News from St. Paul's Episcopal Church                                   February 2015

February 2015

Dear Friends,

In my teenage years a big part of my life was talking on the phone. Like every other teenage girl of my generation I talked on the phone A LOT!  My parents never seemed to understand that there simply wasn't enough time to debrief the day in between classes with my nearest and dearest friends.  My afternoon and evening stretched before me with plenty of time to talk on the phone.  I had several responsibilities after school and on the weekends, but my schedule had much more free time than today.  In fact, now I rarely pick up the phone to talk to a friend.  And when I do, I usually am shuffled off to their voice mail.  They don't have any more "free time" than I do it would seem!

A couple of months ago I realized that I was losing touch with some really dear friends who live across the country because I wasn't making the time to call them.  Often we would chatter back and forth on social media, but it just isn't the same as sitting down, picking up the phone, listening, and being heard. I have now made it a part of my rule of life to call a friend once a month, and if I don't reach them to sit down and write either a handwritten note or a detailed email to them.

This little effort on my part has resulted in some really wonderful conversations with old friends.  I knew this was something my soul was really missing this past Sunday when a friend, whose voicemail I usually talked to, picked up on the second ring and tears sprang from my eyes.  Tears of joy!  Good friends are not to be taken for granted.  We have to put a little time and love into our friendships, and let our friends give us the same attention and affection.

Investing time in our friendships also extends to our friendship with God.  Lent begins this year on February 18th with Ash Wednesday. In our tradition, it is common for us to contemplate giving something up, otherwise known as fasting. An effective fast is one in which we "give up" something that takes up time in our life that might otherwise be given to God.  I encourage us this year in preparation for the fast of Lent to have the goal of wellness--body, mind, and soul.  We have devotional guides available at St. Paul's from Living Compass titled "Living Well through Lent." The devotions are intended to assist you on being well during this holy season of preparation for the passion and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Being well will mean something different for each of us.  Perhaps it will mean a commitment to calling friends you haven't talked to in a while. Perhaps this is the time to eat differently. Maybe this it the time to move more, or to sit still. Lent might be a good time to turn off the T.V. so you can sleep better at night.  Or maybe you could spend these 40 days taking that weekly date night you and your beloved keep saying you're going to do.  You will find that when you attend to your wellness as a spiritual discipline that you are much closer to the heart of God than you may have imagined.

Be well this Lent, my friends.  Love yourself, love one another, love God, and keep the fast with great devotion.

In Christ,

Rev. Stacy+

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES,
 FEBRUARY 18, 2015

  8:00 A.M. (No Music)
6:00 P.M. (Music)
with Potluck Dinner Following

"Ashes on the Go"
10:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M.
Front Lawn

Be sure to join us on Ash Wednesday. There will be an 8:00 A.M. service for those heading to work. We will again have our "Ashes on the Go" on the front lawn for those passing by. The 6:00 P.M. service (w/music) will include a Potluck Dinner in the Parish Hall following the service.

Please contact Rev. Stacy if you would like to participate in "Ashes on the Go". Lay people can impose ashes and pray for others. No experience necessary for this "out-of-the-box" experience, just a desire to take worship to the streets - or the pathways in our yard!

Join Us on February 8th as
We Welcome Our Assisting Bishop

On February 8th, Right Reverend C. Christopher Epting (Assisting Bishop in the Diocese of Chicago) will be visiting St. Paul's, accompanied by Reverend Deacon Chere Bates. There will only be one service that day at 10:30 A.M. Chelsea Coventry and Rebecca Smith with be received into the fellowship of the Episcopal Communion by the Bishop at that service.

The Schedule for February 8, 2015 will be:

9:30 AM     Coffee Hour with our Guests

9:30 AM     Sunday School

10:30 AM   Holy Eucharist with Rite of Reception (Confirmation)

11:45 AM   Potluck Luncheon

Also, Bishop Epting encourages us to invite friends to the Coffee Hour who are not members of any church as Bishop Lee proposed in his convention sermon.

"Hearing Stories, Telling Stories" is the theme of our 2014 convention and I propose a new initiative designed to get me and people of our diocese to listen to more stories, particularly from people who don't go to church.  On visitations this year, I'm asking members of vestries and bishop's committees to invite friends they may know who are not members of any church to come for coffee so I can meet with them. I want to hear from them, listen to them, ask them what might make participation in the life of the church worth their while. No strings, no tricks to get them to sign up, no sales pitch; just an openness to what we all might learn from a conversation."

Some questions to guide the discussion at the 9:30 AM Coffee Hour:

What do you value most in life?

What do you think goes on in a church?

What would make you interested in attending a church?

From the Outgoing Senior Warden,
Luke Krueger

With the winter coming, I have been out shoveling snow and laying salt. Although our plow team comes and does a great job, they usually arrive a little after seven, and Reverend Stacy arrives well before then as do some of our 8:00 AM service people, and I prefer to have main walk ways cleared and salted for their arrival. I will see if the plow team can be there earlier so all that needs be done is salting the walkways. However, I do not mind doing this, and enjoy it. I will continue to do so after my term expires.

I have contacted Marc Vassos, a consultant who was forwarded our way by the Chamber of Commerce. I plan on speaking with him to see if we can lower our energy costs as per discussion at the last vestry meeting. If this is an attempt to switch our energy supplier, I will not engage in any further discussion. Moreover, I will not make any decisions, but I will report all my findings to the vestry.

I continue to serve as a greeter for our Sunday school classes. This is truly a great joy. Maureen is fantastic with the children. Since Amy Biundo has taken a new job and will not be able to serve as the regular greeter, others of us in the parish will be needed to step in and serve as the greeter. I know the Stubblefields are already stepping up. A big thank you to Amy for her service! And thank you to the Stubblefields for stepping in as well. I'll continue to help out, and I highly encourage others to be greeters. It is exceptionally rewarding.

The Epiphany service was a HUGE success. I was able to have a little cameo as the Angel of the Lord, but the children of St. Paul's did a tremendous job! What great thespians. Julie Stubblefield, Rochelle Cripe, Peg Newby, and Rev. Stacy did wonderfully directing, stage managing, and narrating the young actors. The dinner afterwards was fantastic. Excellent fellowship. It was heartwarming to hear all the laughter amid the buzz of rollicking conversations.

Perhaps in one of my final roles as senior warden I will participate in the MLK service at 5:00 PM on January 19. I will read a section of a speech by Martin Luther King Jr. I am very much looking forward to this service, and I wish to thank Marilyn Cleland for her hard work (and this is no understatement) in helping to coordinate St. Paul's role with this celebration. Please do all you can to attend and well represent St. Paul's on the 19th.

Time got a little ahead of me, and I was unable to schedule a meeting time with Rev. Stacy to finish the signage on our property (parking lot signs and a sign noting the address for the rectory). This falls purely on me for that oversight, but we will still meet this month, and I will continue to spearhead this effort to its conclusion despite rotating off the vestry.

Finally the nominating committee has filled all the vacancies except for one vestry spot. This is not for lack of trying. Peg will address the parish on the 18th seeking to have someone step up to fill that final spot. For vestry thus far we have Rick Johns and Julie Stubblefield. For the two spots on the Endowment Committee Brad Cripe and Richard Dowen enthusiastically agreed to remain on the Endowment Committee. Henry Leonard will serve as our third delegate to convention, which again, he enthusiastically jumped at the opportunity to continue in this role. Thank you to all for agreeing to help serve our parish.

This is my last report to the vestry as senior warden, a journey that has been a little longer than expected. But it has been a great journey. There has been few things in recent memory that have given me as much joy as serving St. Paul's. This church has been so kind to Chris and I and given us so much both spiritually and in fellowship. I want to extend my deepest thanks to allow of you for the trust you have shown me in this role as senior warden. Our vestry is great. We have a myriad of personalities, but I feel all have shown deep respect to one another. I thank God for this opportunity, which in no small way has been a great blessing in this opportunity to serve. I look forward to new opportunities to serve our parish from here forward.

Thank you all and God bless.

Respectfully submitted,
Luke Krueger
Senior Warden
From the Incoming Senior Warden, Peggy Newby

hope you were able to attend our Budget and Annual Meetings in January.  Both were informative and provided an opportunity for questions and input.  If you were not able to attend, please take the time to read the reports provided for the meeting packet.  The reports relate the events of our parish, and represent a lot of work on the part of a lot of parishioners.  Thank you to all.

I am happy to serve as Sr. Warden this year.  I look forward to moving forward with projects already in progress, and helping determine direction for our future.  I cannot encourage you strongly enough to take an active role in the life of our parish.  Whether you spearhead an event or committee, attend a special service, or "just" come to church on Sunday, your presence is valuable.

As it is early in the church year, I don't have a lot to report.  I'd like to thank the returning Vestry members, as well as those who just joined us, for their commitment to St. Paul's.  Please bring any ideas, concerns, or questions to any Vestry member or Rev. Stacy.

See you on Sunday!

Treasurer's Summary, Pat Brown

December, 2014

St Paul's Episcopal Church, DeKalb, IL 60115

January 2015 Mars Hill Treasurer's Report

with December 2014 figures:

This report covers the month of December 2014.  The American Midwest Bank checking account is our primary operating account. Accounting is done by the American Midwest Bank Tax and Payroll Department. This account includes funds transferred from the Building Fund at Edward Jones to facilitate paying capital project bills. Our Building Fund major funds and the Endowment Fund are managed by Edward Jones.

Receipts through December 31, 2014

We have received 99% of the pledged amount and 103% of the total budgeted receipts by the end of the twelve month period. Operating receipts through December total $221,666. Several parishioners paid up their 2014 pledge amounts in early 2015.

Disbursements through December 31, 2014

Total operating disbursements for the twelve month period were $219,162.  The difference of receipts over disbursements for the year was $2,505. We received 103% of budgeted receipts and spent 102% of budgeted disbursements after twelve months of the year. That means we ended the year with a positive balance.

Building Fund

The balance in the Edward Jones Building Fund at the end of December was $44,158 - $30,000 in CD's and $14,158 in the Money Market Fund.  The total balance of Building funds including $6,096 in the American Midwest Bank account is $50,254.  During the year we've received contributions of $920 in the regular building fund and $550 in memorial contributions for Norma Fitzgerald. Other special contributions were $5,900.

Expenditures from the building fund were $38,225. These included tree care, rectory security system, landscaping, the rectory roof, the new sign, and rectory window and garage repairs. There is a balance from a recently matured CD in the Money Market which will provide funds for the driveway sealing slated for Spring, and more signage around the property.

Endowment Fund

The value of the Endowment Fund at the end of December was $2,041,693. The net decrease in value for the year as of December 31, 2014 was ($22,949.)  We have taken allocations of $92,000 from the Endowment for Operating expenses. This is 4.45% of the average ending monthly balance for the past year. We experienced a decrease in value in December but were able to take advantage of gains in the summer when we took funds.

Apache Stock - The 5.898 shares on deposit with the company were valued at $370 on December 31, 2014. Dividends of $5.57 were received for 2014.

On December 31, 2014 the balance in the AMB checking was $17,363.82. The Flower Fund balance was $360.90; Discretionary Fund was $333.26; Columbarium Fund was $1,464.30.  The Garden Fund has a -0- balance since the proceeds were sent to the DCCG.  Building fund portion was $6,095.81 and Operations balance was $9,109.55.  Please see Annual Report for additional 2014 financial details.

St. Paul's is so blessed to have so many talented volunteers serve in so many areas of our worship services and daily work. Everyone is an integral part of our worship and community experience.

I recently attended a three day conference at St. James Cathedral/Commons in Chicago for the Association of Anglican Musicians (AAM). "Cultivating Excellence in Liturgy, Music and Preaching"  Read below and click on the link in blue for more.

This was a conference for clergy and musicians, that explored the complex interplay between the work of the musician and the work of the clergy personBuilding upon the sermon preached by The Rt. Reverend Eugene Sutton at last summer's AAM Convention in Washington, D.C., explore in more detail his notion of a new, Anglican "three-legged stool." ...Good worship consists of its own "three legged stool": music, liturgy and preaching. Each leg of that stool is important, and if one of them is weak than the other two will not be able to stand for long. The truth is no matter how earnestly a church may pour itself into serving its community (which, as I said earlier, is a good thing), if the preaching is uninspiring, the liturgy is sloppy, or the music is barely listenable, then that church will shrink and eventually may have to close its doors as a worshiping community... Click link here to read more.

I was able to experience and enjoy Evensong (Evening Prayer) and other services, in addition to several presentations by gifted clergy and musicians that were inspiring, and also very validating and affirming for me in that St. Paul's Music Liturgy is doing very well!
