Green Tip For The Week

Compost it!  Compost helps improve soil so it holds more water and plants grow better.  Allow grass clippings to stay on the lawn, instead of bagging them.  The cut grass will decompose and return to the soil naturally.  Food scraps and kitchen waste also make good compost, and you save money on fertilizers or other additives.

Rabbi Frishman's Seminar:  Polarization or Shalom?
Next Session:  Monday, August 29, 7:30 pm
Polarization or Shalom
Seminar with Rabbi Frishman based on Jonathan Haidt's book:
The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion
"I hate you, you hate me, can't we be a happy family?"
In this political year, let's discuss how to get along with people we disagree with strongly. Haidt's important work applies biology and psychology towards understanding the development of morality, and the shaping of groups and communities.
Please acquire Haidt's book as reading preparation must be done in advance of each session.
  • Monday, August 29, 7:30 pm:  Morality Binds and Blinds (Read Part III)
If you are planning to attend this seminar, RSVP to Lori at [email protected] or (201) 848-1800.

Do you have a child going away to school?
Barnert would love to stay connected! Just provide us with your student's name and address, and we will periodically send messages from Rabbi Frishman, Rabbi Steiner and Sara Losch, as well as care packages with holiday greetings and upbeat messages! Please E-mail your child's name, E-mail address, as well as his/her complete mailing address to Rikki Lowy at [email protected].
A few important details:

  • This list is created from scratch each year. There are so many changes with our college students from year to year, so even if your child was on the list last year and nothing has changed, please send in their information!
  • If your child is studying away for a semester, please be sure to tell us which semester he/she will be away. Also, please indicate what year of study your student is in.
Please get us your child's contact information ASAP so he/she doesn't miss out on any of the holiday greetings and/or packages!!!

Lend Your Voice To The Adult Choir On The High Holidays!
choir
We're looking for more voices to enhance Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services.  It's fun; the music is easy to learn; you'll be fully engaged in our High Holiday services, and you'll join a very special group at Barnert Temple! We are planning a special introductory rehearsal for new singers so if you have not sung with our Choir before, you still can! Contact Janet at [email protected] and she will provide you with rehearsal information.
Come Make Some Noise on the High Holidays!
Shofar 2 Calling All Shofar Blowers!
Have you blown shofar during the High Holidays in past years at Barnert?  Would you like to try blowing shofar this year for the first time?  If you answered "yes" to either question, we'd love for you to join our team of shofar blowers.  We will offer a session to teach you how to blow the shofar and learn about its importance.  E-mail Rabbi Steiner at [email protected] to let her know you are interested and she will be in touch when the dates for the sessions are set!
Do you have a BT vehicle identification sticker?
car with mom and child
The High Holidays are right around the corner.
Barnert Temple has a security program which includes the issuing of numbered vehicle identification stickers to ALL Full and Associate Members of Barnert Temple.  These vehicle identification stickers assist security guards in more easily identifying unfamiliar vehicles. Thanks for your help in making Barnert a safe, secure and comfortable environment.

If you do not have a BT sticker currently on your vehicle, please call Natalie in the Temple Office at (201) 848-1800 and arrange to pick up your sticker.
