Summer Travel Tips

During the busy summer travel season, here are a few tips to help make planning your getaway a little easier.

Getting the Right Flight

Visit the Louisville International Airport (SDF) website at www.FlyLouisville.com to book your next flight to dozens of great vacation getaways - many with new nonstop service. Remember, if you can be flexible on your travel plans, you can save money.

Pack Light

The less you pack, the more money you may save as most airlines charge a fee for checked bags. Focus on the essentials when packing and consider purchasing items when you arrive.

Arrive Early

With an increase in travelers expected during the summer months, be sure to arrive 1 hours prior to your scheduled departure particularly during peak departure times. At Louisville International Airport, those peak periods are daily from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. For travelers' convenience, the TSA security checkpoint at Louisville International is open daily from 4:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. For additional TSA information, visit  www.tsa.gov.

Derby 2013 at the Airports

The 2013 Kentucky Derby was a busy time at Louisville International Airport (SDF) and Bowman Field (LOU) as guests from around the world were welcomed to our city.

Louisville International

On Thursday, May 2 through Monday, May 6, there were 39,523 departure seats, an increase of 10% compared to last year. These numbers increased due to new service to New York and Atlanta and because Delta and US Airways operated mainline flights on Monday, May 6.

In addition, 545 corporate and other privately owned aircraft visited Louisville International from Wednesday through Sunday of Derby week-270 were on the ground at race time.

Bowman Field

For the second year, Bowman Field (LOU) hosted the Kentucky Derby Festival Great Balloon Rush Hour Race the weekend before Derby. Also, the FAA tower reported more than 1,000 aircraft operations from Thursday, May 1 to Sunday, May 5-with a total of 111 aircraft on the ground at race time.
