Marketing Trends from the

CAMTC

Ahmos Netanel, is California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) CEO and Past President of American Massage Therapy Association-California Chapter (AMTA-CA).

Netanel gave a free two-hour presentation in March within the AMTA-CA 2015 Annual Conference held in San Jose on March 19th.

He provided interesting thoughts on marketing trends.  A recent news report he showed from a station in Sacramento reported that in spite of the economy, massage therapists are in demand.  Employers like Massage Envy cannot find enough practitioners to hire.

Educational costs are $10,000-$16,000 with 8-12 months of instruction.  Graduates
can earn $15-$25+ per hour when working for an establishment.  Of course, more if
they take the entrepreneurial route, but most want to work for someone else.  That
said, the question is can the demand for reflexology be far behind?

Netanel said acceptance has created a market for massage.  In 1980 when he started
in the field brochures had to convince people of the physiological benefits of
massage.  Today the benefits are understood and people are into wellness (or the
relaxation benefits.) Therefore practitioners now must promote themselves--how
they standout from the competition.

Netanel reminded the audience that in California even with the popular use of social media, your clients will most often come from within a 15-minute drive of your location and that's where you need to focus your marketing efforts.

What is CAMTC?

What is its scope of work?

Knowing that some RAC members are also massage therapists you may be interested in the answer to that question.

CAMTC is a private (non-governmental) non-profit public benefit corporation (501 c.3) authorized by the California state legislation in 2009 to provide voluntary certification that enables massage therapists to practice statewide.

The CAMTC's Mission as mandated is to protect the public by certifying qualified massage
professionals in California.

With what appears to be double-speak, one can understand how confusion exists.

What does certifying massage therapists to practice statewide but not licensing
them really mean?

The CAMTC has been given very specific and narrow guidelines within the law so
their scope is limited.  It must take a neutral stand in all matters but can explain
what the law is and must follow it to the letter.  It does not create licensure for
practitioners or regulate massage establishments.  Its duty is to protect the public
(and public means consumers and non-consumers as members of the community
which is 99.9% of the population--with therapists making up the other .01% of the
population).  So CAMTC and the law are not concerned with the rights of, or
economic interests of, the massage industry.  It is the duty of the AMTA-CA and
other massage organizations to represent practitioner interests.

As an aside, in attempting to crack down on prostitution, CAMTC's hand to de-certify
those caught (arrested) is limited and a time consuming process apparently.  The
practitioner first must be charged and convicted or there is a sworn declaration by
an officer before CAMTC can investigate revoking certification.  In order for
investigation to happen very strict legal protocol must be followed by law
enforcement.  CAMTC actually has an attorney on staff to go out into the
communities to train law enforcement about the proper procedures.  Limiting
human trafficking and Asian massage spas (or limiting any kind of competition) is
not within the purview of CAMTC.  Those fronts for prostitution and human
trafficking Netanel said will ultimately be taken care of in the market place, meaning
when people quit visiting they will disappear.  But he did admit this could take
decades.
