"I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth".

St. Paul's first letter to the Corinthians 3:6

Dear Friends,

This past Saturday we hosted the fourth and final affordable farmer's market in the inaugural year of the Thrive Market and Community Garden.  I have been asked many times this year if this is our first year of having a community garden. The answer is no.  This was actually the fourth year of St. Paul's growing a community garden, but it was the first year that we actively sought to cultivate community through working in the garden and offering up the fruits of our labor at the monthly markets.  As your priest, it has been interesting to watch what has grown in the garden this year-and I'm not talking about the vegetables!

Before we planted the first seeds the garden team realized we needed a mission with which to orient our efforts.  The mission of the Thrive Market and Community Garden is "Cultivating community by growing affordable local produce and sharing ideas for healthy living."  Once the mission was clarified and the seeds were planted, the call of the Holy Spirit to meet her in the garden was clear.  Meet him there we did. The initial showing up was to nurture our fledgling seedlings with water and to beat back the weeds.  The garden needed us!  And then as the fruit came to harvest we continued to show up because hungry people needed the food, and needed us to give it to them!  But while we were busy tending the garden, God was busy cultivating a blessed community among us.  The garden may have needed us, but God saw that we needed each other.  God sent to the garden not only those of us who already knew each other from the fellowship of St. Paul's, but our neighbors too.  Every week a new friend would arrive, often someone who had just arrived from a land far away: India, Nepal, Sudan, China, Mexico, and...Chicago!  I saw a community that welcomed their neighbor, invited them to work with them, delighted in their stories, and blessed them with friendship and food.  I saw the spirit of Christ Jesus in the garden, and I trust you saw him too.

For all the fruits that were offered this summer in the garden and at the markets I give thanks the most for the relationships that were nurtured and grown.  I'm carrying the lessons I've learned in the garden and market into other areas of my life.  I'm looking for those places where God is inviting us to cultivate community.  Continuing to nurture interfaith friendships is a garden that is really beginning to flourish at Northern Illinois University (NIU) as that institution increasingly becomes known as a leader among public universities in the United States in conversations in the area of interfaith diversity.  Part of the reason NIU is flourishing in this area is because of the conversations people of faith have already been having in DeKalb.  And the voices of St. Paul's are acknowledged as a positive contribution in that conversation.  I'm now part of an interfaith committee at NIU because I hung around "the garden" where those conversations were happening.  Now God has me working in that garden. Only time will tell what the harvest will be.   God calls each of us to meet him in the garden.  I pray you will find your way to the garden and be blessed by the friendship of the other laborers you meet there.

Your fellow companion on the Way,

Notice Anything New in Our Front Yard?

In early September our new yard sign arrived.  Now those driving by can easily identify who we are and where we are located--day and night!  Guests who have heard about us through social media or through friends can now also find St. Paul's easily as well.  Contributions and memorials made over many years to the Building Fund made the purchase of this new sign possible.

Thanks be to God for your gifts to the mission and ministry of St. Paul's!
From the Senior Warden, Luke Krueger

September marks one year since I first attended the vestry in the service of the office of Senior Warden. One year goes by quickly.

As to church business, you have all noticed the new sign. I can confidently say that if it has not brought in more parishioners, we are more visible. A colleague of mine at work, who did not know I went to St. Paul's, until I mentioned it two weeks ago, didn't know where our church was. When I told him, he said, "That's the church that got the new sign!" We're at least more visible. We are speaking with Mr. Flores, who has returned from Florida, to see if there is any landscaping or some such thing that will beautify the base. The sign was looked at by Vic Reed, and has been shining bright in the night.

Theisen has not called to confirm when they will come to do the rectory roof, but as I mentioned in my last report, we are on their schedule and they will be here in October.

Royer finally got back to me. They don't simply do resealing but Rick Ball did send me two companies he likes to work with for paving. Their bids were the previous ones that had been submitted with a full repaving, which were just above or below, $5,000.

We do have our permit for the shed. I will keep consulting with Rhys as to how we should proceed, but I know he has been busy lately with his parents and I do not want to overburden him. I hope that Rick Johns and I along with Rhys' consultation can have it up on our grounds by November.

The drain on the roof that was plugged long before I came on vestry is now clear. The drain is on the south side of the sanctuary near the breezeway. As my predecessors, Dave Anderson and Mike Duffy had told me, a plumber had suggest tearing out the wall in the sanctuary to access the pipe, cut it, and replace it. After carefully checking the various ends of the drain, we cut into the bottom of the pipe, removed a portion of it, and stuck an iron rod up into the pipe, and cleared out a great deal of gunk. A plug is currently on the drain, and we will replace the cut pipe shortly. Much thank to Rhys, Collin, and Jocelyn Prall, and Rick Johns. The carpet did get a little dirty, and Rhys and Jocelyn used a carpet cleaner to get much of it cleansed. On September 4, after our cookout for the Theatre Dept., I came by with resolve and did deep spot cleaning. It looks in good shape, although once we get the pipe replaced, we'll have a professional come in and clean it up.

We had the carpets cleaned early in September. I was able to come by and put the tables and chairs back in the Parish Hall. Much thanks to Rev. Rich for moving them out before the carpet guys arrived.

The refrigerator in the basement, which no longer worked, was taken to dumpster and picked up by 1800GotJunk.

I was able to make many garden nights to help pick vegetables over many nights. It's a blast, and probably the most relaxing moment I get all week.

After a theatre department cookout, I realized I had overbought in terms of buns, hamburgers, and hotdogs. The buns were donated to the Salvation Army. The hamburgers and hot dogs, were stored at the church and donated to members this past Sunday.

I am excited for the Diocesan Convention in November. Resolutions were to be submitted this past Monday (September 15, 2014). The resolutions, reports, and nominations for various elected positions will be available at:

http://www.episcopalchicago.org. I strongly encourage everyone to read over these and offer St. Paul's delegates your position/opinion. The delegates are: Luke Krueger, Peg Newby, and Henry Leonard.

Finally, I will be participating in Crop Walk this year in support of Henry and Eva Leonard's team. I do have a page on the www.hunger.cwsglobal.org site.

People may donate there. My goal was to raise $200. At present I have raised $250.

I remember St. Chrysostm's words, "you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them." Yes, I have quoted this prayer before, but the prayer itself brings me great comfort. I say it at the end of the daily office in the evening. St. Paul's is a wonderful home, and if I am away, I take great comfort in knowing we are gathered, always, together. Thank you all for allowing me to serve St. Paul's over the past year. A few more months to bring it home.

Respectfully submitted,

Luke Krueger

Our Mission & Vision Statements:  We pray that our hearts may be opened to seek the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to be the church and the Christians that God is calling us to be.  We are called to gather around the sacred story and table of Christ where all are invited to be fed and everyone's story matters.

We are well into our new program year.  What have you signed up to do this year?  Can you assist/serve during a worship service?  Can you host a fellowship event?  Can you be a greeter for the Sunday School classes?   Can you host a coffee hour?  Be on Flower Guild or Altar Guild?  In September, we had sign-up sheets available so parishioners could see their options.  Thank you to everyone who signed up for a new role, as well as to those who will continue on in theirs.  Don't think that just because the sheets are gone the opportunities are not available!  You can volunteer or agree to serve any time.  If you would like more information on what a particular role entails, just ask someone who does it, or a member of the Vestry. Training and assistance are available for all roles, so please step forward and take an active role in our parish.

Because it is "the season," the Stewardship and Nominating Committees are making plans.  Mary Lincoln and I will be spearheading Stewardship.  The Nominating Committee is being finalized.  Both of these committees have the task of asking parishioners for their participation.  I ask your prayers for these committees as they move forward in October and November.

And finally, thank you to everyone who contributed to our special collection for the Diocesan campaign "Places of Grace and Gladness."  The collection received at our picnic in August totaled $536!

See you on Sunday!

The Adult/Youth Choir sounds fantastic! Come and sing with us! If you are unable to join in on Thursday evening choir rehearsals 7-9 PM, no problem, we run-thru the anthem right before the Sunday morning service at 10 AM, so just come and join us on Sunday mornings! The Choir sings for the 10:30 AM worship service.

The Children's Choir rehearses on Thursday afternoons from 5:00-5:30 PM. All children (Ages 3-12) are welcome to participate! We will be scheduling different repertoire (songs) for challenging the broad age ranges. Additionally, the children will have more opportunities to sing alongside of the Adult/Youth Choir this year, to broaden their musical training and worship experiences. They sound awesome!

Welcome Huixin Chen, Pianist! Huixin is our 2014-3015 accompanist. Huixin is from Guangzhou, China. Her father is a water collector for the Guangzhou Running-water Company and her mother is a kindergarten teacher. Huixin is working on my master's degree in Piano Performance at NIU. In addition to her work at St. Paul's, she is an accompanist for the University Chorus at NIU. Upon completion of her studies here, she plans on opening her own studio to teach piano in Guangzhou. Huixin enjoys traveling, cooking and watching movies.

Note for your calendar! Huixin will be performing in recital on Sunday, November 09, 2014, 7:00 P.M., Boutell Memorial Concert Hall, NIU Music Building.
____________________________________________________________________

Good bye, to several gifted musicians!

Thank you so very much, Michael Ouellette and Michael & Kristin Duffy,
for sharing your time, talent & spirit! You have added so much to the music for our worship services at St. Paul's as well as in the NIU and DeKalb, Sycamore communities,
and you will be greatly missed! I am very sad to have you go and yet excited, as well as happy for you as you pursue new musical and life adventures. Very best wishes from all of us at St. Paul's!

Michael Ouellette, Clarinetist. You may have noticed that Michael is not around too much these days. Michael was accepted into The Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, where he is continuing his BA degree in music, with Clarinet as his major instrument.

He is so excited and already blowing a few reeds down Michigan Avenue. His mom (Sue) shared that "he is working hard and living his dream." I look forward to hearing more of his musical adventures and hope he keeps us tuned into his upcoming performances, so that we may attend, and support his career.

duffy trumpet

Michael and Kristin Duffy. It has been such a gift and honor to conduct and also sing with Michael and Kristin! Personally and professionally, I will miss working with such exceptional artists and persons. Michael's trumpet and Kristin's oboe playing have enhanced many services over the past eight years at St. Paul's.

Michael Duffy, Trumpet. I have found Michael's technical facility and warm brilliant sound on the trumpet to be on a par with the great classical trumpet players in our major symphonies around the country. Definitely, a gift and honor for me, was the opportunity to work on and perform the soprano & trumpet classics such as J.S. Bach's "Jauchzet Gott in alle Landen" and G. F. Händel's Let the Bright Seraphim" with him. The St. Paul's Choirs and congregation have been lifted by his spirited sounds on many hymns and anthems. You will be able to hear him perform on several anthems and a hymn, with the St. Paul's Choir, on the soon to be Choral CD recorded this past May. Michael has also shared many other talents with us at St. Paul's. He served on the vestry for several years and also as Sr. Warden.

After serving as Music Librarian since 2002 and also Head of Branch Libraries, Michael Duffy will leave Northern Illinois University on October 3, to begin his appointment to the position of Performing Arts Librarian at Western Michigan University. How cool is it that Michael has M. Music in musicology from Northwestern University, Master of Library and Information Science from Dominican University, Bachelor of Music in music education from Western Michigan University, and he is now heading back to WMU!

Kristin Duffy, Oboe. Another one of my favorite musical memories of Kristin playing the Oboe at St. Paul's was for a Lenten service when she accompanied the choir on the beautiful anthem titled "And No Bird Sang" by Douglas Wagner. Kristin has such an incredibly beautiful quality in her oboe sound. It was truly a gift and blessing to have Kristin play for and enhance many of our worship services. How awesome to have the sound of the oboe!!

Kristin has also shared with us at St. Paul's many other gifts! She has been on the Flower Guild for many years. Additionally, She was very instrumental and active on the rector search committeeKristin is a Contracts and Industry Relations Coordinator, in the Office of Sponsored Projects at Northern Illinois University.  Kristin holds a B. A. in History from Hope College and M. A. in Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program (SUNY Oneonta).

Additionally, a huge thank you to Nora & Charlie!

Your contributions to St. Paul's are very much appreciated and will be missed!

Nora, your acolyte work, and also having you and Charlie occasionally sing with the Children's Choir, ring the Sanctus Bells and then make grand appearances in our Christmas Eve Godly Play Pageant, are among many wonderful moments, very much appreciated and will also be missed!

Thank You, Duffy Family!

Sign up names of the beloved everyday saints in your life who have gone on to glory (who are deceased) by October 26th on the list in the Parish Hall or via email to the Parish Office.
