Bake Sale Next Wednesday, March 12

In 5/6 Advisory, we have been preparing for WE Day on March 26 by discussing actions we can take to empower youth around the globe. WE Day celebrates young people who are leading local and global change. The 5th and 6th graders are putting on a bake sale at 2:00 p.m. (dismissal) next Wednesday, March 12. All funds raised will go toward Free the Children's India campaign, which combats child labor and provides access to education to those who need it most. Learn more about Free the Children and WE Day at www.weday.com. Don't forget to bring a few extra dollars to school next Wednesday to buy some tasty treats and help us reach our goal!

Boys' ArchTalk a Success!

The ArchTalk this week was a tremendous success.  We had a wonderful turnout with over 40 people in attendance, including two sophomores from St. Mary's College High School and two members of the Cal Varsity Rugby team.  The focus of the evening was helping our students gain self-confidence, enabling them to successfully navigate inevitable changes and transitions in their lives.

We started the evening by discussing the "fears" that all boys/men face in today's increasingly complex society.
Here is a list of top fears experienced by the participating fathers and sons, followed by the number of people:

Fear of place (heights, planes, etc.): 9

Fear of injury: 2

Fear of family rejection: 2

Fear of not providing: 1

Fear of time and potential: 3

Fear of friendship and rejection: 2

Fear of loss and death: 5

Fear of failure: 2

Fear of exposure to others (public speaking, etc.): 2

Fear of reality of dreams: 2

Other topics discussed included communication between
authority figures in and outside of the home, responsibilities and
academic workloads in high school and college, time management, and effective study habits.

Our students were highly engaged, and their attention and participation were spectacular. All in attendance were extremely impressed with how the young men in the room spoke honestly and openly about their concerns.  Those in attendance acknowledged this was time well spent. It was a beautiful evening to be a part of and it is our hope that the "boys" will have other opportunities to gather, talk, and bond. Many thanks to all who attended.

Pizza Wednesdays Coming Up!

Lighten your load and pre-order a month of Wednesday lunches! The 8th grade class will be selling cheese pizza by the slice Wednesday, March 19 through Wednesday, April 30. Pizza will only be available via pre-order for all six Fridays (we won't be selling it by the week). Your child can get one slice every Friday for a total of $18 or two slices for $30. Paper order forms will be sent home and an electronic version will be emailed to all families this coming Monday. The deadline for ordering and payment is Monday, March 17.

So let someone else do the cooking, and support the 8th graders' trip to Washington D.C. at the same time!
Summer Camps & Programs Fair

Parents still looking for summer camps, activities, and programs for their children this summer can attend a special fair on Sunday, March 9 to see firsthand all of the Bay Area options available to them. See the flyer below and visit this website for more details: Summer Camps and Programs Fair
