Confirmation Class 2013
Confirmation Sunday is April 28
11:00 a.m. Traditional Service

Over the past eight weeks, our Confirmands explored many faith-building topics as they studied the Gospel of Mark. They learned much about the character of God as they have pursued their faith.

Along the way, Craig Young, Jason and Mary Streubel and I have had the privilege of working with these students to help guide them through their Confirmation journey.

We are proud to present the 2013 Confirmands:

Kaitlyn Baird, Katy Chambers, Brian Correll, Zachary Cosby, Sarah Cummings, Katherine English, Jack Gold, Katie Groves, Nathan Howard, Parker Mee, Caroline Trinca.

We hope you will join us as we honor the Confirmation Class in worship on Sunday, April 28 in the 11:00 a.m. Traditional Service. We also want to invite Confirmation students, parents, grandparents, friends and family to a Confirmation Reception with cake and punch in the Student Lounge from 9:30-9:45 a.m. Please stop and congratulate our 2013 Confirmation students.

In Christ,

Rob Howard

THINK PARTNERSHIPS...

We have been talking about reaching the people in our community who are not affiliated with another church.  This is the largest growing group in surveys about religious standing in America.  When asked what church they are affiliated with, they mark "none." So they are called the "nones".

"Nones" are not atheist or unbelievers, they went to church at one time or another, but they have not been to a church lately.  The reason why-no one asked them.  No one invited them to church.  Yes, it can be a little awkward to begin a conversation when you have an agenda of inviting someone to church.  It's simply not our style.  These days no one wants to be pushy-we can all understand how that turns people off.  If we look as if we are a church that is trying to convert everyone to membership, then we are only out for one thing-membership numbers.

That's not what we are all about.  We are about unleashing the Holy Spirit. We are not about information-convincing someone to agree to our doctrines.  We are about transformation-seeing lives changed in Christ.   So how do we reach out and connect?  One way is to re-frame the invitation.  Instead of seeing it as going to church, think about it as being a "partner in ministry."

Invite a neighbor Once we see the opportunity coming, usually we are thinking, "Ok, I am about to invite my neighbor across the street to come to church.  Come on courage!"  Instead of that, ask yourself what you enjoy about church, then use that to issue the invitation. Or see what your neighbor enjoys, and consider how that could be used to bring God the glory.

Recently a student group, Habitat for Humanity, partnered in a beautification project by planting some flowers by one of our signs.  Ann Hall got a good picture!  Now those students are likely to return to worship.  They feel a connection with us.  Maybe you and your neighbor could join together in something that might lead to an easier, less blunt invitation to worship.  Don't worry so much about what words to say.  Let the Holy Spirit work through you.  Let's connect with those "nones."

In Christ,

Andrew

SUGGESTIONS FOR CHURCH OFFICERS

According to the Book of Order, the ministry of deacon is one of compassion and service. The ministry of ruling elders is one of discernment and governance. These are distinct and equally important called ministries in our church. The Nominating Committee is beginning their work of seeking members of the congregation to serve in leadership positions in 2014 through 2016. Is there someone you would like to recommend? Or, do you feel called to serve? The committee welcomes your prayerful suggestions.

Please suggest names and feel free to provide supportive information for any or all of the following opportunities to serve:

  • Elder
  • Deacon
  • 2014 Church-wide Nominating Committee
  • Congregation position on the Personnel Committee

You many place your suggestions in the offering plate, or give them to the committee chair, Tracy Lipscomb, by placing them in the "L" box located in the South Atrium, or email her. Please respond by May 26, so the committee can fully utilize your ideas as they prayerfully begin this important process of discerning members called to lead our church in the coming years.
