You Want "Comfort" While You Work Out???

I know, you hate to sweat. Please turn the air on and the fans. I need to be cool and comfortable while I work out. Well guess what? You are slowing your calorie burn with all that cool air while you exercise. That sweat you don't like could be helping you burn up to 10-30% more calories during your workout.

There are many different factors that can affect your metabolism (the amount of calories used or burned). Your core body temperature can increase or decrease your metabolism or calories burned. There was research published in Transactions of the American Clinical and Climatological Association, 2009, that reports that an increase in body temperature is associated with a higher metabolism. And higher body temperature means a sped up metabolism. They suggest that for each degree Celsius temperature rises, your metabolism rises by 10 to 13 percent. That means you would burn an extra 100 to 130 calories per day if you were eating 200 calories daily. Your body temperature accounts for 50 percent of your energy expenditure.

Women from Venus and Men from Mars
Or the Difference between us and our hormones

Some of my female clients have voiced an opinion on the unfairness of their male partner's ability to lose fat faster than they. Weight loss isn't really easy for any-male or female. There are some scientific facts however that prove men have an easier time losing weight then women. Why, you may ask? Evidence suggest several possibilities: biology, hormones, muscle mass; metabolism and other. I'm going to explore ways in which women are diff from men when it comes to losing weight. Understand these differences may help you if you are struggling with weight loss.

Hormones. The primary male hormone is testosterone. It is responsible for more than just sex drive. A healthy male with normal to high testosterone levels has a much easier time building lean muscle tissue, whereas women who produce testosterone in far smaller amounts, have a much harder time building and maintaining a healthy amount of lean muscle mass. The female hormone estrogen is largely responsible for making women's bodies ready for pregnancy, meaning, easy weight gain, lower metabolism and less energy spent building lean muscle tissue. So hormones have a lot to do with results in the gym when comparing men with women.

Where are the MEMORIES?
Without them, WHO ARE WE?

During the last few years, I have worked with clients whose close relationship with an Alzheimer's patient affected their every day. With some, it was a parent, others, a spouse or sibling, but in every case, the symptoms and diagnosis is life-changing!

My purpose with this article is to bring more light to your thinking about the disease and the causes/effects on both the patient and their family or friends. From my observation, it is much more than just "forgetfulness." The disease brings mental and emotional frustration for everyone involved, with escaping memories causing a roller-coaster ride of highs and lows!

There have been enough news-worthy celebrities with early onset of the disease to dispel the myth that Alzheimer's is only for the old! Although there is no "quick" test to diagnose Alzheimer's, there are tests to rule out other possibilities such as stroke or tumor. One of the first signs is usually loss of short-term memories: what has recently happened, or even words to finish a thought. There are times when a friend or relative CANNOT remember what they just ate, or the important thing they were going to share with you, or even how to get back to the house when they walked down the block! Don't ignore the signs, but also realize these symptoms can be caused by other highly treatable diseases.

Even if Alzheimer's is diagnosed, early treatment seems to be the best solution for some control of symptoms. Currently there are no medications that do more than slow the progress of the disease. As the disease progresses, the nerve cells and other tissues in the brain get smaller, and the clear spinal fluid found in the brain and spine increases, damaging memory, speech and understanding. A person can just "forget" to eat, or even how to swallow. This possible lack of enough nutrition, in addition to breathing difficulty, is part of the reason for Alzheimer's ranking as the 6th leading cause of death in the United States.

Attitude

Matt Nicley APS, CFT, SDI
What is attitude? Attitude is a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person's behavior.

When you wake up in the morning, what attitude do you wake up with? Do you lay there wishing you could just hit the snooze button? Do you sit there and think and dread all the stuff you have to do today? Do you sit up and tell yourself, "Self, this is going to be an awesome day and I am going to dominate in everything I do!"

If you wake up with the last scenario I bet you're the type of person that requires little motivation to get things done in life. You know that a positive attitude can overcome so much. I always tell my clients I can tell when their muscles give out vs. their minds. If you let doubt enter your thoughts, you're more likely to fail at what you are trying achieve.
So how do we change our attitude? First you need to change the way you approach the situation. For instance if you are getting ready to do squats, do not start thinking how much weight you have on or how many sets/reps you have left. Instead picture yourself completing each set with perfect form and at the maximum reps. When approaching the bench press do not think, "I hope I can get at least the minimum reps". Instead clear your mind, take a few deep breaths, find your zone, and bust out the maximum reps. If your body gives out before your mind so be it, but at least you know you truly gave it your all!

Approach your fitness conditioning and life with a negative attitude and not only will you be miserable but you will fail! Approach your fitness conditioning and life with a positive attitude and you will succeed, you will conquer, and you will win!
