I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord!" Psalm 122:1 (NRSV)

Dear Friends,

Several years ago Rich and I learned a chant of Psalm 122 that has become a part of our family's repertoire of ditties:  I was glad when I heard them say, 'Let us go to the house of the Lord!' We sing it whenever the mood strikes us, but particularly anytime we prepare to go and worship at St. Paul's.

All summer I have had the joy of working with four young acolytes, all age eight or younger.  They have embodied this refrain from Psalm 122 with their enthusiasm to serve at the altar of Our Lord.  Their smiles and "I-can-do-it" attitude sing out: I was glad when I heard them say, 'Let us go to the house of the Lord!'  The devoted service of these sweet children is a blessing to all who are present as many of you have told me, and have told them as well to encourage them in their ministry as acolytes.

Summer can be a rather slow time around the parish.  Many people are traveling and taking advantage of the summer weather to take day trips with friends and families.  We have been so very blessed by a cool and comfortable summer this year, which makes a difference in this un-air-conditioned house of the Lord.

It really is a joy to worship at St. Paul's in a summer such as this.  I encourage you to make a Sunday morning at St. Paul's part of your plans these last few precious days of summer.  And if Sunday doesn't work, come by the garden on a Tuesday night from 6:30 to 7:30P.M.  Or, come help out and/or visit at the Thrive Neighborhood Market on Saturday, August 23rd. Or come and welcome back students at Prayers2Pass on August 26&27. Come and be refreshed. Come and rejoice.  Come and give thanks for all the blessings you have received in your life through our Lord Jesus Christ. Come and let your heart sing:  I was glad when I heard them say, 'Let us go to the house of the Lord.'

In Christ,

Rev. Stacy+

Update on Capital Improvements Needs:

At our annual meeting this year, we learned that a committee would be formed to look at our capital improvement needs, and the possibility of conducting a capital campaign.  Luke Krueger and the Building and Grounds committee, along with Rev. Stacy, has done much work to determine appropriate responses to these needs.  The projects looked at included the Rectory roof, parking lot repairs, and new signage for our property.  After reviewing the costs involved, the Vestry agreed that no capital campaign is needed at this time.  We have sufficient funds in our building fund to cover these expenses, and leave ourselves a buffer/emergency fund for major events that could lead to our inability to conduct worship services.  For future capital improvements, we will likely need to conduct a campaign and request pledges from parishioners to assist in the ongoing support of our building and grounds.  Thank you to parishioners past and present for their ongoing support of St. Paul's.

Places of Grace and Gladness Offering:

During our Parish Picnic on August 24th, we will be asked to contribute to a special one-time offering to support the Campaign for St. James Commons.  The renovation of the Commons is complete, and gifts to the Campaign will replenish diocesan assets from which Bishop Lee and his staff fund congregational projects for new and revitalizing ministries.  To better understand this Campaign, a DVD provided by the diocese will be available for viewing in Parish Hall after both services on August 17th.  You can view the DVD online at http://www.episcopalchicago.org/ppour-diocese/campaign.

I would remind you again of our Vision and Mission Statements.  We pray that our hearts may be opened to seek the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to be the church and the Christians that God is calling us to be.  We are called to gather around the sacred story and table of Christ where all are invited to be fed and everyone's story matters.  Please prayerfully consider what you can do to help our church family meet our goals as described in these two statements.  Everyone is needed and important!

See you on Sunday!

July 2014

Mars Hill Proclaimer Treasurer's Report with May and June 2014 figures:

This report covers the months of May and June 2014.  The American Midwest Bank checking account is our primary operating account. Accounting is done by the American Midwest Bank Tax and Payroll Department. This account includes funds transferred from the Building Fund at Edward Jones to facilitate paying capital project bills. Our Building Fund major funds and the Endowment Fund are managed by Edward Jones.

Receipts through June 30, 2014

We have received 63% of the pledged amount and 48% of the total budgeted receipts by the end of the six month (half year) period. Total operating receipts through June 2014 were $103,054. An allocation of $30,000 was transferred from the endowment fund to checking in early April 2014. Another $30,000 will need to be transferred at the beginning of August.

Disbursements through June 30, 2014

Total operating disbursements for the six month period were $119,410. That is 56% of the total allocated. The difference of disbursements over receipts is ($19,600) for the two months and ($16,355) for the year. We've received 48% of budgeted receipts and spent  56% of budgeted disbursements.

Building Fund

The balance in the Edward Jones Building Fund at the end of June was $63,777 - $50,000 in CD's and $13,777 in the Money Market Fund.  The total balance of Building funds is $73,335. The Building Fund balance in Regular checking should be $9,558. We received contributions of $150 in the regular building fund. The donation of $5,800 for new trees and shrubs was used for that purpose. There are enough funds in the building fund to fund the capital improvements planned for the year and have a cushion available.

Endowment Fund

The value of the Endowment Fund at the end of June was $2,116,397. The net increase in value for the year as of June 30, 2014 was $51,757.  We took an allocation of $30,000 from the Endowment for Operating expenses and will take another $30,000 in August.

Apache Stock - The 5.863 shares on deposit with the company were valued at $547 on  June 30, 2014.

On June 30, 2014 the Flower Fund balance was ($12.31), Discretionary Fund was $1,263.13, and Columbarium Fund was $1,471.80.  The Garden Fund has a $144.10 balance to be sent to the Community Gardens with the amount collected in July.

Respectfully submitted,

Pat Brown, Treasurer, July 20, 2014

We would love to have you join us in making joyful sounds, celebrating the Eucharist on the beautiful grounds of St. Paul's. Don't be bashful! Please let Lorraine or any choir member know if you are interested and could use just a little encouragement to join us :)

Our Godly Play children's Sunday School rooms need some new stories to grow with our children's sense of wonder.  If you enjoy painting, sewing, putting things together, or just being creative in general then we invite you to put your gifts to work with others in crafting some new Godly Play stories. We will meet on Saturday, August 9th in the Parish Hall starting at 9:30A.M. to work on crafting together some new stories from scripture and the traditions of the Church.  We are also looking for some handy men and women to assemble three bookcases to hold the new stories in the classrooms. We will finish our work by noon with lunch.  Please bring your favorite brown bag lunch.  RSVP to Maureen Gerrity  by August 3rd. For more information about Godly Play go to www.godlyplay.org

August  Food Pantry Report and Reminders

Thanks to all parishioners who contributed to Food Pantry Sunday in July.

A smaller donation than usual was made by parishioners for Food Pantry Sunday on July 13. The donation of 72 food items was, however, supplemented with three bags of fresh produce from the church garden. The total number of donations year-to-date is 1818.

The demand on the food pantry continues and is even greater during summer months when children no longer receive free lunches at school. Some lunch items would be helpful, such as jelly (no glass bottles, please).

As a reminder, the pantry no longer needs egg cartons, but can always use plastic bags.

The next food pantry collections will be on Sunday, August 10.  Please try to contibute, even if it is just a can or two of vegetables or fruit. Thanks to all whose donations helped to make this a successful ministry.                                                                                                                              Pat and Vince McMahon
