4 Crucial Steps to Preserve Your Deck
Your wood deck takes a beating every year from the sun and weather, so it's important that it's maintained annually to ensure its attractive appearance. Also, because wood rot is prevalent in Florida, semi-annual upkeep keeps your deck safe for your guests as well. Here are some steps to take to preserve the beauty of your deck's wood:
1. Check for damaged boards every six months.
- Measure damaged boards before you remove them.
- Purchase only pressure-treated replacement boards.
- Seal all sides of the wood prior to installation.
2. Check for structural support damage every six months.
- The structural supports are the most important part of your deck, and unfortunately, it's a perfect place for insects to flourish and animals to take up residence. Also, water damage in Florida can cause wet rot that breaks down the wood.
- Check for popped nails or screws, and replace them.
3. Pressure wash your deck once a year and use cleaning solution if necessary. - A scrub brush is also effective if you don't have a pressure washer, or don't want to rent one. Let the deck dry before staining or sealing.

4. Stain or seal your deck once a year.
- If the deck already has a finished or sealed surface, remove the finish or seal with a stripper that you can purchase at your hardware store. Follow the directions on the package.
- Once the deck is completely dry, sand it to smooth it. Be sure to wear a dust mask or respirator to prevent the inhalation of particles and fumes. A medium grit sandpaper will work for most decks. Remove any sanding dust left behind.
- Purchase new sealant or stain. Make sure any stain you choose is meant for the outdoors and can protect the wood from the elements. Apply the finish or sealant. If you're using a colored finish, paint a test spot first to see if the color you chose is indeed the color you want.
Using a foam brush, staining pad, or nylon/polyester brush, apply the stain or sealant along the grain of the wood. For colored finishes, work quickly and complete the job in one session. Stopping in the middle of the session and returning later can cause the finish to dry unevenly, leaving you with streaks.
- Let the stain or sealant dry, which should take approximately two hours (depending on humidity and temperature).
- Add another coat and possibly a third to enhance the protection of your deck. You'll be amazed at the difference.
