News from St. Paul's Episcopal Church                Contents               May 2013
Dear Friends,

In March our congregation took the Church Assessment Tool (CAT) survey. As a parish participating in the Thrive program for congregational renewal and vitality we were asked to take the survey to better understand our identity, mission, and vision. Knowing who we say that we are and where we believe God is calling us to serve is crucial to planning for the future of St. Paul's. At our April 21st Vestry meeting, Susan Czolgosz (Associate for Transitions and Congregational Vitality in the Diocese of Chicago), interpreted our CAT survey report and gave us suggestions for further conversation. The good news is that St. Paul's is in a really good place! Overall the members of St. Paul's reported having high energy for and high satisfaction with our church. The CAT survey identifies such congregations as transformational. We also describe ourselves as a theologically progressive and adaptable in our approach to congregational life. Churches in that category tend to be places of great healing and hospitality. I know from your stories that this is an accurate description.

Susan told us that the challenge for churches that fall into the transformational category is the temptation to become complacent and say, "Ah! We have arrived!" Thankfully, that does not seem to be the prevailing opinion at St. Paul's. A majority responded that some moderate change was in order and that our mission needs to be clarified for the future. Our report shows that there is a lot of energy around expanding outreach ministries, equipping members for ministry and leadership, and also working to renew and revitalize the community around St. Paul's by building relationships with partners.

Additionally, it was clearly communicated in the survey report that many people are willing to serve God in and through the church in the world, but want some help figuring out how to do that. We are a highly educated group overall, which is not surprising for a university parish. The CAT survey report confirmed what I have long suspected: St. Paul's is full of possibilities and hidden treasures waiting to be uncovered in the hearts of its people and invested in the future of the Church (big "C" Church-not just St. Paul's!) and our neighborhood (locally and globally).

This is just a quick summary of our CAT survey report. The Vestry and our Thrive team will continue to work together to discuss the finer points of our report as we look toward a bright future at St. Paul's. I am delighted with the results and challenged as your rector. In other words, I'm far from bored! I look forward to exploring the opportunities to serve Christ in the world with you. If you are bored, let me know, or talk to one of the members of the Vestry or Thrive team. Let us help equip you for ministry.

It seems particularly timely and appropriate that in this season of Easter we have been reading accounts from the Acts of the Apostles of how the Holy Spirit moved the first Christians to share the good news of the Love of God exemplified in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The disciples were open to being transformed, and were flexible and open to change as God sent them to places they had never been. I pray that the stories of those first Christians, along with our CAT survey report, and the grace of the Holy Spirit will empower us to continue to witness to the Love of God that we know is alive in Christ at St. Paul's and in our everyday life as well.

In Christ,

Rev. Stacy+

Growth Is not a Goal; It is an Outcome

Letter from the Junior Warden, Luke Krueger

lukekruegerOn April 21, the vestry was visited by Susan Czolgosz, Associate for Congregational Vitality and Transitions in the Diocese of Chicago. She was there to walk us through the results of the Church Assessment Tool (CAT) survey. Across the board, St. Paul's is doing very well. When compared to other churches (similar in size) that have taken this survey, we are well above all favorable indicators. So far as growth in membership and giving go, we again, are exceeding the bar the metrics have established. We fall into a field of high energy, high satisfaction and are a progressive and adaptable church.

Ms. Czolgosz was very complementary and encouraging, but also mindful that we should not rest on our laurels. I feel confident this will not happen. On the Energy-Satisfaction Map, where we place is the quadrant called high-energy/high-satisfaction; it is labeled the "transformation quadrant". We are on the precipice, hopefully of being transformative, and the telling identifier of St. Paul's is what will help move us there: dynamic individuals.

We are a congregation that embodies a diverse spectrum of knowledge and talents - the CAT survey bears this out. As such, we are always looking for our new challenges to avoid malaise and complacency. One comment, concern, point worth making with our eyes to the future was the desire to continue to attract new members specifically young families. In short: growth. The key point though that Ms. Czolgosz stressed regarding growth was this: It is not a goal; it is an outcome.

This, I think, should be our mantra whenever we discuss growth: an outcome. St. Paul's is dynamic. Our congregation loves to be challenged, and we embrace opportunities to grow ourselves, which I hope will burst forth from our doors and filter into the community at large. As long as we continue to challenge ourselves and try new things to help shape St. Paul's I am confident the outcome will be sustained growth.

It feels like this consideration outcome vs. goal is already at work in St. Paul's. We continue to try new programs, evolving our worship: Prayers to Pass, Thrive, a creative liturgy team, and so on. What is great about all of these and other initiatives is that they are not done with the primary goal of bringing in more people. Rather, they are undertaken to improve St. Paul's trusting the result that we will continue to grow.

Remember that each week provides us these opportunities to grow, and more are coming up. From my perspective as Junior Warden, I can think of two opportunities that can contribute our outcomes: Spring Clean-Up and a weekly ground team.

Spring Clean-Up will be May 11 from 9 - 11-ish or noon. Please come out and help us get the grounds in order before our Lobster Boil and for the coming summer in which we can show off the lovely grounds and building that house our congregation. Be sure to bring some gloves and any other tools you can lend to help in hedge trimming, applying mulch, washing windows, and so on.

Also, and this is sort of my point as outcome not goal. The wind of the DeKalb area naturally blows a great deal of detritus onto our grounds. Vince and Pat McMahon have quietly spent Wednesday mornings policing our grounds for trash. I want to thank them for doing this, and now it's our turn. The Building and Grounds Committee will begin a weekly schedule of keeping our grounds clean. We will come by once a week and clear the grounds of larger bits of garbage. If you would like to be placed on this calendar, please contact me at kruegerlw@hotmail.com. It is not a major commitment, but it is one of the many small things we can do that make St. Paul's a transformational church. Frankly, I was inspired by the McMahons. They selflessly and without regard for plaudits undertook this task for many years. I am happy that now more of us can take ownership of the aesthetics of St. Paul's. More of us will now be a part of this effort. It has grown, what a wonderful outcome.

This year we will also celebrate with prayer, song, and communion the Ascension of our Lord Jesus on Thursday, May 9th the 40th day after Easter Sunday.
