News from St. Paul's Episcopal Church      December 2015-January 2016

January-December

Dear Friends,

On December 24th we will celebrate the day a new conversation began between the Creator of the Universe and the most curious of her/his creations: us. Christmas is really not a birthday party for Jesus. Christmas is that day we lift up in song and wonder the mystery of the Incarnation--God with us as one of us for the salvation and reconciliation of the world. All wrapped up in a holy child named Jesus. In Jesus, God began a new conversation with us not from an other worldly place, but right where we live in this world. So, how's your conversation with him going? Are you listening? Have you offered a word lately? Have you let Jesus get a word in edgewise?

Back in August everyone was asking me, "What are you going to do on your sabbatical?"  I had some ideas of what I might do, but I was careful to stay open to the Spirit and see what God might have in mind for this sacred time. As it turns out reconnecting with friends and engaging in new conversations turned out to be a big theme of my sabbatical time.  With no sermons or other church communications to write, I had a lot of time to think and a lot of time to listen.  I called friends I haven't talked to in years. I called a friend from college I had been meaning to call for six months. We had a great conversation about parenting and faith. Another call was to a seminary friend who I realized I had said, "Gee I ought to call her", TWELVE months prior.

I spent one entire morning talking to a friend about writing, God, and zombies. I even made new friends, including someone passionately involved in advocating for the preservation of tropical rainforests from an interfaith perspective. These and many other conversations were marvelous experiences.

Of course, some of the conversations I had were harder than others. And some were simply not fun at all. In those times I was so very grateful for the patient listening presence of my friends. I was also really grateful for my daily conversation with God that I faithfully kept every morning of sabbatical. I pray I will have the grace and humility to continue to do so each morning for the rest of my days.

As Christmas approaches I know many of you will be facing some difficult conversations, often with family members. Some of you may feel very alone. Perhaps the person you most want to talk to simply isn't around anymore. I assure you, friends, you are never alone. God is ever at your elbow. I have a magnet on my refrigerator that reminds me everyday: "God is as near as a whispered prayer." Do yourself a favor: come to church this Sunday and pick up an Advent devotional book from Living Compass and/or a copy of Forward Day by Day. Devotionals and the Bible are wonderful tools with which we can listen in on the holy conversations of our spiritual ancestors and also our living friends in Christ--people who like us are following Jesus as best they can day in and day out. These guides are helpful companions in conversation with God when we aren't sure what to say. Reading devotions gives us an opportunity to listen. And listening is essential to all healthy conversations.

Know that I am here to listen as well. In fact, conversations with y'all is one of the best parts of the work I am called to do as a priest and pastor. Don't hesitate to give me a call. And if you notice that someone needs to talk, make the time to listen to them. Be a gift to a friend today by your attentive listening presence. You won't be disappointed. You may even see a glimpse of the kingdom of God.

In Christ,

"Joy to the World,
The Lord is Come!"

Christmas Eve,
Thursday, December 24th,
6:00 PM Service

Bring the whole family to the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Come be with us for joyful music, Holy Communion, and happy rejoicing. Light refreshments follow the service.

From the Senior Warden, Peggy Newby

Because this is a "double issue" Proclaimer, this will be my last Senior Warden article!  I am feeling a bit ambivalent about this.  While I have enjoyed facing the challenges and working towards meeting our goals, I will be happy to step back and let others do this work.  I am very grateful for the way the Vestry, staff, and congregation stepped up during Rev. Stacy's sabbatical.  We carried on, but WELCOME BACK!

I hope you will continue to search your heart and calendar to find or make time to serve our church however you possibly can.  Any contribution, whether serving on the Vestry or performing another of our many ministries, is huge to our parish life.   Thank you for all you do!

I so enjoy the Advent and Christmas season.  While I admit to happily participating in the secular world's month-long celebration, I appreciate the church's waiting period.  It makes me slow down and remember to let the season play out in a more realistic way.  Then joy abounds, and we sing happily clear through Epiphany.  I hope you, along with your family and friends, can find enjoyment and peace this season.

See you Sunday!

From the Junior Warden, Rick Johns

Diocesan Convention Report

Peg Newby and I attended the 178th Annual  Convention of the Diocese of Chicago in Lombard last weekend, despite some absolutely horrible weather on Saturday.  It was my first convention, and I found parts that were awe-inspiring.  The worship services were amazing:  so many people singing together and worshipping together!  Bishop Lee preaches a powerful sermon that made me proud to be an Episcopalian.  It was also nice to have the Bishop of the Diocese of Southeast Mexico present, and we received a taped greeting from the Bishop of the Diocese of Renk.  The workshop I attended on institutional racism was very thought-provoking.  We also enjoyed workshops on such relatively mundane matters as social media and planned giving.

The most difficult part of the convention for me was a resolution to divest from any corporation that did business in the Israeli-occupied West Bank territory.  Let me tell you that politically I am a liberal.  However, I know we have church members with many different political opinions.  I would like all of us to feel welcome in the church, for us to be able to set aside our differences for the sake of a common purpose and worship.  This resolution made it clear that there many people present with strongly held (and expressed) views that are quite different from mine.  I rose to speak against it, and also voted against it.  The resolution failed by a single vote: 141-142.  I am glad, and I am troubled by this.  The resolution was in no way a consensus opinion of those present, and very probably not of the members of our diocese in general.

For me, the diocesan convention was inspiring and thought-provoking, a very interesting and worthwhile experience that made me feel more connected to the larger Episcopal Church.

Fall at St. Paul's - Rally Sunday, Pet Blessing,

Treasurer's Report:
November 2015 Mars Hill Treasurer's Report with October 2015 figures

This report covers the month of October 2015. Our primary operating account is the checking account at the American Midwest Bank, which recently was sold to the Heartland Bank. The new bank no longer wants to maintain the Tax and Payroll Department. Sheila Appel, our principal accountant at the bank, and two other employees were able to buy the business in mid-October and form a new corporation. They are willing to continue as our accountants at the same billing rate. Their office is on Elm St. in Sycamore next to the American Midwest Bank downtown branch. Peg Newby and I have found them very helpful in the transition.  Accounting reports are now compiled by American Midwest Tax and Accounting, Inc.

Receipts through October 31, 2015
We have received 85% of the pledged amount and 90% of the total budgeted receipts for the ten month period. Year to date receipts as of 10/31/15 were $198,152. The last allocation of $20,000 for operations has been withdrawn from the Endowment Fund. We have received 117% of budgeted open plate support but are behind in the budgeted ID offerings. ID offerings are from parishioners who give regularly but do not pledge. They are assigned a number and receive updates but are not included in pledged receipts.  We have had fewer of these this year than in the past. Pledge amounts still due total $16,589.

Disbursements through October 31, 2015
Total operating disbursements for the ten month period were 88% of the budgeted amount. The total year to date disbursements were $196,877. The difference between receipts and disbursements year to date is $1,276. on the positive side. This includes 100% of the $100,000 we have budgeted from the Endowment fund.

Building Fund
The balance in the Edward Jones Building Fund at the end of October was $30,000 in CD's and $9,064 in the Money Market Fund.  The total Oct 31 balance of Building funds including $4,848 in the American Midwest Bank account was $43,912. We paid $6,005 for parking lot sealing and striping completed in early October by Premier Pavements.

Endowment Fund
The value of the Endowment Fund at the end of October was $1,954,175. The net decrease in value for the year is ($87,515.)  According to the Bylaws we may use up to 5% of the yearly average monthly ending balance in the Endowment fund for operating costs. To exceed that amount would require a vote of parish members. At the end of October 4% of that figure was $81,119, and 5% was $101,398.

Apache Stock
The 5.979 shares on deposit with the company were valued at $288 on October 31, 2015. The value has decreased ($92) since the beginning of the year.

On October 31, 2015 Fund balances in the AMB checking account were as follows:
Discretionary Fund   $58.06   Flower Fund   $167.45    Columbarium Fund $2,064.30
Operating Fund $10,109.26    Building Fund $4,848.35       Total $17,247.42

A worksheet showing more detailed transactions for the year is available on request.

Respectfully submitted,
Pat Brown, Treasurer, November 17, 2015.

Blue Christmas Service
December 9th, 7:00 PM

The holiday season is often called "the most wonderful time of the year", yet for many people the holiday season is a difficult time, marked by stress and loneliness.

Broken relationships, ill health, unemployment, the loss of a loved one - all of these can leave people feeling "blue" in the midst of the society around us which seems focused on being happy and celebrating.

It is as such times that it is helpful to acknowledge our sadness and concern and know that we are not alone.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church invites all to attend a Blue Christmas gathering on Wednesday, December 9th, 2015 at 7:00 PM. The service will include prayers, Scripture and music that focus on on the hope and healing that God offers each one of us. There will be an opportunity to light a candle of remembrance.

Light refreshments and conversation will follow in the Parish Hall. No RSVP required - our doors will be open to all who come.
St. Nicholas Party, December 5th

The annual St. Nicholas party is coming up on Saturday, December 5th, 6:00-10:00 PM. Jane and George Nenonen have generously offered to host this festive adult-only gathering once again at their clubhouse. They will provide hot cider, coffee and water. Please bring along your favorite holiday nosh or nibble to share, and if you wish, you may bring another beverage of choice.

The address of the clubhouse is 2129 Waterbury Lane in Sycamore. Coming from DeKalb, head east on Bethany Road past Peace Road. There is a streetlight near the entrance to the complex and it is just past the big white farm house on the south side of Bethany. Coming from Sycamore, take Somonauk to Bethany and then west on Bethany. The entrance is on the south side of Bethany, just past a row of houses on the north. For more information contact George and Jane Nenonen.
St. Nicholas Sunday, December 6th

We'll be celebrating the feast of St. Nicholas at our 10:30 AM service on December 6th with a children's sermon. Come and hear the story about the original Santa Claus. "Mighty " boxes for collecting coins to benefit children's ministries will also be distributed. A coin a day in the "Mighty Box" reminds us of the true reason for the season - the arrival of the Christ Child for the healing of the world. We'll gather the Mighty Boxes on Tuesday, January 6th, at our Epiphany Celebration.

Love Heals
2015 Diocesan Convention

The 178th Annual Convention of the Diocese of Chicago took place on Friday, November 20 and Saturday, November 21 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard. The theme of this year's convention was "Love Heals," inspired by keynote speaker Becca Stevens and her ministry with Magdalene House and Thistle Farms.

The Peace and Justice Committee presented the 2015 Michael Yasutake Peace and Justice Award to the Rev. Dr. Bonnie A. Perry, and the Episcopal Church Women awarded grants to parish-based outreach projects around the diocese.

The Rt. Rev. Benito Juárez, bishop of the Diocese of Southeast Mexico, attended the convention and brought greetings from the people of his diocese, and the Rt. Rev. Joseph Garang Atem, bishop of the Diocese of Renk in South Sudan sent a video greeting. The Diocese of Chicago has longstanding companion relationships with both dioceses.

Delegates to the convention approved resolutions on diocesan boundaries; clergy compensation; convention secretary and historiographer roles; state gun licensing; and support for Syrian refugee resettlement. Download resolutions as acted upon by convention and read Bishop Lee's convention sermon.

Bishop Michael Curry Installed

On November 1st Right Reverend Michael B. Curry was installed as the 27th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in America at a ceremony in the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. His sermon at that ceremony can be found here.
Prayers for Peace

So many unsettled issues in the news today. Here's some responses to ponder from Lucinda Laird, the Dean of the American Cathedral in Paris and newly installed Presiding Bishop Michael Curry  on the troublesome acts of violence in Paris; and from Bishop Lee on the tragic results of racism on Chicago's streets.

From the Book of Common Prayer (p. 99), A Collect for Peace:
O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us,your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries: through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord.

November Food Pantry Report and Reminders

Thanks to all parishioners who contributed to Food Pantry Sunday in November.

In November, 355 diapers and 1000 wipes were donated for the Salvation Army Food Pantry on Food Pantry Sunday, November 8. The total number of items donated by St. Paul's members this year to this important community service is 7215.

St. Paul's has adopted the 1st Thursday of every month to help at the Salvation Army Food Pantry from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. We need another volunteer for February, May and August. Please contact Pat McMahon or Jennie Cummings if you can help out in these months or can substitute in other months.

The next Food Pantry Sundays are December 13th and January 10th. Although any contribution is most welcome, we are choosing one particular item as a priority each month.  For the month of December, the priority items will be pet food. Contributions may be made at any time during the month, not just on the second Sunday.

Thanks to all whose donations helped to make this a successful ministry.

Be a Gift to the World

The Rochelle Rotary Club sells a daily cash give away calendar that benefits Rochelle area agencies.  Groups dealing with domestic violence, sexual abuse, and elder care services all receive a portion of the calendar sales money, which is badly needed in these times of state funding cutbacks. When people  buy a calendar, they fill in a numbered entry form.   Each day a winner is chosen, with prizes ranging from $25 on a weekday to $50 on a weekend to $1,000 on major holidays.  Calendars are $20.  If you are interested in buying one, see Terry Dickow or contact him at dickow@comcast.net.

Gifts for Safe Passage
Participants - by Dec. 20

After consulting with the Safe Passage executive director and administrative staff, we are going to do the gifts to Safe Passage a little bit differently this year.  We will not be buying presents , gift wrapping and picking recipients, as we did in the past. Instead, St. Paul's will be collecting funds for gift cards for Safe Passage to distribute throughout the year to clients with the most urgent needs.  Sharon Dowen and Pat Brown will purchase the gift cards.

Please make your donation, in whatever amount you chose to give, by Sunday, December 20, so we can purchase and deliver the gift cards to Safe Passage before Christmas.  To contribute, you can make a check payable to St. Paul's Episcopal Church with "Safe Passage"  written on the memo line.  If you would like more information about Safe Passage or donating to this gift, please contact Pat Brown or Sharon Dowen.  Both are members of the Safe Passage Board and want to assure you that your thoughtfulness and generosity are greatly appreciated.
Baking Up Nice Surprises

The winter B.U.N.S. (Baking Up Nice Surprises) delivery is coming around again for December.  DeKalb County Hospice (DCH) would appreciate your help.   Three times a year, many of you prepare baked goods for hospice patients and bereaved families.   When DCH receives your cookies, fresh fruit, candies, breads, etc, a group of volunteers makes up gift bags filled with a variety of the goodies for hospice families.  DCH typically delivers 115 to 145 bags each time, and the gifts are much appreciated by the people who receive them.

To meet the next delivery, baked goods may be dropped off at the church kitchen on Sunday, December 6, 2015.  If possible, please put two or three your items together in small zip-lock bags.  This really helps the volunteers who pack the gifts.

If you have any questions or you'd like more information, contact Sharon Dowen at 815-758-1278.  She will deliver all the baked goods, fruit, and other items from St Paul's to the DeKalb County Hospice on Monday, December7, 2015.
Thanksgiving Baskets

St. Paul's contributed $300 in cash donations - the equivalent of 10 baskets.  I also delivered 6 meal baskets to the Salvation Army & 1 basket to the Piper/Sitzes family.

Our grand total from cash & food donations was 17 meals.  I am very pleased with our contribution and truly grateful for the support from our congregation for this excellent cause!  Thank you for help as well, Susan!
Sincerely, Maureen Gerrity
2016 Stewardship Campaign

Thank you to everyone who returned their pledge commitment card this fall.  To date, we have received 25 pledges.  Twelve of the 25 pledges represent increases, eight remained the same, and five were slightly lower.
As of late November, our pledged commitments total $101,475.  This is down $7,398 from 2015.  Of that $7398, 75% represents pledges no longer expected.  Our parish family has changed in the past year!  The budget/finance committee will be meeting very soon to begin work on our 2016 budget.  Decisions will need to be made based on fixed expenses and our priorities.  This is challenging work, and your prayers and thanks are requested for members of that committee, comprised of Pat Brown, Rick Johns, Jamie Stubblefield, and Mary Lincoln.

While we do our concentrated pledge campaign at this time of year, commitments can be noted at any time.  Please let a Vestry member or Pat Brown, our Treasurer, know if you would like to make any additions.  And please pick up your pledge envelopes when they are available!  They really are helpful to those doing the weekly collection and deposit reporting.  Regular givers are also encouraged to use numbered envelopes.  Numbered envelopes provide information for tracking your giving, which is reported to you quarterly.

Another reminder - we do have Youth envelopes available.  If you would like a set of numbered envelopes for a child in your family, please let the office know.
You may recall that our pledge cards now contain a line for you to note if you are interested in leaving a planned (legacy) gift to the church.  There is a wealth of information about this subject.  Planning a gift or legacy is not just for the older population.  If you'd like more information, drop an email to Rev. Stacy or Susan, our parish administrator, or leave a note for either of them.

And finally, thank you again for all the consideration you give to stewardship.  Our financial support works hand-in-hand with our physical and spiritual support to provide a place of faith for our parish family and the wider community.
