News from St. Paul's Episcopal Church              Contents          October 2013

Dear Friends

On October 6th we will welcome as our special guest our bishop, The Rt. Rev. Jeffrey D. Lee, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago (aka Bishop Lee, Bishop Jeff, or Jeff).  If you are new to the Episcopal Church, or even if you are not, you may be wondering what's the big deal? Good question!

Bishops play a historical role in the liturgy of the Church.  (Liturgy is a church word from the words laos (people) and ergos (work)--literally translated "the work of the people".  Popularly understood to refer to the rites of worship and prayer.)  In the early Church (think right after Jesus ascended into heaven), the apostles were the first bishops.  They preached, baptized, and prayed for the healing of the sick.  However, fairly early in the life of the Church it was realized that the apostles (bishops) couldn't do all of this by themselves, particularly caring for widows, orphans, and the sick.  In the book of the Acts of the Apostles in the sixth chapter seven believers are selected to be deacons  to wait at the table in service of the people in a direct care sort of way.  Before chapter six is complete one of the seven, Stephen, is arrested for his Christian witness and in short order becomes the first Christian martyr.  Deacons have been out in the world taking care of people and calling for justice for the poor and oppressed ever since. Bishop Lee is often accompanied by a deacon to symbolize liturgically the relationship between the ministries of bishop and deacon.

The priesthood as we know it today, evolved as the church grew. Soon there were simply too many new converts to be attended to by the bishops of each region. Presbyters (priests) were ordained by bishops to baptize in their stead and also to preside over the sacrament of Holy Communion. Bishops would visit the churches in their diocese (geographical area of churches) periodically to provide administrative oversight, pastoral care to the presbyters, deacons, and laity (the people), and to confirm baptisms that had occurred in their absence with the laying on of hands. The word "episcopal" means "over sight". The Episcopal Church therefore is a Church over seen by bishops.

Today, the presence of the bishop at our liturgy symbolizes the unity we have in the Body of Christ with the churches of our diocese, of the churches of the Episcopal Church, and of the churches of the Anglican communion as a whole. Bishop Lee will also lay hands and say the prayers of intercession for the Holy Spirit to empower the baptized who have been preparing for confirmation (confirmands) for service and to sustain them for their whole life (Book of Common Prayer 310).

Bishop Lee in his daily life and work is not only the chief pastor for the churches in his diocese, but is also a witness to the reconciling work of Christ in the world. Just as the bishops of old, preached, taught, and prayed for the healing of the people, Bishop Lee carries on this ministry ordained by Jesus Christ along with the bishops of the 110 dioceses that make up the Episcopal Church. Every day he is testifying to the transformative power of the Gospel in the multitude of neighborhoods that make up the Diocese of Chicago. His ministry inspires us to do the same right here in DeKalb and in the communities we are connected to worldwide through the Body of Christ.

I hope you will join me in giving a warm welcome to Bishop Lee this Sunday, October 6th. I have made sure to provide time for him to visit with all of you, with our youth and adults preparing for confirmation, and also with the larger DeKalb community and their pets at our Fifth Annual Pet Blessing that afternoon at 1P.M.

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Stacy+

YoonJin Kim, Pianist

Please welcome our new pianist/accompanist!

A native of South Korea, YoonJin is a graduate student at Northern Illinois University where she is completing both a Performer's Certificate and Master's Degree in Piano Performance. YoonJin received her Bachelor's Degree from Han Yang University and also a diploma from the prestigious Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. She is a student of Dr. William Goldenberg and holds several Graduate Assistantship Awards at NIU.

YoonJin has performed as a piano soloist with the Millennium Symphony Orchestra in South Korea, and was also a Concerto Competition Winner in 2010 and Soloist with the NIU Philharmonic Orchestra in 2011. Among other awards received in Korea, she was the First Place Winner in both the 12th Music Education Paper and The Republic of Korea Competitions.

YoonJin performs frequently as an accompanist, as well as in solo and chamber music recitals. Recent chamber music performances include the Sogno Trio at NIU. Her accompanying repertoire is extensive. As an NIU piano graduate assistant, YoonJin has accompanied students for many juries and recitals in both the instrumental and voice programs at NIU.

YoonJin is the accompanist for the NIU University Chamber Choir (2010-Present). In Korea, she was the accompanist for both the GwaCheonNobis Choir and Presbyterian Church Choir for two years. In the US [DeKalb, IL], she was the church accompanist at the Northern Illinois Korean Church from 2010-2013, and is now the 2013-2014 Pianist/Accompanist for St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Her professional aspirations include collaborating with other artists. In addition to broadening her experience and repertoire with instrumental, choral and vocal accompaniment, YoonJin would like to develop a new chamber music (trio/duo) group. YoonJin teaches at the Northern Illinois Community Arts School, and maintains her own Private Piano Studio.

In addition to her two loving parents, she has a younger brother and sister that make up her family in Korea. Upon arriving in the US, she occasionally (what student has time?) enjoys experimenting with cooking using recipes from the Internet, which is a new experience.

All Saints Sunday
Sunday, November 3rd

All Saints Sunday Remembrance of Everyday Saints to be prayed for in the prayers of the people will be observed on Sunday, November 3. A very meaningful part of this service is the remembrance of the saints in our lives who have gone before us. This year, we will be setting aside a space in the parish hall where pictures can be placed of those whom we remember as teaching and inspiring us in our faith. Cards will be provided in which parishioners may write a short remembrance or share a saintly quality embodied by a loved one.

We will have the cards available in the parish hall by the beginning of October and will set up the area on October 27. All parishioners are invited to participate and sign up names for both the altar of remembrance and the list of every day saints to be read in the prayers of the people.

Sign up names of the beloved everyday saints in your life who have gone on to glory (who are deceased) by October 27th on the list in the Parish Hall or via email to the Parish Office.

Our ingathering (collection) for the United Thank Offering (UTO) will be in the spring, but it's always an appropriate time to give thanks!  Expressions of thanks in the form of coins or bills collected for the ingathering is a great way to support the mission and ministry of the Church throughout the world.  I encourage you to start now incorporating thanksgivings into your daily life.  Blue Boxes for collections are located in the buffet at the rear of the sanctuary.  Help yourself to one, or use any container you have at home.  If you'd like more information about UTO, you can visit the website at www.utochange.org   ~Peggy Newby

News from the Altar Guild!

Over the past few years, Rev. Stacy along with the Altar Guild has been examining the purchase of new vestments as some of ours are in need of replacement. We are very thankful to Nan Mason whose excellent seamstress talents has enabled St. Paul's to enjoy the use of these vestments for more than 20 years. The vestments purchased by St. Paul's will be part of the "furnishings" of the Church; they will belong to the church. Acquiring nice furnishings for our church, both traditional and contemporary that fit with its unique architecture adds to the spirituality and mystery of our faith as we worship together in God's house and helps provide "a sanctuary where the Lord may dwell."

We met with Trevor Floyd whose company is based in New Jersey. He visited St. Paul's to view our sanctuary and explore our needs and worship tastes. We have received drawings of the vestment designs along with material samples. We are very excited with the designs for green and white vestments along with the matching stoles and altar items. These designs embrace our worship space by drawing from existing décor. The purchase of these items was approved by the vestry at the September meeting.

Soon the designs and material samples will be posted on the bulletin board so stop and take a look! Accompanying the designs will be information about the opportunity for individuals or groups to donate one of the items "in memory of" or "in thanksgiving for."

The "retiring" vestments from St. Paul's will continue to provide glory to worship space through donation. One place being considered is St. Mary Mission in Pennsylvania. They collect and distribute used religious items to those in need.

Best, from the Altar Guild, Jocelyn Prall, Peg Newby, Jane Nenonen, and Pat Brown
