airlines offer dozens of great vacation getaways - many with nonstop service. Remember, if you can be flexible on your travel plans, you can save money.

Pack Light

The less you pack the more money you may save as most airlines charge a fee for checked bags. Focus on the essentials when packing and consider purchasing items when you arrive.

Arrive Early

With an increase in travelers expected during the summer months, be sure to arrive 1˝ hours prior to your scheduled departure-particularly during peak departure times. At Louisville International Airport, those peak periods are daily from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. For travelers' convenience, the TSA security checkpoint at Louisville International is open daily from 4:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. For additional TSA information, visit www.tsa.gov.
