Donate Your Empty Medicine Bottles To Malawi, Africa
Collection Ends January 13, 2016
The Malawi Project Logo Your empty medicine bottles can help people in the third world country of Malawi keep their medicines clean, safe, and out of reach of small children.
Although we toss away our perfectly good medicine bottles, people in Malawi often walk miles to get their medicine, only to carry it back home wrapped in small torn pieces of paper that offer no protection from loss, dirt, or the mouths of young children.
You can easily help!  Please save your empty medicine bottles.  Simply place them in boiling water to remove the label and glue.  Then drop them in the large "medicine bottle" in the Temple Lobby.  Then know that you have made a big difference for someone in Malawi!
Click here to learn more about The Malawi Project.  Their site says that the program has ended.  That is only for individual collections.  We are a group collection and are still collecting.  Any questions, please contact Susan Wild at swild322@aol.com

Help Make Mitzvah Mall 2016 the Best One Yet!

In 2015, the Barnert community raised more than $36,000, double chai, for 10 grassroots organizations representing 10 carefully chosen mitzvot.  In 2016, our goal is to make even more of a difference by increasing our contribution to $40,000 or more.  We've already raised more than $1,742, with several corporate pledges pending!  Here's how you can help:
  • Donate now Click here to print out a donation form and send a check to the Barnert Temple Office.
  • Submit a raffle prize!  In 2015 the Mitzvah Mall raffle raised more than $6,000 for our charities. Help us increase that contribution to $10,000 or more by helping Raffle Coordinator Eileen Roman collect valuable goods, business services, restaurant certificates, vacation vouchers and more. Contact Eileen at jdroman@verizon.net.
  • Collect Tzedakah:  Keep a can at home.  Send Religious School students in with weekly Tzedakah dollars.  Pass a collection around at your next Temple meeting or event, label the envelope "For Mitzvah Mall 2016" and submit to Lynn Sabat in the Temple Office.
  • Participate in Mitzvah Mall 2016, Sunday, January 31, 9 am - Noon!  Click here to view a list of charities and their Barnert Temple chairpersons. Start researching now and reach out to Barnert chairs if you'd like to help in any way.
Mitzvah Mall and the Men's Club Pancake Breakfast are for everyone!  Go with your kids, go with friends, go on your own...it is a growth experience at any age.  Breakfast begins at 8:30 am and Mitzvah Mall begins at 9 am.

For more information, contact Co-Chairs Sue Klein at sueklein0319@gmail.com, Ron Lynn at ronlynnhome@icloud.com or Eileen Roman at jdroman@verizon.net.

The Syrian Refugee Crisis - You Can Make A Difference.

Syrian Refugees
Three things we can do:
1. Go to the HIAS (formerly called the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) website (HIAS.org - look for the "Global Refugee Crisis - How You Can Help"):
 - Sign the online petition to President Obama:  "Commit to resettling in the United States 100,000 of the most vulnerable Syrian refugees, allowing more individuals and families to start new lives in safety and freedom."
- Call your Senator, House of Representative Members using the HIAS script requesting support for the increase in refugee funding and legislation to improve the lives of refugees.

2. Contact Rabbi Frishman, Jeff Wild or Elizabeth Resnick and let them know you want to be part of the Barnert Community response to help refugees!

3.  Make a Donation:
  • HIAS - the only Jewish organization whose mission is to assist refugees - whomever they are and wherever they are, through action and advocacy.  HIAS.org
  • IsraAID - is a humanitarian aid agency helping people all over the world and providing millions with vital support for over a decade.  http://www.israaid.co.il/
  • Jewish Coalition for Disaster Relief (JCDR) - brings together the experience, expertise, and resources of North American Jewish organizations that seek to assist victims of natural or man-made disasters outside of North America on a non-sectarian basis.  http://www.jdc.org/jcdr/
2016 Calendars Wanted
Calendar
2016 calendars for the inmates at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility are needed.
At this time of year, we all get tons of calendars for the next year (2016) that we end up throwing away as useless.  Like last year, Barbara Sacks will this year again collect those unwanted calendars.  Those calendars that we usually throw away are vitally important to those who are incarcerated.  Time has a different meaning for the women who are serving prison sentences.  The calendars help them count off the time, while also bringing a part of the outside world into their limited existences and they can make notations on the calendars to help them move forward in a productive manner.
Please drop off the unwanted 2016 calendars in the Temple Atrium.  Barbara will pick them up and bring them to people for whom they would be important.
If you have any questions about this, please call Barbara at (201) 493-9975.

We are Always Collecting Food:

Check out the On-Line Option for Donating Food!
Local food pantries are struggling to meet demand.  We're always collecting food in the Atrium, but now you may also donate food through the click of a button.  Click here for our Barnert Temple Food Drive webpage at yougivegoods.com.  It's simple!  Select the food you would like to donate and pay on-line.  All purchases will be delivered to the Center for Food Action in Mahwah.

Winter Coats and Jackets :
We are still collecting for children and adults.  Please donate new or gently used coats and jackets today!  They will be donated to the Paterson community through CUMAC (Center of United Methodist Aid), a 2009 Mitzvah Mall Charity.

Toiletries New Toiletries, Cosmetic Bags, Toiletry Bags:
Center for Hope and Safety (formerly Shelter Our Sisters, a 2002 Mitzvah Mall Charity) still need items.  Full sizes or the small bottles of shampoo, conditioner, lotion and bars of soap from hotels are great!  New cosmetic bags and toiletry bags are needed as well!

Please drop off your contributions in the baskets in the Atrium.
