FIRST!

The word "first" brings to mind many different thoughts. The excitement of competition by being the first to cross the finish line. Perhaps the joy of seeing your first born came to mind. Or maybe it was your first true love. I remember my first life insurance sale. It happened on my first day after serving in the U.S. Navy to my first referral! It wasn't a significant face amount, $25,000. Enough to take care of final expenses with a little left over, but it was my first sale on the first day of my career! I was excited. I knew this was a good "omen".

Then reality set in. This career is challenging. It's hard to get in front of the right prospects. There's so much to learn and not enough time. I am here to do good and people reject what I have to offer. Worse yet, they can be rude. Did I think about quitting? You bet! I distinctly remember 7 times getting ready to march into my manager's office and announce my resignation. After 22 years in this wonderful career, I feel blessed that something or someone kept me from doing so.

Having a support network is so important at every stage of your career. In the beginning, we operate on faith. Family and close friends want to see us succeed, so they can be counted on for that word of encouragement. We also need the trusted counsel of our sales managers, trainers and general agents. After all, they hired us because they saw qualities of success in us.

There is another group that is vitally important -- the veteran agents. These are the colleagues who have slogged through the same trenches a new agent experiences. They've built a clientele, hired their first employee and perhaps opened their own office. New agents need the wise words, insight and vision that a veteran can provide.

I know NAIFA-Jacksonville is capable of being first on the list for new and veteran agents as the place to find that support. You've elected a creative and passionate Board that has spent the summer on several key issues. Increasing our membership rolls is first on the list. Everyone needs to share the story of why this is the first and best association to represent our industry. In addition, we have developed events for the year to increase participation and provide first class sales and marketing advice to our members. We're one of the first to offer the new 5-hour Ethics CE course in October. At the first of the year, we're going to have an evening event to recognize our members for their professional and community achievements. All year long, you can expect us to put you first.

I am excited about our first meeting of the year on September 24th. Reserve the time on your schedule. We'll have more details on the events and programs. Put your association first as a resource for camaraderie, enrichment and advocacy. You may end up crossing the finish line first in your agency!

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month!

Life Insurance Awareness Month There's a growing crisis of underinsurance -- too many Americans without adequate life insurance. According to LIMRA, 30% of U.S. households have no life insurance whatsoever. That's why each September Life Happens coordinates Life Insurance Awareness Month. This industry-wide campaign is aimed at encouraging all Americans to take stock of their life insurance needs.

This campaign also offers you the perfect opportunity to talk to people in your community about their life insurance needs - at a time when life insurance may already be on their minds. Life Happens offers you a wide range of tools and resources to make that job easier.

This year, Life Happens has invited retired NFL MVP quarterback Boomer Esiason to return for a second year as the LIAM celebrity spokesperson. Click HERE for more information about this year's public awareness campaign and how to utilize LIAM in your business plan.

Young Advisors Team Update

Rebecca Brothers Becky Brothers
YAT Chair and Board Member

Welcome to NAIFA-Jacksonville's 2014-15 Year. We have many exciting things for our YAT's and our entire membership this year. First, please know everyone can be a YAT at Heart and that we appreciate your continued support of our local YAT's, their development, and future success in our industry. Our YAT vision this year is to grow our local YAT Membership by identifying local YAT's members and non-members by involving YOU -- yes, all of YOU in Jacksonville's membership, inviting YAT's, members and non-members, as guests to luncheons, socials, and state events- i.e. DOH and State Conference. YOU are the KEY to our YAT's SUCCESS.

Young Advisors Team Please promote YAT and NAIFA in your culture at the office. In our vision to build a strong YAT Network with local professionals, Bar Associations, and the FiCPA' s Young CPA Committee we need YOU on our TEAM as well as your leadership and support. The success of our local YAT Initiative isn't done by YAT's alone. It's done as a chapter, it's done as a team, the success and growth of our YAT's and chapter is done through YOU, NAIFA-Jacksonville.

Starting off the year we want to begin with NAIFA-Florida's Top 40 Under 40. Start promoting it now. This should be promoted year round and at every meeting. The recognition you receive state wide along with the press release has a positive impact for the advisor and the advisor's firm. Any advisor 40 years or under may apply member or not. If selected as one of NAIFA-Florida's Top 40 Under 40 the selectee will need to be a member by the set deadline (usually in May) in order to receive the award. Please see myself or Cheryl Canzanella or a member of the YAT Committee with questions. Details are available on our website along with the application. Click HERE for more information. Profiles of all Four Under 40 winners appear in the September/October 2014 issue of Advisor Today.

Please remember to watch our Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter accounts for important updates and news on important industry socials and mixers coming your way and remember, the more the merrier. All of NAIFA-Jacksonville's membership is welcome to attend any YAT event we have. We encourage and welcome your participation and what a great way to LEAD by EXAMPLE and show your support for your own YAT's and new advisors. Let's start this year off strong! I CHALLENGE each of you to bring a NEW YAT to our next luncheon as your guest. I promise you I will. Let's see how many of you will rise to the challenge.

See you in September -- Game on!

NAIFA-Jacksonville Blood Drives Cancelled

Alicia S. Burst Submitted by Alicia Burst
Community Service Chair

After countless years of NAIFA-Jacksonville (formerly JAIFA) hosting these events, it's unfortunate to report that the Blood Alliance has cancelled all of our future mobile drives.

Their decision was based on the lack of participation over the last three drives. It only took one producing insufficient numbers to put us in a category that deemed us not worthwhile or profitable. After all, it is a business and they cannot continue to sustain these losses.

After meeting with our new relationship manager from the Blood Alliance, they've asked if they can periodically call upon our group to assist in times of crunch or emergencies. I have agreed to do this and have also made the commitment to continue acknowledging and rewarding one NAIFA-related donor by drawing a name twice a year for APPS' $100 cash drawing.

Please don't stop saving lives. Go to any of the convenient locations around the city. Let them know you are donating on behalf of NAIFA-Jacksonville, as these reports will be made available to us so we can maintain the tradition. Every one of you does make the difference.

Thank you to so many of you who have consistently donated, and I hope you will continue to do so.

NAIFA Difficulties Faced by New ACA Enrollees Show
the Importance of Professional Advisors

As the Affordable Care Act was being drafted and then implemented over the past few years, NAIFA has worked hard to ensure that health advisors remain part of the system. Services and expertise provided by brokers and agents are important to consumers across the board, from small business owners trying to adjust to new requirements to individuals who have never had health coverage before and do not know how it works.

A recent New York Times article illustrates a problem faced by many consumers who did not consult a licensed advisor. Salwa Shabazz selected a low-premium plan on the federal marketplace after speaking with a marketplace customer service representative, the Times article says. Only after she was enrolled did she discover the plan has a deductible and requires copayments that are beyond her ability to pay.

But help is available. A recent survey of NAIFA members found that nearly three-quarters (73 percent) had enrolled clients in health plans through either the federal or a state exchange or both. NAIFA members are trained and licensed. They are subject to continuing education requirements, and many have years of experience dealing with insurance companies and the health care system.

"NAIFA members are here to help," said NAIFA President John Nichols. "In fact, we've dedicated our professional lives to helping people understand complex insurance and fianancial matters. The ACA has altered the landscape of health insurance, so the expertise of NAIFA members is as important now as it ever was."

The NAIFA Blog provides timely analysis, context and commentary on important issues shaping the industry. The blog also is a place to present the role of the agent and the services they provide, and it will cover newsworthy happenings within the association. Visit the blog at www.naifablog.com.

IFAPAC
Please consider a contribution to YOUR Political Action Committee!

The Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Action Committee (IFAPAC) is a term used to describe collectively the PAC sponsored by NAIFA at the federal level and the PACs sponsored by each state association. Each PAC is a fund that supports the campaigns of candidates for public office who understand issues important to insurance agents and financial advisors. IFAPAC's goal is to help the associations advance the legislative and regulatory interests of the members of NAIFA. While any U.S. citizen can contribute to IFAPAC, only members of local NAIFA associations may be solicited to do so. Contributions must be voluntary. Contributions are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes.

Of approximately 4,600 political action committees registered with the Federal Election Commission, IFAPAC ranks in the top tier. IFAPAC is the largest insurance PAC in the country. In the last election cycle, the national IFAPAC contributed approximately $1.1 million to federal candidates and committees.
