Your Voice

If you missed our October luncheon and the 5-hour Ethics and Compliance CE, we're almost glad you did!  The room was packed with attendees including many new faces from near and far. It was exciting to see so many coming together to stay at the forefront of industry requirements.  Best of all was the conversation and acquaintances that were made.  It's so important to connect with one another and share the challenges and opportunities we all face.  Kudos to Cheryl Canzanella for doing such a great job in arranging the training along with our moderator, Tom Ashley, NAIFA-Florida's VP of Member Relations!

November promises to be an equally exciting event as we join together with the Society of Financial Service Professionals, Northeast Florida Chapter to bring NAIFA-Florida's Lobbyist Tim Meenan, NAIFA's voice in Tallahassee, to give us the latest information on legislative changes affecting our industry and clients.  The lunch portion will provide 1 hour of CE followed by a 2-hour educational program from the Society, "Investing for Income: Current Trends, Strategies and Products." This program provides CE for all disciplines.

I remember a time in my career when I was "too busy" to tune in to this vital information.   After all, I needed to be in front of clients and engaging them in financial products and services.   In time, I realized that the clients I wanted to be in front of the most were the ones with influence.  In order to gain that influence, I had to be current on the ideas and forces that constantly shape our society.  This is your opportunity to listen  to changes that are coming, influence those changes with your voice, and let our clients know how we're representing them.  Legislators Happy Thanksgiving!and other officials have been invited, so take this opportunity to meet them and remind them of the good, make that GREAT, work you do.

Don't forget to sign up early...  space is limited!

VTC OVERVIEW

Ben G. Baldwin, Jr., CLU, ChFC, CFP®, MSFS, MSM, AEP moderates this program where Dale Vetter, ChFC, MSFS, CLU, AEP, QFP looks at ways to maximize investment income in a low-return environment. Looking back, he will comment on changes in market performance over the past ten years, illustrating that the market rarely does what we expect it to do, thus the need to plan for contingencies. He will then look ahead and suggest ways of building an investment portfolio to accommodate future anticipated and unanticipated market fluctuations. Marc Silverman, MBA, CLU, ChFC, CFP®, will review the most common types of annuities companies are currently offering and some often-overlooked considerations, such as pro-rata vs. dollar-for-dollar features, that buyers must take into account when making a decision to buy an annuity. Finally, he will discuss matching a client's goals with the appropriate annuity. There will be an audience Q&A session following each speaker.

Attendees will learn:
  • Discover how to maximize investment income in a low-interest rate environment
  • Know how to implement an investment strategy to offset market swings
  • Understand the major differences among annuities being offered by companies today
  • Review some commonly overlooked features about annuities and relate them to client goals
Who should attend?

Estate planners, financial planners, investment advisors, insurance producers, and retirement counselors.

What NAIFA and YAT Means to Me...

Submitted by Howie Frank

It is with a heavy heart that I write this month's entry to our newsletter. The reason being is that in a few weeks I'll be moving out of the Jacksonville area to continue my career in another state, and although NAIFA will exist there, it will not be my familiar chapter I've grown to appreciate and enjoy over the last ten years.

What makes this association special are the people. Getting into this business at the age of 24, I knew only one person involved in insurance. She was my aunt, manager, and mentor, Margie Harner. She's taught me everything I know and I'll forever be grateful for the opportunity to work with her. NAIFA allowed me to meet other advisors, some just starting out like I was, and show that ultimately we're all in this together. There was an immediate sense of camaraderie that still follows the organization today and I have no doubt it will continue into the future.

I've also had the pleasure of being involved in the Young Advisors Team (YAT) during my time in NAIFA-Jacksonville. I've seen our local YAT chapter go from a few meetings a year to multiple socials, meet and greets and panel discussions that truly bring value to our younger members. But above all, YAT has made it possible for like-minded individuals to get together, share ideas and help fellow members realize that there are other professionals who meet the same challenges and obstacles as they do. I've made some incredible friends through YAT, and without it, this wouldn't have been possible. I would encourage all managers who are hiring new agents to get involved with YAT as much as they can. Your young advisors are going through a difficult start-up process and need the support that the Young Advisors Team can provide.

In closing, we are all part of a great organization but there's one simple step that must be taken to achieve our goals. Get involved. Whether it's attending the monthly meetings, teaching one session of our 40-Hour Life and Health class or going to our annual Day on the Hill event, your organization needs you as much as you need it. If you're on the fence about whether to join, go to Day on the Hill in Tallahassee. You'll realize that our lawmakers and representatives have so much happening to them on a daily basis, they can't possibly know everything about insurance and financial services. That's where we come in. Share your knowledge and expertise with those who will be making the laws that will directly influence your business. Do everything you can to make sure this industry is better off when you leave it for a future generation. There are people fighting everyday for you in NAIFA, join them.

Thank you NAIFA-Jacksonville,

Howie Frank

Your membership committee needs YOU!  Please bring a friend to our next event.  We need to show our members and non-members the many benefits of NAIFA.  If you are interested in becoming active in your Professional Organization, we have plenty for you to help with.  We will be making calls to agencies to remind them of events, luncheons, and socials and maybe YOU could be that contact for your office.  If you are interested, please contact me, Margie Harner, at 904-296-2500.

It is my honor to introduce two of our newest NAIFA-Jacksonville members, Zeak Davenport and Nathan Moore

While on Active Duty as a Naval Officer, Zeak earned his MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas. After 11 years of Active Duty that included four deployments overseas, he left the Active Duty side of the Navy and began a financial career with Prudential. Additionally, Zeak continues to serve his country as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy Reserves. He has been happily married to his wife, Elizabeth, for eight years and has a five year old son (Clark), a two year old daughter (Lucy) and a baby on the way, due in March. He enjoys spending time with his family, being involved in his church, reading Dean Koontz novels, and traveling abroad.

Nathan Moore Nathan L. Moore has been with AXA Advisors, LLC since February of 2004.  He is a Divisional Executive Vice President with the Continental Division, leading an office that currently houses more than 50 financial professionals in Northern Florida and Southern Georgia. The November elections will bring many new elected officials and the looming threat to the tax status of many insurance products is very real. IFAPAC
Please consider a contribution to YOUR Political Action Committee!

The Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Action Committee (IFAPAC) is a term used to describe collectively the PAC sponsored by NAIFA at the federal level and the PACs sponsored by each state association. Each PAC is a fund that supports the campaigns of candidates for public office who understand issues important to insurance agents and financial advisors. IFAPAC's goal is to help the associations advance the legislative and regulatory interests of the members of NAIFA. While any U.S. citizen can contribute to IFAPAC, only members of local NAIFA associations may be solicited to do so. Contributions must be voluntary. Contributions are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes.

Of approximately 4,600 political action committees registered with the Federal Election Commission, IFAPAC ranks in the top tier. IFAPAC is the largest insurance PAC in the country. In the last election cycle, the national IFAPAC contributed approximately $1.1 million to federal candidates and committees.
