The 2016 Legislative Session is now behind us. I want to remind our members that our NAIFA-Florida Lobbyist Tim Meenan continues to work on legislative issues for you, me and our client's. Copies of the Session Dispatch can be reviewed on the NAIFA Florida website by clicking  HERE

Rumor has it that DOL Secretary Perez is likely to unveil the final version of the fiduciary rule on April 6 at the Center for American Progress (CAP). As you know, the latest DOL run kicked off in February 2015 when President Barack Obama debuted the proposal at the AARP.

While the details about the specific final rule remain uncertain, we do know that the DOL final rule will likely be better than the proposed rule because of member involvement. And we know legislation is more likely to succeed with member participation. NAIFA will be completing an in-depth analysis of the rule. They have asked key contacts to schedule in district meetings and are urging support of bipartisan legislation. There will be ongoing lobbying with a focus on the SAVERS Act and the Affordable Retirement Advise Act encouraging Congressional Leadership to bring the bills to the floor. NAIFA will host webinars and educational programs for members. The upcoming Congressional Conference on May 24-25 in Washington DC will be focused on addressing remaining concerns in the DOL Final Rule. You are invited to attend.

Like it or not, if insurance is your profession then politics is your business. Folks there are serious threats to our industry on the horizon. Your participation is more important than ever. Help NAIFA help you stay in business. Be faithful in being a member of your professional association - NAIFA. Encourage other insurance colleagues to be a member. Get involved in NAIFA's Political Involvement activities and become or renew your IFAPAC membership.

Locally we have a lot planned and could use volunteers help to serve on committees. Feel free to contact me directly (904) 296-2500 and we'll determine the best place for you to serve. Plan to attend our events. The annual Day of CE is coming up on April 28th. Wonderful speakers, food, fellowship and education. Another YAT / YPAJ Professional Networking Event on May 17th at Ruth's Chris Steak House. Back by popular demand, we will feature our MDRT Panel on May 25th.

IFAPAC
IFAPAC: 50 YEARS OF ADVOCACY

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of IFAPAC, the NAIFA Blog will run occasional posts by NAIFA members highlighting their political involvement and action.

If Insurance Is Your Profession, Then Politics Is Your Business

By Ashley C. Corbally, National Young Advisors Team Committee

When I first entered the insurance and financial services industry, I didn't grasp the gravity of the legislative challenges the industry faces every day on both the federal and state levels. Whether it's fighting for our place in the advisory world, overcoming misconceptions about our professional integrity or advocating on behalf of our clients to ensure they have access to affordable services, I was nave, to say the least.

After about a year of being a NAIFA member, I was asked to contribute to IFAPAC. I did. Not because I fully understood what the PAC accomplished for us, but because I respected the person who asked me. Later that year, I attended the NAIFA-Montana State Convention and met our state lobbyist for the first time. That introduction to the world of politics forever changed my passion for the industry. That was the moment when I began to understand that our power is about educating lawmakers.

In 2013, I attended NAIFA's first Congressional Conference in Washington, D.C. I wanted to learn about the process. I wanted to see grassroots efforts in action and see if they were effective.

At the conclusion of my first Capitol Hill meeting, I discovered that my member of Congress was an ordinary person. He had a family and a business back home-just like me. I realized that he-just like me-could not possibly have expert knowledge about every subject on which he would have to cast a vote-and that included our industry.

As an individual constituent, my voice can only have so much sway with my members of Congress. That is why IFAPAC has played a crucial role in my passion for NAIFA. IFAPAC provides agents and advisors with a strong and unified voice on Capitol Hill. IFAPAC is a critical tool in our efforts to protect the industry from harmful legislation. IFAPAC gives all NAIFA members the ability to educate Congress and our state legislators about the impact that proposed legislation, or regulation, will have on consumers, financial services professionals, insurance agents and the economy as a whole. For these reasons and more, I contribute monthly to IFAPAC and make additional contributions at national and state association meetings. More importantly, I try to spread the word about the significance of IFAPAC to my fellow NAIFA members and commit to regular grassroots activities with my members of Congress.

I'm a YAT and I love what I do. I want to make sure I can still do what I love 30 years from now. But I can't do it alone! All NAIFA members must be active. Won't you join me?

Let's Go to Washington, DC!

NAIFA Congressional Conference

In the past three years, over 2,500 NAIFA members from every corner of the country came to Washington, DC and took to Capitol Hill to meet with lawmakers and advise them on how their decisions affect agents, brokers, and their clients.

On May 24th-25th, 2016 NAIFA will be holding its 2016 Congressional Conference with a similar goal - to establish and cultivate relationships with lawmakers, to share the expertise of NAIFA members, and educate them on the value of life insurance, annuities, retirement savings, and employee benefits for 75 million American families.

From the Florida Department of Financial Services, Insurance Insights:

Life and Health Agents: Working from Home?

Many life and health agents rent space in a "virtual office" that are typically just conference rooms where the agent can meet with the clients outside of their home. However, the agent's home is usually the place where records are stored. Therefore the agent's home address should be listed as the business address on file with the Department, not the location of the rented space. The Department may visit a licensee's home office to audit their insurance records.

You can easily update your address (and other demographic information) online via your MyProfile account.
