News from St. Paul's Episcopal Church                                  June/July 2015

June and July 2015

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit.

-1 Thessalonians 5:16-19

Dear Friends,

This afternoon I participated in a conference call that was actually fun.  You are thinking perhaps someone should pinch my arm to make sure I wasn't dreaming!  I know! "Fun conference call" sounds like an oxymoron to me too!  Two things helped make this conference call enjoyable: 1. A user friendly video app, and 2. The people in the conference call were my colleagues and friends from across the Church.  It was delightful to see them chatting from their kitchens and local coffee shops. It was a joy to pray with them and be in continuing conversation with them about our dreams for the Episcopal Church and for the impact we can have as a Church for healing a world that is often in pain.

Isn't it so much more fun to dream with others?  Isn't it more fun to celebrate and rejoice in all circumstances with others?  I must say it is certainly easier to pray without ceasing with others than all by yourself.  Prayer is more than a petition, it's a conversation.  Our primary conversation partner is God.  Our God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: One God.  The blessed Trinity of Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer is always in conversation and joyful relationship within Godself.  It is God's will that we reflect that same joyful relationship with one another in the Church.  It is God's dream that Christians would be in prayer and conversation with each other about the things that really matter.

Of course starting those meaningful conversations takes some effort.  We have to be  willing to raise our own voice for  there to be a ceaseless voice of prayer resounding in our parish. We have to show up and drink some coffee, eat some crepes, pull some weeds, set up a garden market, visit the sick, set the table, sing some hymns, and check our own fears and anxieties with which we attempt to quench the Spirit.

Thankfully, we have a rhythm to our parish prayer life that you can plug into several times a week: Sundays at 8&10:30A.M. (Holy Communion), Wednesdays at 9:30A.M. (Healing prayers and Holy Communion), and Tuesdays at the Garden at 6:30P.M. (Compline-prayers at the close of the day).  Start there, and who knows? Perhaps you will find the Blessed Trinity inviting you to start a conversation about what really matters.   Chances are someone else has been wanting to talk about the very same thing.

Yours In Christ,

Rev. Stacy+

General Convention of the Episcopal Church

During this year's General Convention held in Salt Lake City from June 24th to July 2nd, there will will be elections for the new Presiding Bishop and several resolutions will be discussed.

As we prepare for the 78th General Conventiontwo opportunities are available for members of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago to share their thoughts with, and to hear from, the members of our deputation. Among the many important topics at this General Convention are reports and resolutions of the Task Force on the Study of Marriage, Task Force on Reimagining the Episcopal Church (TREC) and the election of a presiding bishop.

Meetings with deputies to General Convention are scheduled for Thursday, May 28 from 6 - 7:30 pm at St. James Commons (participation by video call will be available) and on Saturday, June 13 from 10:30 - noon at St. Peter's, Sycamore. For more information please contact Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows.

To get to know the four candidates, Bishop Thomas E. Briedenthal, Bishop Michael B. Curry, Right Rev. Ian Douglas, and Right Rev. Dabney Smith, videos were made as they were asked two questions:

1. What changes would you encourage in the Church to enable us to be the Church       God is calling us to be?

2. In the Good News of Jesus, what do you feel most called to share with the Church     in this moment?

Prayers of the People
Brother Geoffrey Tristram writes:

"As I mentioned last week, Brother, Give Us A Word will be helping collect Prayers of the People for the General Convention of the Episcopal Church, 24th of June 2015 through the 2nd of July. For that period we will send an extra email a day in advance asking if you consider writing a prayer or sending an image on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

The prayers will follow one of nine themes, seven of which are the forms of prayer identified in the Book of Common Prayer: life, thanksgiving, praise, intercession, adoration, oblation, penitence, petition, and celebration. I preparation for this time of prayer I commend a sermon by my brother David on the theme of Praise at #Praise: Our True Vocation. We invite your prayers to the God of Life in words and images on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram in the format Praise. You may want to start "I praise you..."

On the day at the General Convention when Prayers of the People are on the theme of Praise, Brother, Give Us A Word will have a short meditation on Praise and a link to a special audio Morning Meditation that the Brothers have recorded. Later that day Brother, Give Us a Word will send you a link to the special audio Evening Reflection on Praise. To learn more please visit www.prayersofthepeople.org."

Yours faithfully, Br. Geoffrey Tristram, Superior

Help Our Prayer Tree Grow

"May we be like trees planted by streams of water" from Psalm 1 was the inspiration for our prayer tree that was "planted" in the back of the Sanctuary by the Sunday School students. We'd like to continue adding "leaves" with prayers on them (green post it notes) through the summer to visualize our prayer lives. Add your prayers for help, for thanks, for awe - in tangible form - that our faith might grow, too. Please also look for the "Household Prayers" in the back of the bulletin each week to help our daily prayer lives grow.

From the Senior Warden, Peggy Newby

Summer is here!  Finally!  Midwesterners are a hardy bunch.  We take what we get (not without grumbling!), and appreciate the good times.   I hope this summer finds you able to spend time with family and friends.  As I have mentioned before - if you find yourself out of town on Sunday, log on to our website and read through the service bulletin.   It will help you stay connected with your parish family.

There will be plenty of activities for those of us who "hang around" all summer.  In addition to worship services, please take advantage of fellowship and outreach opportunities.  Before we know it, we will be organizing for fall activities.  Try to be open to accepting a request to serve on a committee, help with a fellowship activity, or maybe join the worship team.  It takes all of us to fulfill our Mission and Vision Statements.

See you Sunday!

Peg Newby

The Lobsters Came!
Thank you!

Lobster Boil came off without a hitch On May 16.  The weather was beautiful, despite earlier predictions of thunderstorms.  We sold 1025 lobsters, just slightly less than last year's 1050, and we expect to have a nice profit that will benefit many local organizations.  We had plenty of help, including a young but enthusiastic team of runners.   We had a very nice after-party and shared fellowship during the event.  It was amazing to see how smoothly things ran: old hands showing new folks how things worked and everyone busy doing what was needed. The Lobster Boil co-chairs, Pat Brown and Rick Johns, especially want to the various coordinators: Peg Newby, Jamie Stubblefield, Roy Mason, Jennie Cummings, Luke Krueger, Jocelynn Prall, Rhys Prall, and Pat McMahon.  And we send a big heartfelt thank you to everyone who put up posters, sold lobsters, helped with the preparations, came out and worked on Saturday, or helped clean up afterwards.  This event wouldn't be possible without all of you!  Next year's Lobster Boil is Saturday May 21-mark your calendars.

Treasurer's Report

May 2015 Mars Hill Treasurer's Report

with March and April 2015 figures:

This report covers the month of March and April 2015.  The American Midwest Bank checking account is our primary operating account. Accounting is done by the American Midwest Bank Tax and Payroll Department. Since this report covers two months I will

summarize the April results and mention March activities if pertinent.

Receipts through April, 2015

We have received 54% of the pledged amount, and 46% of the total budgeted receipts or the four month period. Year to date receipts as of April 30th are $101,814.90.

Disbursements through April, 2015

Total operating disbursements for the four month period are 37% of the budgeted amount. The total year to date disbursements are $82,449.65. The difference between receipts and disbursements year to date is $19,365.25 on the positive side. In March we deposited $40,000 from the Endowment fund into the Operating fund for cash flow purposes. Our annual allocation from the Endowment is budgeted as $100,000.  After consulting with Matt Myre, our Edward Jones representative who manages the Endowment and Building Funds, we determined this was a sensible move at this time.

Building Fund

The balance in the Edward Jones Building Fund at the end of April is $45,735.96, $30,000 in CD's and $15,734.96 in the Money Market Fund.  The total balance of Building funds including $7,035.81 in the American Midwest Bank account is $52,770.57.  During April we received a $1,437.82 memorial contribution from a new parish member as well as $125 in other contributions. There were no disbursements from the Building fund in March or April. Projects such as parking lot repair and resealing are planned for summer.

Endowment Fund

The value of the Endowment Fund at the end of April totaled $2,096,985.28. The net increase in value for the year is $55,294.76 which includes the ($40,000) allocation for operating expenses.

Apache Stock

The 5.921 shares on deposit with the company had a value of $405 on April 30, 2015. The value has increased $33.90 since the beginning of the year.

On April 30, 2015 the balance in the AMB checking totaled $37,824.97. The Flower Fund balance shows a negative ($212.45); Discretionary Fund - $462.51; Columbarium Fund - $1,464.30.  The Garden Fund shows a -0- balance but soon will have receipts from the farmer's market.  Building fund portion - $7,035.81 and Operations balance - $28,474.80. We had a Tornado Relief fund with a balance of approximately $725. This was augmented with a donation of $500 from the Bishop's Fund of the Diocese. These funds were distributed to Tornado victims in late April.

Respectfully submitted,

Pat Brown, Treasurer,  May 17, 2015

                                                                                                 Thanking the Leonards

St. Paul's is so blessed to have so many talented artists and musicians share and enhance our worship services!

A huge thanks, to all the musicians at St. Paul's for a wonderful church school year of time, talent, spirit, presence and fantastic music leading!

I am happy and sad to say farewell and good luck to several of our choir members, as they move on to another part in their life journey. Their spirits, voices, countless contributions to St. Paul's will be missed and cheered on from all of us! Good Luck, Tyler & Amanda Mitchell and Luke & Chris Krueger.

The Adult/Youth and Children's Choirs are off for the summer and are finishing up work on a CD. We hope to have St. Paul's first CD ready to share with anyone as a gift, through gift donations to the music and other programs, in the Fall - Sharing Music from the Six Major Liturgical Seasons: Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost, Advent and Christmas.
Congratulations to Sue Ouellette!

Sue has completed the 13 week training course in lay chaplaincy at Bishop Anderson House. a unique service of the Diocese of Chicago that ministers to persons who are ill and those who care for them. She is grateful to have the opportunity and to everyone who has supported her, and looks forward to learning more about what God has in store for her!

When Jackie was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, we had no idea how our lives were about to change.

At first it was minor inconveniences. She tired easily. Balance was a little off. Heat fatigued her. We could easily make changes to our daily lives. Long time members of St. Paul remember Barb and her struggle with MS. In comparison, our experience to MS has been much less severe.

About a year ago, Jackie started using a walker. She did this after a fall while I was gone. That's not the only change MS has caused. We sold our dream home, because the stairs were becoming dangerous. Falls are more common.Vacation plans have altered because travel is now difficult. Sometimes even getting up in the morning is a job she can't do. I don't mean to sound whiney on this, it's just the path God has chosen for us. And sometimes that path stinks.

Some MS facts:  Affects women more then men. More common north of the 37th line of longitude. No known cause. No known cure. Rochelle, Shabbona, Paw Paw are all hotspots, with higher than average incidences.

I started getting involved in MS fund raising events because money is needed to do research to find a cause and a cure. No money, no cure. June 27 Rev. Stacy and I are riding in the Tour de Farms Bike MS event. We have a team -- Jackies Jokers---- and we are accepting donations. Tour de Farms is a huge event. We will be riding Saturday. If you want to join our team, please do. Realize each rider is expected to raise $300 in contributions, so if you join, get people to help you.

You can contribute by going to this website:

Click on the donate button and please support Rev. Stacy, me, or the team in general.  (Note:  Jackies Jokers does not have an apostrophe!)  You can also go to that spot and register to ride with us. Or,  you can give us a check made out to Bike MS Illinois.

Thank you, Terry Dickow
Summer Ministries

Summer schedules are often more unstructured with people away for vacations. We're going to try a less formed schedule for the ministries for the 10:30 AM service this summer. Each Sunday there will be nametags with the roles of Eucharistic Minister, Crucifer/Acolyte, Lector, Intercessor and Usher laying out on the tables. To take on that role, simply take up the nametag that day. There are instructions for the ushers posted. The Crucifer/Acolyte will process in with the Priest and the Eucharistic Minister will join the Priest at Communion time. If you are thinking of reading and want to see the passages for the morning ahead of time, the Sunday bulletin is posted on the website, www.stpaulsdekalb.org, by Wednesday mornings.

The Coffee Host will need to make the coffee ahead of the service, so there is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall for each Sunday.
