CELEBRATE - EDUCATE - ADVOCATE

The evening of January 22nd was absolutely wonderful as your association gathered to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of our member in 2014. MDRT and NAIFA Quality Award producers were lauded and two members of our association were held out for special recognition.

Harry Blanton, of Robert Tyson & Associates, is the recipient of the 2014 Community Service Award. Harry's long and dedicated service to his neighborhood and assistance to families with grave medical conditions is exemplary of the very best in our membership. Steve Glenn, of Financial Design Associates, recipient of the 2014 C.G. Snead/J.F. Bryan, III Memorial Award was recognized for his dedication to our career and in fostering the professional development of our members. These awards recipients are not notified until the moment the award is announced and their respective families walk in to receive the award with them. You can imagine what a special moment this is for all. I also want to thank and recognize William Koch, general agent for Northwestern Mutual in winning the 2014 NAIFA Agency Managers Membership Award! By celebrating and recognizing the achievements of these members we are encouraging the very best in professional conduct.

This month we hold our Day of CE on Thursday, February 26th at the Ramada Baymeadows. Take a moment to click on the link and review the lineup of outstanding course offerings. For one low price your head will be stuffed with valuable information along with your belly as breakfast and lunch is provided!

Don't forget to note your calendars for our advocacy event "Day on the Hill", March 10-11th, when we'll gather in Tallahassee to make sure state legislators are informed of your concerns. Also the YAT's, under Becky Brothers' leadership, have organized a special event with Jacksonville's Young Attorneys at Fionn MacCool's. Congrats Becky for creating networking opportunities for our future leaders!

NAIFA Jacksonville is fulfilling its mission to you - educating, advocating and promoting ethical conduct of its members. I hope you are proud of your membership and will encourage others to join!

Congratulations to Our Awards Recipients!

Keep Calm and Love YAT's

Young Advisors Team Submitted by Robert Siddell

Outside of NAIFA if you do a Google search for YAT's you'll get a Cajun, Creole and Crazy Restaurant in Indianapolis.  Eventually one would think after scrolling through the search results of images that at some point a Young Professional would appear with an internet link to NAIFA-YAT's "Nope".  Outside of NAIFA one might ask what are YAT's? NAIFA defines us as members that are under 40 and less than five years while the rest of the financial industry defines us as Rookies, Green Horn, Neophyte and\or that New Kid in the office. YAT's may be NAIFA's freshmen class, but we are the future torch bearers in the financial services industry.

After two years of being a YAT, I finally understand the importance in the development as a professional YAT has been. Like many new members in the beginning, the $42.81 monthly monetary commitment cut into my Sunday Funday fund, but with a little education from Frank Mantay stressing the importance of belonging to a professional organization I said, "What the Heck." Since that first luncheon, I've been introduced to Senior Financial Professional's from State Farm, Mass Mutual, the Principal, and many more that have shared trade secrets and helped me grow professionally. Countless NAIFA members have taken time out of their busy schedule to share ideals, provided mentorship and establish potential referral bases.

YAT's are business heterogeneous in that fact that most of us work for various competing companies, but ALL go through the same struggles in the beginning.  Developing an outside peer group is one way new Financial Professionals can address those struggles.  Shared adversity fosters peer respect and in a competitive sales environment building relationships and not enemies is great for practice building.  While there may not be a written Code of Conduct for YAT's, there is a silent reciprocating honor code of respecting each other's client's.

Everyone loves to brag about new business, but never have I ever heard of anyone in the industry boasting, "Sure hope my elected official passes new laws to make acquiring new clients harder." YAT's have a unique opportunity through the NAIFA Political Involvement Committee and Day on the Hill to meet with decision makers about proposed bills, educate policy makers and influence laws that are in the best interest of the clients we serve plus our industry standards.

Today's increased regulatory requirements and technological advancements are changing the landscape of how financial services industry is being ran. New Financial Professionals will have to deal with barriers of entry that Senior Advisors didn't have to deal with when they first started.  New Financial Professionals will have to rely not only on their in house company training, but will have to seek outside support from professional organizations.  YAT's as members of NAIFA will gain that additional support needed to build resiliency and develop a competitive advantage needed to succeed. YAT's have a lot to learn, but we also have a lot to offer and together with NAIFA we #StandUnited!

Whether you're new to NAIFA, or have been a member for several years, YAT provides you with resources geared specifically to your career development needs as a young insurance or financial advisor. We provide you with a variety of tools that you can use to better equip yourself to overcome challenges and achieve your professional goals. Learn ideas on how to grow your business, take advantage of NAIFA's first-rate sales and skills training and receive discounts on a range of professional resources.

NAIFA created the Young Advisors Team (YAT) for members who are 40 years of age and under, or within their first five years in the industry (OR if you feel like a YAT... then you ARE a YAT!)  Purpose is to ensure that young and new advisors receive the vital tools, resources, and networks necessary to succeed in the financial services industry.

NAIFA IS AT WORK FOR YOU
, and many times you do not hear about the bills that are "stopped in their tracks"!

On June 17, 2014, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released revised Medicare Marketing Guidelines. They then issued a "clarifying" memorandum on August 14, 2014, indicating that agents are prohibited from calling existing enrollees to discuss other plan options. NAIFA along with the carriers in this market weighed in with CMS and a variety of lawmakers. Upon revisiting their decision, CMS concluded in September that they are reverting to their previous guidance on this matter - allowing agents to contact their existing clients to discuss plan options.

NAIFA'S LEGISLATIVE WIN...

On Jan. 8, the U.S. Senate passed the Terrorism Risk Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (TRIA) containing NARAB II. For all advisors, NARAB will mean much-needed reciprocity in producer licensing. It will improve efficiencies for NAIFA members who are licensed in multiple states. The legislation also will benefit consumers by allowing them to maintain their preferred insurance agent or broker should they move to a different state.

You may have never run for public office. You might not know much about politics. But with NAIFA's Advisors Political Involvement Committee (APIC), you can still make a difference. Influence how Congress votes on legislation important to insurance and financial services professionals. You can get involved in a number of ways. The level of involvement is up to you. For more information, please contact Maggie Fogg at 703-770-8154 or mfogg@naifa.org.

IFAPAC
Please consider a contribution to YOUR Political Action Committee!

The Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Action Committee (IFAPAC) is a term used to describe collectively the PAC sponsored by NAIFA at the federal level and the PACs sponsored by each state association. Each PAC is a fund that supports the campaigns of candidates for public office who understand issues important to insurance agents and financial advisors. IFAPAC's goal is to help the associations advance the legislative and regulatory interests of the members of NAIFA. While any U.S. citizen can contribute to IFAPAC, only members of local NAIFA associations may be solicited to do so. Contributions must be voluntary. Contributions are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes.

Of approximately 4,600 political action committees registered with the Federal Election Commission, IFAPAC ranks in the top tier. IFAPAC is the largest insurance PAC in the country. In the last election cycle, the national IFAPAC contributed approximately $1.1 million to federal candidates and committees.

Member Benefit of the Month

Advisor 2020
Advisor 2020 presents cutting-edge research on industry trends and identifies opportunities for advisors seeking success in a changing marketplace.

Rapid marketplace and demographic shifts are having profound effects on insurance and financial advisors and will significantly reshape the industry by 2020, according to "Advisor 2020: The Forces and Opportunities Shaping the Financial Services Advisor of the Future. "

The book presents the results of two independent research studies, "The Market of the Future" and "The Advisor of the Future," and offers a framework advisors can use to capitalize on changing market forces and meet expanding client needs.

The studies' key findings include:
  • The demand for insurance and financial advisors will outpace the average growth of the U.S. workforce by 2020. However, the pool of candidates for these jobs will begin to shrink as the numbers of college graduates and early career changers decline.
  • Stiff competition for affluent clients will push more advisors into serving the middle market, which is currently underserved.
  • The growth of employment by small businesses will increase the pool of individuals and families needing insurance and financial products not offered at their workplaces.
  • Clients will demand a broad range of financial and non-financial services and products from advisors, including lifestyle management, wellness counseling and financial literacy education.
  • To succeed in this environment, some advisors will concentrate on small, niche products and services or market segments. Most, however, will work collaboratively with other professionals and paraprofessionals forming groups that can meet all their clients' growing advisory needs.
The research conducted for these studies will enable NAIFA members to make informed decisions about their practices, especially as they continue to serve the middle market and meet the changing needs of consumers.

Click HERE to purchase a copy of Advisor 2020.

NAIFA is the exclusive sponsor of "Advisor 2020: The Forces and Opportunities Shaping the Financial Services Advisor of the Future." Published by the GAMA Foundation, Advisor 2020 identifies likely future scenarios so advisors can anticipate and influence the financial forces of the future. The research conducted for these studies will enable NAIFA members to make informed decisions about their practices, especially as they continue to serve the middle market and meet the changing needs of consumers. See Backgrounder (PDF) for more details on Advisor 2020.

Also, NAIFA is developing professional development programs to prepare NAIFA members for the changes and opportunities described in Advisor 2020.
