News from St. Paul's Episcopal Church                                  August 2014

September 2014

Dear Friends,

Greg Garrett,

a classmate of mine from the Seminary of the Southwest, has written a number of books about leaving the fundamentalist Christian faith of his childhood and searching for an authentic spiritual life during his early years of adulthood.  Eventually Greg found his way back to Christianity after discovering what he calls "the other Jesus"-the Jesus of love and compassion.  In his book The Other Jesus: Rejecting a Religion of Fear for the God of Love, Greg shares a story from the time he was still quite suspicious of Christians.  Greg is also a professor of English at Baylor University. One day several years ago the university had as their guest poet Maya Angelou.  Dr. Angelou had just finished teaching in Greg's classroom when he approached her to thank her for her work as a poet and for being their guest lecturer.  After the customary compliments Garrett added, "And to think, you are a Christian."  Dr. Angelou smiled and handled his awkward comment with consummate grace saying, "Oh honey, I'm not a Christian.  I'm trying to be a Christian."

What do we mean when we say we are Christians?  We are saying we are followers of Christ, but God help us if by what we mean by that is that we are "perfect".  Who wants to be perfect anyway? Perfect people are perfectly annoying.  But a person who is trying their best to follow Christ-that's authentic.  A community of people trying to be Christians is the sort of community to which people want to belong.  You might even say it's a "Place of Grace and Gladness".  That's the name of the campaign to fund new ministries in the Diocese of Chicago which we just participated in at our annual picnic on Sunday, August 26th.  I said in my homily at the picnic that what makes a church a place of grace and gladness is not the building or the outer trappings, it's the people.  People who are willing to admit they are trying to be Christians.  Sometimes we proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ well at St. Paul's.  And sometimes we do not.  But I for one am grateful for not only St. Paul's but also the Episcopal Church and specifically the Diocese of Chicago.  In this Church when we fall down, others help us get up, dust ourselves off, and try again to follow Jesus-to be the Christians the world needs.

The world is a broken place. And yet, it is a beautiful place.  It's worth saving.  That's the good news of God in Jesus Christ.  Brother James Koester of the Society of St. John the Evangelist writes, "If we are serious about what we say, then we need to be just as serious about what we do. If we truly believe we have been called, justified and glorified by God and that thru baptism we share in the life and work of God then not only what we believe matters, but what we do matters as well."   In a place of grace and gladness we confess that we believe in Jesus, and then we join him in the work of spreading his love all over the place.  And we pray that we do so with the humility and authenticity of people who are trying to be Christians, admitting sometimes we don't quite do what Jesus would, but are willing to give it another go anyway.

Your fellow traveler on the Way of Jesus,

Rev. Stacy+

Outdoor Service and Parish Picnic

Thunderstorms stayed away and a light breeze kept it pleasant. And members were inspired to offer $536.00 for the Places of Grace and Gladness - a campaign for funding ministries in the Diocese of Chicago. God is good!

From the Senior Warden, Luke Krueger

I returned from five and a half weeks away to run the Vermont Summer Academy. Thank you to all the St. Paul's folks who sent positive affirming E-mails. It was a rough go this year.

I returned to DeKalb late on Tuesday night, August 12. Chris and I took Wednesday to spend together. Thursday we did prep work for the DeKalb County Animal Shelter's bake sale at the Threshing Bee. We also attended Peg Newby's father's visitation. Friday, all day at the Threshing Bee selling baked goods for the Animal Shelter.

I can't say I have a great deal to offer as regards updates, thus my report will be brief.

The capital needs improvements:

  • The new sign will be delivered this month and installed by Paldo signs.
  • The permit was approved, and I will pick it up on Monday.
  • Jeff Theisen spoke with me today. They do have the contract we signed and     we are on their list for October to replace the rectory roof.
  • Royer is proving exceptionally difficult to get a hold of. At this point, it might   not be feasible to get the lot resealed this year. I will pursue to make sure we   are first on the list next year.

I would like us to take names for the nominating committee so we can have that assembled this month.

Thank you all for your help and support.

Respectfully submitted,

Luke Krueger

Mars Hill Proclaimer Treasurer's Report with July 2014 figures:

This report covers the month of July 2014.  The American Midwest Bank checking account is our primary operating account. Accounting is done by the American Midwest Bank Tax and Payroll Department. This account includes funds transferred from the Building Fund at Edward Jones to facilitate paying capital project bills. Our Building Fund major funds and the Endowment Fund are managed by Edward Jones.

Receipts through July 31, 2014

We have received 69% of the pledged amount and 51% of the total budgeted receipts by the end of the seven month period. Total operating receipts through July 2014 were $110,256. An allocation of $30,000 was transferred from the Endowment Fund to operations checking in early April 2014. The second week in August $55,000 was transferred into the operations account after I conferred with Matt Myre at Edward Jones. He recommended we take out as much as we will need until the end of the year. This will appear in the August 31, report. It is within the Budgeted amount for the year.

Disbursements through July 31, 2014

Total operating disbursements for the seven month period were $135,709. That is 63% of the total allocated. The difference of disbursements over receipts is ($25,452) for the year. We've received 52% of budgeted receipts and spent 63% of budgeted disbursements. This difference will be positive after the Endowment Fund transfer.

Building Fund

The balance in the Edward Jones Building Fund at the end of July was $53,802. It consists of $50,000 in CD's and $3,802 in the Money Market Fund.  The total balance of Building funds is $73,445. The Building Fund balance in Regular checking should be $19,643. We received contributions of $85 for the building fund. There are enough funds in the Building Fund to fund the capital improvements planned for the year and have a cushion.

Endowment Fund

The value of the Endowment Fund at the end of July was $2,118,981. The net increase in value for the year as of June 30, 2014 was $54,341.  We took an allocation of $30,000 from the Endowment for Operating expenses and took another $55,000 in August. See Receipts above for recent disbursement information.

#Prayers2Pass Welcome Week 2014

It gets better every time we do this!

For the second year in a row St. Paul's offered a NIU Welcome Week edition of Prayers2Pass on Tuesday August 26th and Wednesday, August 27th.  The event took place at two locations in our yard where dozens of students walk through each day on their way to and from class.  We handed out several hundred bottles of water and rolls of Mentos with prayer labels attached that are "tweet" length.  Here's an example: "Jesus: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' Mark 12:31 Consider yourself loved :) #prayers2pass ".  We also took prayer requests from students on the spot and invited them to write their prayers on prayer walls or place an anonymous prayer in the "Secret Prayers" box--that's for prayers that are just for that person and God to know about. Prayers from the prayer walls ranged from personal concerns, to intercessions to have a healthy and productive semester, to praying for the concerns of the wider world such as for world peace and for change for the better in Gaza.  We will include these prayer wall intercessions in the Prayers of the People on Sunday mornings beginning on August 31st and continuing throughout the month of September.  The prayer walls and "Secret Prayers" boxes will also be on display in our sanctuary throughout September.  You are welcome to add prayers to the prayer walls and prayer boxes as well. You are also encouraged to take your Sunday bulletin home and include these prayers2pass intercessions in your daily devotions.

Perhaps the most interesting thing to come out of this event is the friendships that are begun with the simple offer of a free bottle of water and a smile.  We witnessed not only friendship begun between St. Paul's and our neighbors, but also between the students themselves.  One young man from Minneapolis met a young man who just arrived here from India at our table. As it turns out the Indian student has a sister in Minneapolis, so the American student said, "Let's share phone numbers so we can carpool sometime!"  I can't imagine this conversation would have happened anywhere else between two students from vastly differently disciplines and different cultures.  That's what being the church is all about: making a space for everyone to experience the hospitality of God's love.   A big thank you to all our Welcome Week 2014 Prayers2Pass team members who helped make positive encounters such as these happen: Jane DeGolier, Gretchen Schlabach, Chris Krueger, Rosemarie Ostberg, Terry Dickow, James Stubblefield (for scheduling the tweets and updating the website

www.prayers2pass.com), Rich Frontjes (for help setting up and tearing down on Tuesday), Oscar Frontjes and Rowan Frontjes (for hauling water, sticking labels on Mentos, and greeting students on Tuesday), Rev. Stacy, and Susan King (for deciphering the prayer walls for our Sunday intercessions).

Thrive Neighborhood Market and Community Garden

It has been a wonderful summer of gardening and Thriving!  We have had so much fun tending the garden each Tuesday night and the markets have been a wonderful time to meet our neighbors and strengthen our already existing friendships.  We are still harvesting tomatoes, peppers of all kinds, tomatillos, herbs, broccoli and cabbage.  We have planted some more fall crops such as beets, radishes and more fresh greens.

There is still time to be involved in the garden and Thrive Market!  Please join us in the garden any Tuesday night from 6:30-7:30 to harvest and continue to battle weeds.  Our last market date is set for September 27th.  Harvesting starts at 9:30 and then we set up and open up at 11am.  We stay open until 2pm and whatever is left over is taken home by t he volunteers and the rest is donated to a local shelter or food bank.  Everything is on a pay-as-you-can basis with no set price on anything to ensure that everyone can enjoy the bounty that God provides.

We are also working on a project that will showcase our garden and market for the whole diocese so if you wouldn't mind having your picture taken or saying a few words about what helping with the garden means to you, please let me know!  We'd love to have as much participation as possible.
If you have any questions or want to know more, please contact me: chriskrueger14@gmail.com or 570-460-3731.
