HALLOWEEN goes GREEN!

Although it may require a little more time, effort, and creativity, making a Halloween costume from re-purposed household items is a lot of fun, inexpensive, and it's GREEN! Think of the amount of plastics and fabrics from Halloween costumes that enter a landfill after this holiday. How wasteful! This year, try one of the do-it-yourself costumes found in our e-newsletter! Or, get really creative and think of your own recycled, repurposed, and eco-friendly costumes!

Send us your DIY 2011 Halloween costume pictures at

recycle robot
1. Recycle-bot

Cardboard boxes are one of the most commonly found household materials that make for several great halloween costumes. In order to create this awesome recycled robot suit, search through your recycling bin, basement, or junk drawer for:

  • 1 Large rectangular cardboard box for body
  • 1 Smaller square cardboard box for head
  • Duct tape for assembly
  • Air ducts segmented into pieces for arms and legs
  • Silver spray paint (or any color of your choosing)
  • Miscellaneous chips, bytes, or other computer pieces or paint for decorating.
Take 1 large rectangular cardboard box, cut the bottom off. Measure and cut out arm holes and an opening at the top of the box for the head to come through. Take the smaller box and cut the bottom off. Cut a circular hole in one of the sides for the head to show through. Measure and cut air ducts to fit the length of arms and legs. Attach to large box with duct tape. Decorate the front of the large box with various chips, bytes, or other old electronic pieces you might have in your home. You can also use paint to create buttons or other gears onto your robot's body. Have fun, and be creative! These are just suggestions for making your recycled robot!

owl costume

2. Night Owl

Check out this adorable owl costume that repurposes old T-shirts into feathers! What you will need:

  • Several old t-shirts, or scraps of fabric for 50-60 feathers (use multi-colored shirts to create tropical bird)
  • One long sleeve t-shirt
  • Hot glue gun for attaching
  • Sunglasses
  • Cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Tape
Cut up several old t-shirts into tear-drop shaped pieces. You will need 50-60 feathers. Glue the feathers onto a long sleeved t-shirt, starting from the bottom, and working your way up. Continue until you reach the top, and then form a circle at the neck line.
Create an owl face mask out of cardstock and cut it out. Attach your mask onto a pair of sunglasses using tape. HOOT! HOOT! You're now ready to fly away in your recycled and repurposed owl costume!

lego

3. LEGO People

Why not be a LEGO!? This costume is extremely easy to re-create, and it reuses items that most people have at home! What you will need:

  • 1 Large cardboard box
  • 1 Bottle of tempera paint or spray paint (whichever color you'd like your LEGO)
  • 1 Matching sweatshirt to match your paint choice
  • Scissors or a box cutter
  • Disposable paper bowls
  • Hot glue gun
Take 1 large cardboard box and cut out the bottom. Cut holes in the top for your head and on the sides for your arms to come through. Attach small paper bowls to the front of the box using a glue gun. If you are doing this with a partner, cut circular holes the same width as the paper bowls into the backsides of the boxes so that you can fit your LEGO pieces together! Paint your box (it may need 2 coats). Voila! You're a human LEGO!

Modern Art

4. Modern Masterpiece

Are you an aficionado of modern art? Show off your passion for art and your own artistic skills by recreating your favorite Pollack, Mondrian, or Rothko painting. What you will need:

  • 1 Old white sheet
  • OR 2 Large panels of cardboard (same size)
  • OR An old tarp
  • Various colors of Paint
  • Safety pins, need and thread, or duct tape
Use an old sheet, a sheet of cardboard, or an old tarp as your "canvas". Re-create your own original piece of art, mimicking the style of a past master painter. (A lot of these painters had a style that is very easy to imitate. If you aren't familiar with any of these artists, start with a brief Art History lesson to educate yourself on a particular artists' style.) Once your art is done, attach it to an old long sleeve shirt using safety pins or a needle and thread. If you are using cardboard as your canvas, create shoulder straps with duct tape and adhere to another piece of cardboard, the same size as your canvas. Hang the boards on your shoulders to display the work you've just created!
