April 2015

Dear Friends,

As many of you know I have just returned from a two weeks in New York City at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women meeting  (UNCSW).

It was an honor to be a part of the first delegation from the Episcopal Church to this meeting of women and girls gathered from all around the world to advocate for women's empowerment and gender equality for the good of all humanity.  There were even a few men and boys present advocating for gender equality and talking about a "mature masculinity."  Someone else has likely said this before, but when women thrive everyone in the community thrives as well.

Underneath the celebration of thousands of people gathered to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women, there was to be found just beneath the surface many stories of struggle in our world when women are exploited and not invited to the table with men.  Here gathered at the UN were the people who were actively engaged in the struggle to dismantle patriarchy.  Here were people speaking out against gender based violence, human trafficking, climate change, and war. Here were people advocating for the rights of women and girls to adequate health care.  Here were people advocating for women to have a voice and vote in the governing bodies of their nations.  Here were people who had clearly said, "Yes, the world is indeed broken, and I'm going to work hard to make it better."  This gathering was a symbol of hope in an often hopeless world.

In our society, the Church is often seen as one of many options for a Sunday morning.  But the faithful know that the Church is so much more than that: it is a bearer of hope for those who are hurting and those who are seeking a God-give purpose in their life.  Yet even the faithful can  forget that the message of hope is not only to be given to those who walk through our doors.  The message of hope is meant to be carried out into the world, to give strength and encouragement to those who are suffering. And we also are called to show up and give those who are disenfranchised a voice--to help their stories be heard in the public forum.

As we celebrate Easter, let us remember that before the resurrection of Christ Jesus was his desolation on the cross.  In other words, before healing there is always a struggle. It is not an accident that we call the day of his crucifixion "Good". On Good Friday, Jesus entered into a struggle with evil and death so that through his resurrection the world might have abundant life.  This Good Friday as we contemplate the great struggle of Jesus for the sake of the world, I for one will remember the stories I heard at UNCSW and in other places of survivors as well as those who entered into sorrow with them to amplify their voices and to advocate for change in law and in culture.  As we kindle the great Paschal fire of the Easter Vigil, I will be looking with hope to the resurrection of Christ illuminated in the women who are suffering and striving for gender equality. For when women and girls are resurrected, all of humanity is given new life in abundance.

Yours In Christ,

Rev. Stacy+

Mmm, brunch!  Plan to join in the fun as we take another opportunity to all get together for delicious food and good fellowship on Sunday, April 12th.  Our annual Low Sunday Brunch will take place between services at 9:15, so be sure to join us for this celebratory meal.  There's a sign-up sheet on the table in the parish hall.  Please sign up to bring a brunch casserole, a side dish, or dessert.  If you don't want to bring food, you can sign up to help with clean up afterward.  Or just come and eat! Questions? Contact Sue Ouellette, 815-758-0024.
From the Senior Warden, Peggy Newby

As we enter Holy Week in preparation for Easter, I am encouraged by the change (for the good!) in our weather.  Whether we admit it or not, what's going on outdoors has a very direct effect on our mood and desire for activities.  We slog through winter, doing what needs to be done, and sometimes not much more.  Even Lent can be a "down" time, if you let it.  After joining St. Paul's, I became aware that Lent is something in which to participate, not dread and try to escape.  I hope you have kept a Holy Lent, and will be able to participate in Holy Week and Easter services.

I was able to get away for a short time earlier this winter.  While away, I took advantage of the fact that our church website makes the current week's bulletin available.  I was able to use the bulletin to lead myself through the service, read the announcements, and in general, feel a part of our parish even from afar.  I encourage you to consider doing this if you find yourself away from St. Paul's on any Sunday.  It's a great way to stay connected.

And if you didn't read Rev. Stacy's blog while she was in New York, you really should go to our website and find them. You will get at least a little taste of her adventures, which sure looked like the experience of a lifetime.

Our parish family has lots of things happening in the next few months.  Lots of opportunities to join in the fun and help with the work we have to do.   Please do what you can, and as always...

See you Sunday!

Peg Newby

The Adult/Youth and Children's Choirs are ready to jump into spring with music for Holy Week and Easter.

The Children's Choir will be singing for Palm Sunday, "Hosanna, Blessed Is He", the Saturday Vigil, "Give Me Oil In My Lamp" - in honor of brother Liam, and Easter Sunday will ring in a vibrant "Alleluia, Christ Is Risen" by Michael Bedford.

The Adult/Youth Choir will be singing for most of holy week, starting on Palm Sunday with "Hosanna, hosanna!" by Antonio Caldara. We hope to be cracking a few eggs while stomping some cool beats on Easter Sunday with a classical plain song rendition of the famous "The Lord is Risen" by William Billings.

Sue Ouellette,
Lay Chaplain at
Bishop Anderson House

Bishop Anderson House is a unique service offered by the diocese of Chicago.  Located in the medical district of the city, the staff of the Bishop Anderson House, along with volunteers,  minister to persons who are ill or and those who care for them.  One of the programs offered through this organization is a 13-week training program in lay chaplaincy.  I decided to enroll in this program to explore my deep desire to learn more about meeting the spiritual needs of individuals as well as their emotional needs. Classes are held each Wednesday evening from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Chicago on the Rush University Medical Center campus.  There are 11 trainees and the group includes a mix of religious backgrounds, including Buddhist, Lutheran, Methodist and Episcopalian We are led by the Reverend Jay Risk, an Episcopal priest, and also have many fascinating speakers on a variety of topics.  Our classes involve experiential exercises which allow us to practice the new skills we are learning.

We are also required to complete a practicum in which we offer our help as lay chaplains in training.  I am fortunate to be serving at the Oak Crest Retirement Center and to have the opportunity to visit with our parishioners who reside there as well as some of the other residents.  I also meet weekly with Rev. Stacy who is serving as my supervisor and adding much to my learning.  Our class will conclude in may with a dinner with Bishop Lee.   I am so grateful to have this opportunity and to everyone who has supported me in this process.  I look forward to learning more about what God has in store for me!

Good Friday Offering

Indigenous Christians throughout the Middle East are sometimes asked when they converted to Christianity. They often respond that they and their families date their faith back to the first Pentecost with the descent of the Holy Spirit in the earliest days of the Church. Christians throughout the Arab world claim spiritual roots which go back centuries.

The history of the Good Friday Offering reaches back to 1922 when, in the aftermath of World War I, The Episcopal Church sought to create new relationships with and among the Christians of the Middle East. From these initial efforts which focused on a combination of relief work and the improvement of ecumenical and Anglican relations, the Good Friday Offering was created. It is the work of shalom and salaam, building peace in the hearts of suffering individuals and communities.

There will be offering baskets to collect this offering at both the Noon and 6:00 PM services on Good Friday.
Episcopal Church Women Annual Meeting
