CONTINUED REFLECTION ON STEWARDSHIP
We proceed through stewardship season with continued
reflection upon 2 Corinthians 8:1-5.
Paul wanted the Corinthians to know about the true treasure of life--following Christ brings a perspective that looks outside oneself toward God and others with an attitude of generosity. Paul describes this perspective. He tells how God's grace overflows in life to bring new meaning to being blessed. The Corinthians learned by the example of the Macedonians that being truly blessed is not a financial assessment, it is a state of being. It is where our heart is when we are living for God that frees life into true blessing. In the movie Dead Man Walking, the man on death row was afraid of his impending death. A nun, Sister Helen Prejean, told him to look at her when he was dying because she said, "I want the last face you see in the world to be the face of love, so look at me when they do this thing. I'll be the face of love for you." In our daily interactions, God is calling each of us to be the face of love to others. Generous hearts of sacrificial giving allows God's love to fill our lives and overflow into the lives of others. That makes a big difference in the world. Can you imagine the world's attitude "What do I lack?" being replaced with "How can I give?" That is a world modeled after Jesus Christ. Let us follow Paul's plea to the Corinthians and be the face of Christ to the world. Live the generous life! Andrew

STEWARDSHIP UNITY AND CONGREGATIONAL FORUM
Committees and staff are preparing their budgets. Members are prayerfully considering their pledges for next year's ministry. I love stewardship season because it creates such unity among the members. Members are brought together in mission, worship, music, fellowship, and Sunday School. We are joined in prayer, visitation, and educational ministries. Stewardship's unity brings everyone together across a wide spectrum of participation. Don't you love to watch those stewardship testimonies at the beginning of worship? We realize how unified we are in our love to serve God through First and Calvary. We want the congregational meeting, held on October 29 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary, to fortify and preserve this unity. The purpose of the meeting is for the Session to hear congregational response to recent denominational activity. A debate moderated by Presbytery representatives on the issues might have proven to be divisive. Instead, the meeting's format will be congregational feedback. Clerk of Session Bob Bennett and I will ask the questions, "How will we as a congregation keep ourselves together?" "What kind of response should we have?" "How can our future conversations keep the church's momentum moving forward and focused upon our mission as the body of Christ?" Instead of making ballots to vote about an issue, this meeting will be a time of discussion and listening that will emphasize our desire to grow as a church in Christ Jesus. All In, All Ages unified in Christ, Andrew

If you would like to help, please consider participating in the Mitten Tree Project by bringing gently used or new hats, scarves, gloves, or mittens and placing them on the mitten trees in the N. Jarrett's Hygiene Closet is almost full! All we lack is laundry detergent "Pods" and boys/mens shampoo and/or body wash. The backpack distribution has gotten off to a great start! Volunteers are still needed to help with the pack distribution on Fridays. You may still bring items you wish to donate because the need will continue all year. Contact Terri Raaphorst for more information at [email protected].

New College Sunday School Class!
College Students! On Sunday, October 26, F&C will have a new College Sunday School class in the Chapel. Taught by Kevin Pybas and Cathy VanLanduyt, the class, Redemption, will look at how the Bible speaks to real-life issues; what the ancient stories say about life struggles and big decisions that college students face; and will remind us that nothing can separate us from Christ's love and grace. Join us on October 26 in the chapel or contact Terri Blackmon, at 862-5068 or at [email protected] for more information.
