News from St. Paul's Episcopal Church              Contents          September 2013

Dear Friends,

I am writing to you after a long week of #prayers2pass activities at St. Paul's and Grace Place Campus Ministry. In case you haven't heard about prayers2pass you can find more here: www.prayers2pass.com . The idea was at its core a simple answer to the question: where can we meet our neighbors at their point of greatest need? Every day many of our neighbors--most of them NIU students--walk through our property on their way to and from class. If you take a moment to think back to your own early twenties you will recall that it is an exciting and stressful time in life, full of possibilities and uncertainties about the future. While I have received many kudos for coming up with this idea, it wasn't my idea! Prayers2pass was born out of a conversation between Chris Krueger, Rochelle Cripe, and me at a Thrive workshop in February. It was as much an idea of my partners as it was mine.   The idea continued to grow and develop into a plan through conversation with the other Thrive team members (Ellen Anderson, Terry Dickow, and Jamie Stubblefield) back at St. Paul's a couple of weeks later. We tried out this idea of handing out snacks, water, and prayers to students preparing for finals in late April 2013. We--the students and St. Paul's-- were all pleasantly surprised how well it went!

We decided to have a welcome week edition this fall based on that positive experience. This time we chatted up the students, took their prayer requests, and gave them refreshments for two days in a row at two different locations. To quote Rev. Amy (campus pastor at Grace Place), it was "Awesomeness on a stick!" I agree! What made this event so awesome was that we did this together. It wasn't about me. It wasn't about the Thrive team. It was about the whole body of Christ at St. Paul's pulling together to witness to the love of Christ and share that good news in our corner of the kin-dom of God. In short, it was about Jesus.

When we keep Jesus at the center of our life, it shows. Already we are becoming known as "that church that goes outside and talks to people". Sounds simple, but this action is simply revolutionary in a day and age when the media rarely prints "Church" and "Good News" in the same headline.

On September 8th the Feed My Lambs Breakfast ministry will begin our Sunday School hour at 9AM for children, youth, and their friends and families followed by the lesson of the day.   You will notice some signs around the property advertising this ministry to our neighbors. Our neighbors are here on the grounds day in and day out. When we keep Jesus at the center of our life at St. Paul's then we realize he's not just inside our building, he's outside too! Ashes on the Go, Prayers2pass, Pet Blessings, and Feed My Lambs are just a few of the ways we can meet our neighbors where they are and witness to the wonderful works of God in the midst of us all. I think it's safe to say that God wants us to keep going outside, talking to people, being friendly to our neighbors whatever their faith, and sharing the good news of living a life centered in Christ. What form that will take next is up to you!

In Christ,

Rev. Stacy+

Prayer2Pass: Welcome Week Edition Report

After the success of our Prayers2Pass prayers in hospitality outreach event during finals week, the Thrive Team organized a Prayers2Pass event during Welcome Week. Thank you to all those who donated snacks and drinks for this event! The drinks were a nice reprieve for the students as they walked to class in the 90+degree heat. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped pass out the drinks and snacks as well.

Letter from The Senior Warden, Luke Krueger

In God We Trust...Others Might Need the Help of a Nametag

lukekrueger I am pretty good with names. I do my best to ask for a name once, and then never have to do so again. In fact, I am embarrassed to ask for a name a second time. This past August 18th, I had to face that embarrassment when the Rev. Jim Steen visited St. Paul's.

It was during the passing of the peace, as I waded through our congregation, giving greetings when I turned and ran into Jim. Jim is the Director of Ministries for the diocese of Chicago. I've met him a dozen times; he's sat in on our vestry meetings multiple times; I've had lunch with the man a few times! And in that moment, I could not for the life of me recall his name. Maybe I was still fatigued from the camp in Vermont; or the travel-Chris and I had just returned home the night before.

I was cordial, "Hi, how are you doing?" I exclaimed. Jim, the most cordial man you will ever meet, reached out, big grin on his face and said, "Luke, it's so good to see you." There it was. Jim, a man who meets literally hundreds if not a thousand new people a month gallivanting all over our diocese had no trouble recalling my name. I on the other hand, went blank.  Jim, perhaps sensing this continued, "Jim Steen, always great to see you, Luke. Peace be with you."

For the rest of the service, I sat in my pew, sulking, lamenting my lapse in memory. Jim's recall seemed mythical to me, while mine felt very narrow and selfish.  I felt like the biggest jerk in the world. "How does the man do it?" I kept thinking. At the end of the service though during the postlude, I reached to my shirt pocket to grab a pen, and I felt something: My nametag. Did Jim naturally remember my name? Maybe. Or he might have been aided by the nametag. I hope it was the latter...

Growing up, I attended a church that had nametags. However, the call to wear them was almost militant. Every Sunday, if I didn't where my nametag, I would hear from a half-dozen people, "Why don't you have your nametag?" Each week, one of the ministers, would come to the pulpit, wearing his or her nametag, and admonish everyone who was not wearing theirs. It got so that a teenager such as I was finally felt that urge to rebel, and say, "I'm forgetting it at home every week."

Needless to say, it's ironic that I'm now writing about the virtue of these nametags at St. Paul's. But a few people have brought up the issue of nametags to me, and some have thanked me for regularly wearing mine as it has helped them and their entry into our community.

We're great at introducing ourselves, and those who join us regularly we come to know pretty well. Yet, consider those people who are coming into St. Paul's. They meet a few dozen people over the course of a few weeks, and the names begin to blur. I sympathize with them because I was in their shoes only a few years ago. These folks are often where I was with Jim: caught awkwardly unable to return the exchange of names; reticent to ask that person for their name again.

There is a great story I like to recount about Luke Stubblefield. Luke really liked the nametags. So much so that he wanted one. Jaime, being the ever accommodating father that he is, made one for Luke - hand written and encased it in his (Jaime's) nametag cover. Luke wanted the real thing though. And he marched right up to Ellen Anderson and asked her for a nametag of his own. The next week, Luke had a nametag waiting for him that to this day, he proudly wears.

God knows us so well - to the point where (as we are reminded in the book of Luke) he has counted every hair on our head. For the rest of us though, we might need a little help from time to time, like a nametag.  In all we do to grow the church, a simple action in support of this outreach effort goes a long way.

St. Paul's at the TAILS Mutt Strut

Saturday, September 7th, 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.

St. Paul's, DeKalb and St. Peter's, Sycamore will be co-sponsoring a booth at the TAILS Humane Society's 8th Annual Mutt Strut Dogwalk, Funfest, and 5K-9 Run for the Rescues. We will be distributing information about our respective Pet Blessings this October (St. Peter's: October 5th & St. Paul's: October 6th). The clergy of St. Paul's and St. Peter's will also be offering blessings for dogs at our booth from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. on September 7th. Rev. Stacy is looking for some additional volunteers (of all ages) to staff the booth to greet dogs and their people, hand out dog biscuits, and spread the word about our Fifth Annual Pet Blessing on October 6th. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to share the love God has for all of Creation, and to tell the good news of how God is at work in the world through St. Paul's Episcopal Church. It's also an opportunity to support our brothers and sisters at St. Peter's as they spread the news about their ministry in Sycamore too.

Two members of St. Paul's serve on the TAILS Humane Society board: Sharon Dowen and Rev. Stacy. Rev. Stacy is raising funds for TAILS on "Team Copper and Guy" and Sharon will also soon have a fundraising page online for "Team Penny". Please contact Sharon and/or Rev. Stacy or visit their team pages if you would like to make a donation to TAILS Humane Society.

St. Paul's is proud to support the great work TAILS does in our community not only for pets seeking adoption, but through programs like Pawsitive TAILS which seeks to nurture the human-animal connection. Follow this link for a Daily Chronicle article from June of this year about the work of Pawsitive TAILS at local nursing homes.

Sunday School and Feed My Lambs Ministry Begins!
Sunday, September 8th

Kick-Off Sunday to mark the beginning of the Sunday School year will be September 8th. Feed My Lambs ministry will also begin that Sunday with breakfast served at 9:00 AM. This breakfast ministry is intended to be for our children and the children in our neighborhood - a coffee hour for children, so to speak. The idea for this ministry came out of our experience this past year with young visitors from St. Paul's neighborhood who came to us in need of nourishment for body and soul. We will serve all children who arrive before the start of Sunday School so there won't be a distinction between members and visitors or needy and nurtured.  Breakfast will be served at 9:00 a.m.

We are looking for donations of non-breakable cups & bowls, as well as dry cereal (low sugar), cereal bars, juice, and milk.  We will also need volunteers to help serve Christ's lambs. If you've been looking for a way to spread the love of Christ to all people, please speak to Rev. Stacy, Rochelle Cripe, Julie Stubblefield, Maureen Gerrity or Luke Krueger.

Sincerely,

Maureen Gerrity

In July Rev. Stacy talked to Jake Dell, Manager of Digital Marketing and Advertising Sales Communication at the Episcopal Church center in New York. At that time Mr. Dell asked if we had prayer request to be prayed for at the Chapel of Christ the Lord. Rev. Stacy asked that the Feed My Lambs ministry be lifted up in prayer On July 24, St. Paul's new breakfast ministry was prayed for at the Chapel of Christ the Lord. You can see the prayer card signed by Presiding Bishop Katherine Jefferts-Schori on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall.

United Thank Offering

Our ingathering (collection) for the United Thank Offering (UTO) will be in the spring, but it's always an appropriate time to give thanks!  Expressions of thanks in the form of coins or bills collected for the ingathering is a great way to support the mission and ministry of the Church throughout the world.  I encourage you to start now incorporating thanksgivings into your daily life.  Blue Boxes for collections are located in the buffet at the rear of the sanctuary.  Help yourself to one, or use any container you have at home.  If you'd like more information about UTO, you can visit the website at www.utochange.org   ~Peggy Newby

Thanks from the Anderson Family

To our St. Paul's family,

Thank you for the dessert reception following the picnic. The cake, balloons, personal comments and notes and the photo book Cliff Cleland assembled made it a special event for us. As we shared, we have been thought good times, terrible times, stressful times and jubilant times as individuals and as a parish over the last 32 years. We have felt, and continue to feel, surrounded by your love and support.  I think that is why leaving St. Paul's is the most difficult part of this move. David will be around in to October but I will be leaving on September 7 to join our darling new grandson, Henry Christopher and his parents Lindsey and Ty in Maryland. Keep us in your prayers as we set off on this exciting new adventure. Thank you again for the special send off and remember, we are 30 minutes from Gettysburg and Antietam, 1 ½ hours to Washington. Come and visit!

August Food Pantry Report and Reminders

Thanks to all parishioners who contributed to Food Pantry Sunday in August. On Wednesday, August 14, St. Paul's donated 160 food items, a bag of fresh garden vegetables, and 216 diapers. One generous parishioner donated 2 cases of soup. This donation was sorely needed. The Food Pantry did not have a single can of soup on its shelves that Wednesday morning! Donations for 2013 now total 3,384 items.

The need for generous donations continues. The team from St. Paul's that worked at the pantry on Thursday morning, August 1, served approximately 75 clients. Since the food pantry is also open on Thursday evenings, the day's total probably reached 100 or more. During the entire month of July, the pantry served 715 clients. It looks as though a new high in the number of clients served will be reached this month.  The staff and clients of the Food Pantry continue to be very grateful for your contributions.

The next food pantry collection will be on Sunday, September 8th. Thanks.

Every week we are blessed to have beautiful flowers on the altar arranged by our own St. Paul's Flower Guild.  While many parishioners sponsor flowers in memory of loved ones, you can sponsor flowers for any event or thanksgiving to God in your life: birthdays, anniversaries, graduation, thanksgiving for good health, thanksgiving for the birth of a child or grandchild, thanksgiving for a new job, thanksgiving for your family or friends.  Each Sunday after the 10:30A.M. service the flower sponsor is welcome to take the flowers home.  Frequently the flowers are also taken to home-bound parishioners or those in the hospital.  The suggested donation is $25- checks should be written to "St. Paul's" with "flower fund" in the memo. The poster for available Sundays for flower sponsorships is located in the hallway in between the Sanctuary and the Parish Hall.

Available dates for flower sponsorship include: 9/29, 11/3, 11/24, and all of December. Sundays in Advent we use greens, but memorials are welcome.
