The Mission "Madness" Movement

If you have been at church recently, you are probably quite aware that First & Calvary just spent a good part of the season of Lent thinking, praying and talking to one another about Missions--asking the very basic question of "what is our Mission?"  To help get zeroed in on the answer to that question, we relied on the idea that we can oftentimes figure out what our Mission from God is by noticing what makes us mad.  As Christians, when we notice that we are impassioned about a cause or an injustice or a need, that holy emotion just might be an indicator that God is calling us to do something in particular with our faith.  So we have been asking one another, "what makes you mad?" and then collecting the responses and channeling them into Mission projects.  The results have been astounding!  68 people and counting have made a new commitment to serve on congregational Mission projects.  And this is on top of other ongoing Mission projects of various kinds by individuals and groups within the congregation.  Clearly, God is doing something exciting in our midst and we are tuning in!

That is why our "madness" for Missions continues well beyond March or April.  We anticipate that "Mission Madness" is becoming a movement, rather than just something we talk about for the few weeks leading up to Easter.  So...we're getting organized!  Your Missions Committee has already been working overtime to help organize these Mission efforts, and wants to let everyone know several important things:

1. Thanks to our congregation members for your strong response and support!

2. The next step is in the works:  the Missions Committee is organizing an orientation for members who have signed up for projects.  The date and time are in the works and will be announced soon.  Please watch the Review and other announcements for details.

3. We are in the process of updating our website (www.firstandcalvary.org) to include essential information about our new Mission projects.  It will be located under the Ministries tab.

God is doing a new thing among us.  Won't you join in?  Please contact Claudia Hartner at [email protected]  or Nancy Evans at [email protected] to let them know you are interested.

YOU CAN STILL GIVE TO
ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING
Feeding the hungry, helping people build up their own livelihoods, responding to disasters-these are all ways that your gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing are changing lives, changing communities, and changing the world.

While we trust the One Great Hour of Sharing programs to respond to the needs of our poorest and hungriest neighbors, they can only do so to the extent of our generosity. When we give this year, we give in faith - knowing that One Great Hour of Sharing we will be responding in Christ's name to the cries of our sisters and brothers throughout the world.  To find out more information on how your support of One Great Hour of Sharing helps people all over the world, visit their website (www.presbyterianmission.org/oghs).

Preaching Approach Reformed

Easter Sunday marked an end to the preaching model that featured a preacher of the day--one pastor traveling between two services.  Since the later traditional and contemporary services happen simultaneously, many times the preacher of the day preached in both.  This added hours to the non-preaching pastor's work week since time that would have been spent writing sermons could now be dedicated to pastoral care.   Though many churches use this model, because they are short of pastoral resources, our congregation has not been as comfortable with it.  So although a pastor may still preach in all services, it will be uncommon.  Using a Lectionary text has captured the interest of several adult classes.  People have enjoyed going deeper into the text as they prepare for Sunday's sermon.  We will keep the Lectionary focus of our preaching approach, but will return to the former model of one pastor  in each service.
