News from St. Paul's Episcopal Church                Contents               April 2013
Dear Friends,

I am happy to announce that the Rev. Dr. Joyce Beaulieu has joined St. Paul's as a Priest Associate. Joyce and her partner, Molly (Lovelock), moved to DeKalb in late 2012. Most recently Joyce served as the rector of Holy Trinity, Belvidere. Molly is a financial consultant for non-profit organizations. Joyce is a self-employed priest in the Diocese of Chicago. Joyce is often serving as a supply priest on Sundays at parishes in the Diocese of Chicago, as well as in the Diocese of Quincy where her priestly ministry is greatly needed. While traveling to a new church every week has its exciting moments, it is also nice to have a parish where you can hang your hat and be involved in the community Monday through Saturday.

What is a priest associate?  At St. Paul's the ministry of priest associate is a non-stipendiary position that reports to the rector.  Joyce will participate in the life of St. Paul's parish, in worship, fellowship, outreach, evangelism, fundraising, and other activities, as she is able. Some Sunday attendance may be precluded, for as long as she serves as a Sunday supply priest in parishes in the Dioceses of Chicago and Quincy.

This means that in cooperation and conversation with me Joyce will share her particular gifts as a priest with St. Paul's through ministries such as preaching, leading worship, and mentoring and teaching small groups.   Occasionally (such as when I am away on vacation) you may encounter Joyce as the priest providing pastoral care, or the priest in charge of worship and preaching on a Sunday morning.  But for all intents and purposes, as the rector of St. Paul's I remain your primary pastor, preacher, and priest.

I am delighted to have Joyce joining us at St. Paul's as our priest associate.  While some of you have had the opportunity to meet Joyce in the past few months on Sundays or at other events during the week, we will officially welcome Joyce and Molly on Sunday, April 28th.  Joyce will preach at both services that day and be present in fellowship after each service.  Please plan to attend and introduce yourself to Joyce and Molly.

In Christ,

Rev. Stacy+

Lobsters are Coming! A Lobster Boil Primer!
Sunday, April 7

Things are gearing up for the ECW's 43rd annual fundraiser

which will be held on May 18. This event not only results in

raising money for many local charities and St. Paul's programs

but also is a wonderful community building event for our

parish family.

We will be kicking the event off at the Low Sunday Brunch on April 7. At that time you will be encouraged to sign up help with one or more of the various tasks to make this event a success. The basics:

  • Lobsters are ordered with a form or on-line - orders are due by May 13th
  • Live lobsters are transported from Boston to DeKalb
  • From 4 - 8 pm we work feverishly cooking the lobsters and filling the orders
  • At 8 pm we have celebratory dinner together (byo lobster or entrée of you choice!)

We need everyone's help third grade and up! Childcare will be provided for our younger members! More details will follow but mark your calendars!

Creative Liturgy at St. Paul's will continue to enhance the Holy Week services as it did starting with Palm Sunday. This included0 some new additions to the Palm Sunday service with a contemporary Hosannah, Ho! for the procession of the palms. Sue Ouellette added a wonderful and colorful, artistic liturgical dance component to the processional, with help from the kids in the congregation. The Passion Play, with several new people [voices] from the congregation, including Chris Krueger who gave a wonderful Narration, was enhanced by Yuki Nakano's percussive improvisations on the Steel Pan.

Under the inspiring guidance of Rev. Stacy, The Triduum [Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Saturday Easter Vigil] will continue to provide many contemplative, interesting and fun experiences. The closing Saturday Vigil, will be enhanced by many extra nuances: a beautifully sung Esxultet by Rick, Freyja, Andrew & Lorraine, a wonderful Godly Play story shared by Maureen Gerrity, and several liturgical dramas acted with sounds of poetry by Sue Ouellette, Brian Wagner and Luke Krueger, who wrote the script.

Arts in the Community

In addition to Cliff Cleland's upcoming photo show (see below) we have a few more artistic adventures for you to explore this month. FYI, Yuki Nakano's, Steel Pan Recital last month was Fantastic, as was Luke Krueger's Play at NIU, that was written up in the DeKalb newspaper.

Rick and Freyja Rasmussen-Johns will be joining the regular church choir at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Good Friday, at 7pm, to sing the John Rutter, Requiem.

If you want to be inspired by a talented pianist and artist, join us on Sunday,

April 14, 3:00 PM, at the First United Methodist Church in DeKalb, for Andrew Voelker's NIU junior piano recital. Andrew will be performing

Ludwig Van Beethoven's, Sonata No.5 "Spring" in F Major for violin and piano, Op. 24 and Frédéric Chopin's, Four Mazurkas, Op. 68. In support of Andrew, the St. Paul's music program is leading the reception that follows the recital. If you would like to help out, let Lorraine  know before the 14th. You can read more about Andrew Voelker on our church website. Good luck and have fun, Andrew!

St. Paul's Thrive Prayers 2 Pass
Tuesday, April 30th

The Thrive team at St. Paul's has been discerning together specific actions the Holy Spirit is calling us to connect with our neighbors and make the limestone walls of our church more permeable-like tissue paper.  Through prayer and conversation we have been inspired to hold an event that will offer prayers and hospitality to NIU students preparing for finals this spring.  This event is further inspired and informed by our experiences of offering "Ashes on the Go" on Ash Wednesday the past three years in the yard outside St. Paul's.   We have noticed at that event that many students are stressed out and have appreciated our offers to pray with them for various life circumstances.

We are looking for volunteers to help staff this event on Tuesday, April 30th from 10AM to 2PM.  We will be offering one-to-one prayers, a prayer wall for written prayers, and a prayer box for written prayers that are private.  In addition, we will have a "de-stressing" station with a punch-a-pillow station and volunteers are welcome to bring some furry friends for the students to pet!  Lastly we will be handing out some snacks with tweet length prayers (140 characters or less) and #prayers2pass@stpaulsdekalb on a label attached to it. We will also be tweeting prayers at #prayers2pass and inviting others to tweet their experience of this event and prayers to this hash-tag as well.  Jamie Stubblefield is also creating a website for this event and will be leading our social media presence.   You can help us by tweeting your excitement or experiences at this hash-tag as well!

If praying in person is not your thing, we will be holding a prayer vigil for those written and tweeted prayer requests the evening of April 30th from 6PM to 7PM in St. Paul's sanctuary.   Please contact Rochelle Cripe and/or Ellen Anderson  if you would like to be part of our hospitality and/or prayer team either during the day or in the evening.

We are accepting donations of snack food (think individually packaged items) or monetary donations for snacks.  We have already received a generous donation of energy drinks. Please contact Chris Krueger or Terry Dickow about snacks.

Vestry Retreat Report

On March 2nd, Rev. Stacy and the members of St. Paul's Vestry gathered in the parish hall for a retreat for the purpose of reviewing last year's goals, sharing some honest conversation, and setting new goals for 2013. The Rev. Jim Steen, Director of Ministries in the Diocese of Chicago, joined us as our facilitator in our mutual ministry review.

Rev. Stacy reported that at the Thrive learning team meeting in December 2012, they discussed many positive events in 2012 including Holy Week, the pet blessing, garden planting, the dedication of the St. Timothy Center, the choirs, Sunday School, the nursery, the developing a friendship with the Islamic Society at NIU, the decision to offer the rite of Holy Union to same-sex couples, Nets for Life at the DeKalb Corn Classic, and hosting and participating in the Stephanie Spellers workshop on Anglicanism Remixed.

We then discussed where Rev. Stacy's strengths lie, and areas where she might be able to grow, and then wardens and the vestry members had a chance to talk about their impressions of how things went in 2012.  Rev. Stacy also gave a similar assessment of the vestry.  I am happy to report that overall, everyone expressed a very positive impression of the past year.  The Building and Grounds Committee has accomplished a lot and the physical plant is in good shape overall.  The energy audit has been completed, and so have the bylaws revisions.  Also, although attendance has leveled off somewhat, it is much healthier (2010 Average Sunday Attendance was 58; 2011: 66; 2012: 68).  Other positive notes were that the Vestry members work well together and are respectful in conversation with each other.  Participation in vestry meetings is high, and everyone is willing to be involved in other ministries at St. Paul's.  We do feel that the vestry needs to be more effectively involved in stewardship, and that we could improve our communications with individual members and  small groups within the parish.

In reviewing last year's goals, it was noted that in 2012 a creative liturgy and worship team began. Vestry members now send written reports prior to the monthly meetings, and meeting minutes are posted on the church website as well as on the bulletin board in the parish hall.  Connecting with parishioners we don't know is a work in progress and still needs more work.  But we did manage to spread out some of our outreach ministry giving and not put it all at holiday time.

We also set goals for 2013.  Rev. Stacy plans to 1) help connect Thrive with the vestry and congregation with more communication about what's happening in meetings; 2) she wants to implement the integration of the Priest Associate, Rev. Joyce Beaulieu, into the congregation;  and 3) she would like to take a week's retreat for continued education and spiritual development.  The vestry plans to 1) take charge of stewardship involvement; 2) articulate more clearly how the vestry connects appropriately with the congregation; 3) look at how the vestry should configure itself in the future regarding spiritual/business vision and mission, and move beyond just the business aspect to see itself more as lay leadership; and 4) better define our role in ministry by identifying and articulating the changing role of the vestry in ministry and communicating that to the congregation.

We concluded our meeting with a celebration of the Eucharist.  As we departed and went our separate ways to lunch and home, I think we all left with a spirit of accomplishment as well as plenty of food for thought about how we might better serve God by working together both within and beyond the walls of St. Paul's church.

-Freyja Rasmussen-Johns, Clerk of the Vestry
