Dear JABBERS:
Each November, the U.S. government, along with other health and human service providers bring awareness to an issue near and dear to my heart - adoption - by recognizing this month as National Adoption Month. At just five months old, I was adopted into a loving Midwestern home from my birthplace of Seoul, South Korea. While I had a great childhood, I had questions that I imagine most adoptees have about their origins. Two years ago, I had the chance to have those questions answered when I was selected to join a group of more than 20 other Korean-born adoptees to participate in a homeland tour and birth family search. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to learn about and experience Korean culture, as well as visit the orphanage where I spent the first five months of my life. Although I did not find my birth family on this trip, I left with a deeper connection to my heritage and the answers to many questions that only the orphanage director or my birth family could have given me. My life has been a whirlwind ever since!
I received an email right around this time (two years ago), with the subject line that read "Your Sister in Korea"; my life changed forever.

Me with my birth mother and daughter, who is wearing a traditional Korean dress, for her baptism last month.
|
The email was from my eldest sister and revealed the circumstances of my adoption and soap-opera-like details about my birth family. Over the following 11 months, I met my birth mother in Houston, traveled back to Korea to meet my father and three older sisters, and started a family of my own, with the birth of my daughter.
This November, as you're planning your Thanksgiving meal and preparing your house for the holidays, I hope you'll join me in taking a moment to think about the thousands of children available for adoption throughout the country. Happy National Adoption Month and Happy JABBING!
