News from St. Paul's Episcopal Church                                       March 2015

March 2015

Dear Friends,

Do you remember the poster of the little orange kitten hanging precariously from a tree branch with the words: "Hang on! Friday's coming!"?  I remember it as being a popular poster available at the Scholastic Book Fairs of the 1980's. Every year at about this time I feel like that little kitten.  "Hang on!  Easter's coming!"  And surely that will mean also, "Hang on!  Spring/Thaw is coming!"  The good news it is March. The good news is this coming Sunday is the third of Lent.  We are well on our way to the reawakening of this dreary land and our weary hearts.

Last month I encouraged us to consider how we might be well in Lent.  I pray that you have found some rest, health, and wholeness in your fast.  I have been fasting from social media on Fridays and have been refreshed more than I imagined I would be. I hope you have been renewed as well because now we are moving to a transition that is not easy.

Before we can once again experience the glory of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus we must again walk the way of the cross with him and with one another. The spiritual work of Holy Week is not unlike the physical work gardeners do in the Spring to prepare the soil for planting. The compost must be turned over and spread. The ground tilled. The furrows made straight.  And the seeds planted not too early, and generously. Once all is planted the gardener must simply wait for the soil to warm enough to germinate the seeds.

This Holy Week (March 29th through April 4th) I invite you to join in the work of walking the way of the cross of Jesus with your church.  At no other time of year does the way in which we worship so closely merge with the scriptures with which we mark these holiest of days.  We enter with rejoicing into Jerusalem with palms and joyful expectation that has reverberated throughout the centuries. We prepare and share a meal as Jesus and his disciples did for their last supper.  We approach the cross with heavy hearts just as they did.  We wait in darkness outside the tomb looking for the light of salvation that God promises we will each know, and then on Easter we will again become witnesses in the world to the power of the resurrection.

I know it all seems a distant dream now as we gaze at the snow and ice covering the landscape.  But hang on, dear friends!  Easter is coming! And if Easter is coming, can Spring be far behind?

Yours In Christ,

Rev. Stacy+

Rev. Stacy to Represent Episcopal Church
at the United Nations Commission on
The Status of Women (UNCSW)

The Rev. Stacy Walker-Frontjes has been named by Presiding Bishop Katherine Jefferts Schori to the delegation representing The Episcopal Church at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) Meeting, March 6-20th in New York.  The delegation of twenty women and men is from across the Church in the United States and Latin America.  Rev. Stacy is delighted to be a part of the representation of the Episcopal Church at the UNCSW.  She looks forward to not only attending, but bringing back the stories of this experience to our community.  She hopes that from this experience she can collaborate with others who are advocating for the well being of women and girls locally and around the world. For the official press release please click here.

While she is at the conference, Reverend Stacy will send Tweets on her Twitter account, @stacywf, and will update her blog, Cry of the Indigio Bunting, every few days.

Feeling stressed out and not sure of what the Christian response ought to be? Make an appointment to talk to Rev. Stacy and consider the rite of the Reconciliation of a Penitent (See the Book of Common Prayer page 447- the Book of Common Prayer is also available online). Rev. We will also have creative storytelling skits for the Easter Vigil. There will be a meeting on Saturday, March 28 in the afternoon to get organized. Please contact Luke Krueger if you'd like to be part of these services.
From the Senior Warden, Peggy Newby

I hope you have been able to stay warm and cozy during this frigid period in Northern Illinois!  I also hope the weather starts being more conducive to being able to get out with friends and family.   Think about your parish family - is there someone you haven't seen for a while?  Give them a call.  Personal contacts suffer during these harsh months, but we can all do something to reduce the winter blahs.

During this Lenten season, there will be opportunities for reflection and fellowship, culminating in our Holy Week services and Easter.  It is a time for spiritual growth and celebration.  Please take advantage of what St. Paul's has to offer you, your family, and friends.

As I said last month, I am looking forward to moving ahead with projects already in progress, and helping determine direction for our future.  Once again, I cannot encourage you strongly enough to take an active role in the life of our parish.   There are opportunities for all - we need you!

See you Sunday!

Peg Newby

United Thank Offering

Our annual United Thank Offering (UTO) Ingathering (collection) is underway.  Please take a blue box, which can be found in both the sanctuary and the parish hall.   As you give thanks each day for your many blessings, drop a few coins into the box.  The Ingathering will be on March 22, and the money we collect will be presented at the ECW convention in late April.  If you would like more information about the Ingathering, please contact Peg Newby.

March 2015 Mars Hill Treasurer's Report

with February 2015 figures:

This report covers the month of January 2015.  The American Midwest Bank checking account is our primary operating account. Accounting is done by the American Midwest Bank Tax and Payroll Department. This account includes funds transferred from the Building Fund at Edward Jones to facilitate paying capital project bills. Our Building Fund major funds and the Endowment Fund are managed by Edward Jones.

Receipts through January 31, 2015

We have received 35% of the pledged amount and 17% of the total budgeted receipts by the end of the one month period. Operating receipts through January total $39,012. Several parishioners paid up their 2014 pledge balance in early 2015, and one family paid their entire pledge for 2015.

Disbursements through January 31, 2015

Total operating disbursements for the one month period were $19,396 which is 9% of the budgeted amount.  The difference of receipts over disbursements for the month was $19,616 ending the month with positive net receipts.

Building Fund

The balance in the Edward Jones Building Fund at the end of January was $44,158 - $30,000 in CD's and $14,158 in the Money Market Fund.  The total balance of Building funds including $6,581 in the American Midwest Bank account is $50,739.  During the month we received contributions of $485 in the regular building fund. There were no disbursements from the Building fund in January.

There is a balance from a recently matured CD in the Money Market which will provide funds for the driveway sealing slated for Spring 2015, and for more signage around the property. There is also a $10,000 CD maturing in March 2015. The Vestry voted to roll this over since the proceeds are not needed immediately for Capital projects.

Endowment Fund

The value of the Endowment Fund at the end of January was $2,034,926. The decrease in value for the year as of January 31, 2015 was ($6,082.) Net decrease was ($6,764.)  We have not taken any allocations from the Endowment Fund yet this year.

Apache Stock - The 5.898 shares on deposit with the company were valued at $369 on January 31, 2015. The value was approximately the same as at the end of 2014.

On January 31, 2015 the balance in the AMB checking was $37,492.15. The Flower Fund balance was $84.25; Discretionary Fund was $637.26; Columbarium Fund was $1,464.30.  The Garden Fund has a -0- balance.  Building fund portion was $6,580.81 and Operations balance was $28,725.53

Respectfully submitted

BISHOP EPTING'S VISIT, FEBRUARY 8

We were blessed to have Bishop Christopher Epting, Assisting Bishop in the Diocese of Chicago, visit us on Sunday February 8th. Rebecca Smith and Chelsea Coventry were officially received into the Episcopal Church that day. We also had wonderful conversation with Bishop Epting and guests at fellowship times.

The Children's Choir rehearses Thursday afternoons from 5:00-5:30 PM. We are practicing a few newer songs along with some traditional favorites such as "Jesus Loves Me". We continue to add Children friendly hymns along with a beating drum, tamborine, bell and even some liturgical dance to our liturgy.

The Adult/Youth Choir is currently working on some beautiful music for the remainder of Lent and Easter seasons.
