News from St. Paul's Episcopal Church Contents                           June/July 2014
Dear Friends,

In my laundry this weekend I had sweaters, tights, shorts, and beach towels.  It was a pleasant reminder to me that summer had finally arrived in its usual fashion.  Which is to say one day it was cold and dreary, and the next day called for sunscreen!  Pentecost (June 8th, 2014) arrives at the end of a long and yet joyful season of Easter.  Just as we've gotten comfortable talking about Jesus and the resurrection week after week we suddenly find ourselves confronted with the Holy Comforter.  And like summer, we are glad to see Her/Him, if not a little bit bewildered. We say, "Come, Holy Spirit, come",but then what do we do when the Advocate arrives?

Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to his first disciples so that they might become a new creation: the Church-his presence still in the world through the witness and proclamation of the community of believers. One old song-prayer that calls for the presence of the Holy Spirit says: "Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful and kindle in us the fire of your Love.  Send forth your Spirit and we shall be created and you shall renew the face of the earth."    Re-creation is really what we are asking for when we call upon the Holy Spirit. Renewal, yes.  But also play! Play in our hearts, Holy Spirit, and inspire us to renew the world around us through your grace and love.

So, how will you play with the Holy Spirit this summer?  Where do you long for some re-creation? I'm planning on wearing my gardening clothes as much as possible: pulling weeds, watering, picking the fruits of our labor and giving them away.  I'm going to see how many new friends I can make in our neighborhood by talking about the Thrive Market and inviting volunteers every chance I get!

The Holy Spirit has arrived, and the season of intentional play in His/Her name is once again in full swing.  Play well, pray well, be open to re-creation and to the renewal of the corner of Creation where God has planted you.  As always, you will be in my prayers.

In the name of the Blessed Trinity,

Rev. Stacy

Another Lobster Boil passed. What a great success, in no small part due to the efforts of Rick Johns. To understand what Rick did, let me take you back a few years.

It was 2011, and my wife Christina and I had only been at St. Paul's for a few weeks. When we learned of the opportunity to be a part of the Lobster Boil, we jumped in head first. When we arrived, everything had been set up and we were waiting for live lobster delivery to begin. During this lull, I noticed Rick lounging on the grass with his notebook. I had not yet met Rick, and I thought, "Oh, he must be an artist." I asked him if he was sketching people as we awaited the rush. Rick, in his resonant voice said, "Aw...no, I'm just taking notes on how everything is set up and runs. You know, at some point, someone else will have to run this. It's so well run, and operates pretty smoothly. I just don't want us to lose that."

That was three years ago. Rick had that foresight. I don't think Rick envisioned himself running the whole shebang, but when it came time for him to fill the void of making the Lobster Boil run, he was ready. He had detailed, to scale, diagrams from his computer ready to go. When it came time for set up, my guests (parents and my friend Ryan) knew exactly what to do having despite never having attended before. It is this foresight that I am amazed by. An awareness that although the need wasn't immediate, it was looming.

And that's what I'm thinking about today. I echo Peg Newby's article. We are half-way through our calendar year, but I am already thinking of wrapping up my time on the vestry. To be sure I have much to do, and many months remain on my term, but soon I will be done. I have relished that time. I honestly enjoy doing the weekly counts of our collection. I like taking every third Sunday to attend to church matters. In short, I'm not looking forward to having my time back.

I'm already contemplating what my next role for the church can be once my term ends. (Right now, teaching Sunday school has the edge.) I urge everyone to consider what you wish to do, in a new phase of St. Paul's history. We will have three departures from the vestry in January, we will need a new clerk, and someone to represent buildings and grounds.

Perhaps you are the Cincinnatus type, one who does not seek to serve but will when asked. I'm like that. But as we move towards January, consider Rick. We should all take a moment, lounge in the grass at St. Paul's and wonder, not what more can you do (because a lot of people are doing so much already), but what will be your new role as the year and years role on; to make sure St. Paul's sustains what makes us wonderful, and creates new and innovative ideas for our congregation and our community.

Luke Krueger, Senior Warden

From the Junior Warden, Peg Newby

I continue learning the workings of our church, as I attend Vestry and other meetings.  I have been active in several aspects of parish life, but it is amazing what goes on behind the scenes to keep our programs and fellowship going.

This takes the work of a dedicated parish.  Each and every one of us plays an important role in carrying out our Vision Statement:  We pray that our hearts may be opened to seek the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to be the church and the Christians that God is calling us to be.  This statement is on the front of our weekly service bulletins, along with our Mission Statement: We are called to gather around the sacred story and table of Christ where all are invited to be fed and everyone's story matters.

If we read these Statements regularly, and do what is in our hearts to fulfill our Mission and Vision, we will be more than prepared to accept challenges, perform services, and participate in the life and worship of our church family.

We are only halfway through the calendar year, but it is not too soon to be thinking about leadership needs for 2015.  I hope you will prayerfully consider how you might be involved in our remaining events for 2014, and what role you are called to play in the next year.  And as I have said before, regular attendance at worship is important, to hear the sacred story and be fed, and share fellowship with our church family.

See you on Sunday!

The Adult/Youth and Children's Choirs are off for the summer. You will see many of us through out
the summer worshiping along side of you, sitting next to you in the pews. We hope that you will help lead the services in song. If you like, you can even grab a bell and ring it through out the Gloria and after the Sanctus.

The Adult/Youth Choir has made its first recording! Wow, they sound fantastic! More information will be forthcoming. In the future, we hope to have another recording session (1 Saturday Recording Session) that would include the Children's Choir.

We hope that we will be able to give away the CD's as gifts to family and friends, in addition to being tokens of gratitude to people that donate financially to the St. Paul's music program.

Hello from our new Administrative Assistant, Susan King

Dear Family of St. Paul's,

I am delighted to begin working with the staff and members of St. Paul!

My husband Mike and I owned a recording studio in Chicago for many years, but when Mike retired in 2008 and the business was sold, I began working at a tutoring company in Barrington as manager and tutored for the ACT test. I also helped as Administrative Assistant at St. Paul UCC church in Barrington.

Looking for a life without stairs, last year we moved to a ranch house in Genoa and are happily settling in to the Dekalb community. Mike still runs the sound for the praise band at Hope Lutheran in Buffalo Grove and I frequently act as lector for services there. We try to keep up with seven grown daughters, ten grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Best,

The service will include music, readings, a short homily and communion.  If you would like to be involved in this important outreach of our parish as Lector or Euchararistic Minister, please contact the Parish Office or Rev. Supporting Marriage Equality

The Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago wishes to express its strong support as the State of Illinois officially begins celebrating same sex marriages on June 1. As a Christian denomination that recognizes the importance of scripture, tradition and reason, we believe in a God who commanded us to "love one another as I have loved you." As Christians, our understanding of homosexuality has evolved along with our understanding of marriage.

Read the Standing Committee's entire statement and all of Bishop Lee's past letters on marriage equality.

Did you know that St. Paul's is ready to celebrate ALL marriages? Check out our website wedding page and share with your family and friends!  (photo of Becki and Marje, friends of Lorraine and Gretchen) All are Welcome! No Exceptions!

Volunteer to Work with the NIU Regional History Center
With Rosemarie Ostberg

A few years ago, St. Paul's received a letter from the Regional History Center at Northern Illinois University mentioning that we had not sent them anything (archival) for a long time. I decided that I could do this and have been providing material to them, with some help from Jennie Cummings, since then. This last year I have collected many things, like pictures, newspaper articles, the Proclaimer, bulletins, and records of our births, deaths, and marriages. I did that this last year for a baseline of possible contributions to the Center, which is now a regular part of the NIU Library. In the future, I will only collect bulletins from holidays or special occasions, the Proclaimers, new articles, as well as facts about our Parish. Reverend Stacy suggested that I ask for
a volunteer to learn what I do so that they could take this position or teach someone else to do it. If anyone is interested, please contact me, Rosemarie Ostberg, at 815-758-5216.
Thanks to everyone for their donations to the 2014 United Thank Offering

Our parish donation of $294.71 was presented at the April Episcopal Church Women (ECW) conference in Chicago.  This year, we told the UTO story to the children in Sunday School and to parishioners at Sunday services.  We offered a chance to name our thanks and post them for all to see.  And, of course, we dropped coins in the blue boxes we have in our homes, as we privately named our thanks.

Thank you to all who participated this year.  Please see me if you would like a blue box to begin next year's donation now.  Give thanks daily!

Peg Newby, chair, UTO
May  Food Pantry Report and Reminders

Thanks to all parishioners who contributed to Food Pantry Sunday in May. Donations totaled 180 items, 81 in food and 99 diapers. YTD donations total 1474 items.

As a reminder, school will be out during the summer so students will not be able to depend on school lunches for food. Some lunch items would be helpful, such as jelly (no glass bottles, please).

Michael and Alicia Cho, Salvation Army Captains are moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota to a new posting.  A farewell reception will be held on Wednesday, June 11th 6:00P.M. at the Salvation Army, 8th & Grove in DeKalb.  No need to rsvp.

Thanks to all whose donations helped make this a successful ministry.

The next food pantry collections will be on Sunday, June 8th and July 13th. Thanks.
