News from St. Paul's Episcopal Church                             June/July  2016

June/July 2016

Dear Friends,

As I write this letter early on a Wednesday morning, I am in my running clothes ready to head out for my last run before the race I've been training for the past six months: The Soldier Field "10". The "10" stands for ten miles.  Less than two weeks ago I had on a winter hat and gloves for my long training run of eight miles.  This morning I'm wearing shorts.  Summer is here! Finally!  Summer always seems to sneak up on us like this doesn't it?  However it arrives, I'm glad it's here.  I'm also glad that this big race is here because I'm ready to stop training and start having fun with my exercise adventures.

Gone are those days of childhood when there was so much fun to be embraced in the summer that we often grew bored with it before school started again. Now we wish we had that much time to enjoy when the weather is favorable.  If we are thoughtful and intentional about how we approach this summer there is still plenty of time for recreation and leisure. Turn off the screens. Open up the windows. Get out and sit on the patio. Take a walk. Listen to the birds. Appreciate the sun on your face and the wind in your hair. This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!

Did you know you can have fun at church too?  It's true!  Are schedules are relaxed in the summer at St. Paul's, but there's still plenty of ways to give thanks to God through service in your church and in our neighborhood. We are continuing a practice we began last summer for our summer Sunday morning ministries in the Holy Eucharist: First to Come, First to Serve.  Ever wanted to try reading a lesson or leading the prayers of the people? Perhaps you've wondered about serving communion as a chalice bearer? Come a few minutes early to service, pick up the appropriate name tag and give it a try.  Don't worry about being perfect, have fun! It's all to the glory of God, and therefore pleasing in God's sight.

Do you like pulling weeds or hanging out in your lawn chair on a summer evening? Come out on Tuesday nights from 6:30-7:30 to work in the Thrive Garden and hang out with friends and neighbors.  We'll end each garden evening with a short prayer and send you home for a peaceful night.  And sign up to work at one of our three Thrive Markets this season starting on Saturday July 16th. We always have fun giving away produce from the garden for an affordable price and talking with our neighbors.

Like to read? Look for emails later this summer about a summer read-a-long we are planning with C.S. Lewis' The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.  And if you haven't checked out our Adult Sunday School lately (9:15A.M. In the conference room), you are definitely missing out on some fun!  We are reading Joan Chittister's The Ten Commandments: Laws of the Heart.

Whatever you do for fun this summer, stay in touch, be safe, and give thanks for the presence of God in your life and in the world about you. A prayer for the "Good Use of Leisure" from the Book of Common Prayer p. 825: "O God, in the course of this busy life, give us times of refreshment and peace; and grant that we may so use our leisure to rebuild our bodies and renew our minds, that our spirits may be opened to the goodness of your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

God's Peace be with you,

New Sunday Schedule

The new schedule began on May 22nd. There is now one service on Sundays at 10:30 A.M. followed by coffee and fellowship.

Sunday School for Adults continues year round at 9:15 A.M. and Children's Sunday School will resume in the fall at 9:15 A.M.

We will occasionally use the rich tradition of Rite I at the 10:30 AM service. This summer, Rite I will be used during the month of July.
Lobster Boil 2016!

Our 47th annual Lobster Boil happened on an absolutely gorgeous day, with warm temperatures and plenty of sun.  Everything went very smoothly and a good time was had by all. The old hands helped the new folks figure out how things worked.  We sold 980 lobsters and made a profit of several thousand dollars, which the ECW will split between the church and several local charities.

About a dozen children helped us, supervised by Jamie Stubblefield and Rev. Stacy.  The older children assisted the younger ones, and they all clearly enjoyed being useful workers. Rhys Prall headed up the cooking, with help from his apprentice Natale Biundo and several assistant cooks. Peg Newby supervised the garage operation, and Jocelyn Prall supervised the tent crew. Vince McMahon ran the 4:00 live lobster pickup, while Roy Mason and his crew directed traffic. Jennie and Bill Cummings ran the post-Boil party, with about 40 people celebrating the end of a tiring but fun and productive day.

I especially want to thank my co-chair Pat Brown, who runs the financial side of Lobster Boil. She has an amazing ability to keep track of exactly how many extra lobsters we have to sell and remains calm in the face of the chaos. I also want to give a shout out to our long term publicity person Rosemarie Ostberg: thank you Rosemarie!  Terry Dickow also deserves a special mention for calming an irate and impatient customer.

Finally, I want to thank all of you who helped with the preparations, came out for the Boil, and made it work.  I am amazed and grateful at how well our parish and friends work together to make Lobster Boil a successful and fun event for our community.  Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am looking forward to next year's event, on May 20, 2017.  Mark your calendars!

Treasurer's Report:
St Paul's Episcopal Church, DeKalb, IL 60115
May 2016 Mars Hill Treasurer's Report with March and April 2016 figures:

This report covers the month of April 2016 with March 2016 figures included. The Vestry receives a monthly worksheet of financial details. If anyone would like a copy, please let me know. The American Midwest Bank changed its name to Heartland Bank in May. The checking account with them is our primary operating account. Accounting reports are compiled by American Midwest Tax and Accounting, Inc. whose office is on Elm St. in Sycamore next to the Heartland Bank downtown branch. Sheila Appel is our primary contact.

Receipts through April 30, 2016 (Details in worksheet mentioned above)
We have received 55% of the pledged amount and 38% of the total budgeted receipts for the first four months. Year to date receipts as of 4/30/16 were $78,315. Pledge amount totals were $55,905.  We received one large yearly pledge in a lump sum in January.

Disbursements through April 30, 2016
Total operating disbursements for the first two months were 35% of the budgeted amount. The total year to date disbursements were $74,064. The difference between receipts and disbursements year to date is $4,251 on the positive side. This includes a $20,000 allocation from the Endowment Fund from the $100,000 budgeted for the year.

Building Fund
The balance in the Edward Jones Building Fund at the end of April was $30,000 in CD's and $4,242.99 in the Money Market Fund totaling $34,242.99.  The total April balance of Building funds including $9,528.53 in the American Midwest Bank (Heartland Bank) account was $43,778.11. This includes $1,500+ for the music Fund and $1,327.90 in memorial Funds for Eva Leonard.

Endowment Fund
The value of the Endowment Fund at the end of April was $1,914,541.  The net decrease in value for the year was ($6,905.) According to the Bylaws we may use up to 5% of the yearly average monthly ending balance in the Endowment fund for operating costs.  At the end of April 4% of that figure was $77,718, and 5% was $97,147. During March and April the stock market has made some recovery and the values are up slightly. Our balance is ahead of what it was in January.

Apache Stock -
The 6.048 shares on deposit with the company were valued at $329 on April 30, 2016. The value has increased $60 since the beginning of the year.

Discretionary Fund $134.35                      Flower Fund $469.45
Columbarium Fund $2,056.80                   Operating Fund $4,721.70
 Building Fund $9,528.53                             Total $16,910.83

Respectfully submitted
Pat Brown, Treasurer,   May 24, 2016.

A special "Thank You" to The Adult/Youth and Children's Choirs for a wonderful year of their beautiful and spirited singing while leading and enhancing our worship services! Here is a link to the Adult/Youth Choirs inspired singing of the Recognition Sunday anthem, "I Will Sing With the Spirit" by John Rutter

The Children's Choir has been meeting weekly over most of the last year (shown with our graduating NIU accompanist, Huixin Chen). This has been beneficial and shows in their shared musical growth, self esteem and spirit in anthem work and performance, as well as fellowship. You kids & parent's are awesome!

The choirs are on summer break until the fall. The congregational choir (all of you sitting in the pews) and our
organist, Kathleen Johnson, will be leading our worship services over the summer. Don't let your self be bashful, nudge your neighbors elbow on those hymns, smile and sing out for yourself, each other, and celebrate the shared moments of worship!

Bike MS - Jackies Jokers
Team from St. Paul's

Did you know there is a bike team from St. Paul's for the MS Tour de Farms in June?

Rev. Stacy and I, Terry Dickow, will be riding to raise money to battle MS. MS, multiple sclerosis, is a disease that affects a lot of people, including my wife and several other people you may know. The only way to find a cure, or even a cause, is to research the disease. Research cost money.

10 Facts about MS
  1. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, unpredictable disease of the central nervous system.
  2. More than 2.3 million people are affected by MS worldwide.
  3. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50.
  4. Women are much more likely to develop MS than men.
  5. There is no evidence MS is directly inherited.
  6. It is challenging to diagnose MS.
  7. No two people have exactly the same symptoms.
  8. MS symptoms can be invisible.
  9. The majority of people with MS do not become severely disabled.
  10. MS has no cure.
The MS Tour de Farms is a huge fund raising ride. Taking place over two days the last weekend in June, riders can choose from a variety of distances. Last year Rev. Stacy rode the 35 mile route while I opted for the 15 mile tour.

You can donate directly to either of us or by going to the website. Search bike MS Tour de Farms 2016 and find the donate button on the upper right. You can donate directly to Rev. Stacy, me, or to Jackies Jokers, the name of our team.

And if you are interested in joining us for the ride, that would be awesome!! Check out the details on the website or talk to one of us.

Thank you for your support.

We are a delightful group of 10-12 souls, who abide by one strict
principle: All are welcomed to participate in the Sunday discussions even if you have not read the designated reading for the week. Please join!

Adult Christian Education is excited to announce that the group will be meeting each Sunday in the summer to discuss Joan Chittester's The Ten Commandments:  Laws of the Heart which can be obtained on Amazon.com

Exciting News in the Garden!
Eight "raised bed" gardens have been added to our garden space. Our partnership with the DeKalb County Community Gardens, hard work of enthusiastic students and our own parishioners on NIU Cares/ Clean Up our Church Day, and approval from our Vestry helped make this wonderful improvement to the Thrive Garden. Sponsorships (or adoption!) of a raised bed garden are welcome. A "growing tomato plant" on the bulletin board will mark our progress towards our goal of $800 towards funding our raised beds. Each raised bed sponsorship is $100 dollars, but all levels of participation are welcome. Consider joining with a group to help sponsor a raised bed.

Come find out how to be involved!
Contact Rebecca Smith with questions.

Ministry Schedules this Summer

Summer schedules are often more unstructured with people away for vacations. We're going to try a less formed schedule for the ministries for the service this summer.

Each Sunday in June, July and August, there will be name tags with the roles of Eucharistic Minister, Acolyte, Lector, Intercessor and Usher laying out on the tables. To take on that role, simply take up the name tag that day. There will be instructions posted. The Acolyte will process in with the Priest and the Eucharistic Minister will join the Priest at Communion time.

If you are thinking of reading and want to see the passages for the morning ahead of time, the Sunday bulletin is posted on the website, www.stpaulsdekalb.org, by Wednesday mornings.

The Coffee Host will need to make the coffee ahead of the service, so remember that there is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall for each Sunday.
Breakfast with Bishop Lee

Forty members of the Diocese came to listen and talk about congregation vitality and leadership at St. Paul's as part of Bishop Lee's desire to support and encourage
congregations. Watch this brief video to learn more about Bishop Jeff's vision for how we participate in the Episcopal branch of the Jesus movement.
