August 2016 Newsletter
A MESSAGE FROM YOUR BOARD

Dear RAC Members,

The proposed amendments to our Association's by-laws went out to professional members for a vote on 7/13.  Thank you very much to all of you who voted!  All proposed amendments carried by majority vote.

One of the main changes to our by-laws is that Associate members are now allowed to vote and serve on the Board.  In 2010 under President Keegan Wood the decision was made by the RAC Board to allow the same privileges to both membership levels.  This by-law amendment now formalizes that decision.

The wording describing a Professional and an Associate member was also slightly modified for purposes of clarification.

We also received several nominations for serving on the Board for this next term that has just started. The Ballot for voting will be emailed out shortly. If there are any Associate Members interested in serving on the Board, please nominate yourselves by sending an email of interest to info@reflexology-ca.org.

Last but not least, if your 2016-2017 membership dues are current, you will receive your Membership Guidebook by email in September.

Your support is truly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Ariana Thaxter

The Effect of Reflexology on Pain Intensity & Duration of Labor on Primiparas

The Reflexology Association of America's website has several links of interest on specific studies that have been conducted involving Reflexology.

This original article about The Effect of Reflexology on Pain Intensity & Duration of Labor on Primiparas was published by The Iranian Red Crescent Medical Journal.  It is a long article, so we summarize here the main findings:

Bering Liisberg in a study on the effect of reflex-
ology on the labor outcome found that out of 68
pregnant women who chose reflexology, 61 (89.71%)
expressed that reflexology was helpful in reducing the
pain, 6 (8.82%) did not feel any effect and one sub-
ject felt increased pain in response to reflexology.

This study demonstrated
that reflexology could
decrease the duration of first, second and third stages
of labor as well as alleviate intensity of labor pain.
Therefore, the use of reflexology in maternity care
appears to demonstrate high levels of maternal and
even staff satisfaction.
