Message From the President

S. Roger Dominey, CLU, CFP®, ChFC

Our 2013-2014 membership year comes to a close at the end of the month and we are still working hard to increase membership both locally and on a state level. We hope to become #1 in the federation by June 30th and your help is needed to recruit a new member!

Our membership numbers are important because it makes our voice louder in Tallahassee and Washington.  Over 700 NAIFA members were recently in DC meeting with our legislators on issues that affect both us and our clients and that 75 million American families depend on us for their financial security, quite often at the worst possible moments of their lives. We continue to be the largest association in the country that continues the fight to protect the interests of our industry and our clients, and your support is appreciated.

We will welcome summer with our final Membership Luncheon Meeting of the Association year on Wednesday, June 25th at the University Club. Check our website for complete details and I look forward to seeing you there.
Have a Great Summer!
Have a GREAT summer!

Roger

Number 1
UPDATE - HOT OFF THE PRESSES!!

At the opening bell today we now
stand only 24 away from #1!

THANK YOU for responding to the calls! Barely a few weeks ago I wrote to you telling you we were 48 members behind NAIFA-California, with barely a month to go. But because of YOUR action we've chopped that lead in half! Because of YOU we've made a major dent in the big lead they once held.

As you know, at stake is the claim to the title of #1 state association in the Federation! The membership year ends June 30, so we have only a few weeks left to get this done!

LET'S FINISH THIS NOW!!

Please reach out to that one person near you who isn't, but should be, a member of this great association! Tell them our story, and how they can become a part of the next chapter!

WIN $500

Could you use $500 in your pocket?? Let me rephrase that - do you WANT $500 in your pocket?? Of course you do!! All you have to do is recruit 5 or more new members between now and June 30. It's open to all NAIFA members. Just make sure your name is be listed as the sponsor, and that the applications make it to us on/before June 30. Make that happen and you've got $500 in your pocket!

Just in time for that great conference coming up in Delray Beach!! Click HERE to check out who's already signed up to go!

Thank you for your membership! Thank you for taking the time to read this. And thank you for taking the time to act now! Reach out to that colleague or associate in your office, in the agency next door, or the firm down the street and ensure they join before June 30.

Congressional Conference Recap

2014 NAIFA Congressional Conference

On May 20th and 21st, more than 700 NAIFA members attended the association's Congressional Conference in Washington, DC.

NAIFA members paid visits to their Senators and Representatives asking them to carefully consider the negative effects the Camp tax reform draft would have on taxpayers. Proposals in the draft make it more difficult and more expensive for Americans to achieve financial security. The draft includes half a trillion dollars worth of changes to the tax code that would directly or indirectly impact the insurance industry and our clients in an unfavorable manner.

Specifically, nearly $225 billion comes from adverse and complex changes to retirement savings. Another $87 billion in new revenue would come from changes affecting certain life insurance markets, and insurance product and company taxes. Finally, $272 billion comes from adverse changes to the cost of doing business.

Our members also spoke with Members of Congress regarding NARAB II, stressing the importance of removing unnecessarily burdensome aspects of the producer licensing system. There is strong bipartisan support for NARAB II and Congressmen were asked to ensure that the legislation is passed this year.

New NAIFA Congressional Council

 NAIFA Congressional Council

Dear NAIFA Member:

The NAIFA Board of Trustees this year approved the establishment of a new program named the Congressional Council. The Congressional Council formally launched during the recent NAIFA Congressional Conference in Washington, DC.

The Congressional Council stems from the NAIFA Steering Council, which was carried over from The Association of Health Insurance Advisors' (AHIA) union with NAIFA. The purpose of the Steering Council has been to protect our members' businesses from adverse legislation and regulation. Steering Council dues have served as donations to the NAIFA War Chest and used to fund high priority - often emergency - legislative and regulatory initiatives that exceed NAIFA's budget. Examples of how War Chest funds may be used include:
  • Activation of the grassroots network
  • Promotion of the value of the agent-advisor through enhanced public relations
  • Enhancement of lobbying efforts to influence lawmakers, especially members of Congress
  • Issue-specific targeted media campaigns using television, print, radio, and/or new media
  • Involvement of members in Days on the Hill
The Congressional Council is a "repackaged" version of the Steering Council program and is designed to maximize NAIFA's donor giving programs - IFAPAC and the War Chest. Congressional Council Members contribute both a minimum $2,500 annual contribution to IFAPAC and a minimum $500 annual contribution to the War Chest. In exchange for their investment in NAIFA's political programs, members receive the following benefits:
  • New - Advisory Group membership to inform the NAIFA Government Relations Committee
  • New - U.S. Capitol Evening Tour during the Congressional Conference
  • New - Exclusive Membership-only Lapel Pin
  • New - Public Recognition at NAIFA meetings and in NAIFA publications
  • Subscription to National Journal
  • Subscription to the weekly, policy-oriented Monday Morning Memo
The Advisory Group will be made up exclusively of Congressional Council members. The group's role will be to provide insight and feedback to the NAIFA Government Relations team and the NAIFA Government Relations Committee as they work to submit formal policy recommendations to the NAIFA Board of Trustees. The group may be asked to informally advise NAIFA staff on issues related to a member's professional experience and expertise; may receive policy or industry-related surveys; may be asked to assist NAIFA staff with technical data; and may have opportunities to provide comments and specifics on legislation and regulations that fall within their areas of expertise.

If you, like me, wish to be a part of this important new group, please contact Jill Hoffman at 703-770-8158.

Sincerely,

Dr. Susan B. Waters, CAE
Chief Executive Officer

Your Support of IFAPAC is Appreciated!

IFAPAC
Please consider a contribution to YOUR Political Action Committee!

The Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Action Committee (IFAPAC) is a term used to describe collectively the PAC sponsored by NAIFA at the federal level and the PACs sponsored by each state association. Each PAC is a fund that supports the campaigns of candidates for public office who understand issues important to insurance agents and financial advisors. IFAPAC's goal is to help the associations advance the legislative and regulatory interests of the members of NAIFA. While any U.S. citizen can contribute to IFAPAC, only members of local NAIFA associations may be solicited to do so. Contributions must be voluntary. Contributions are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes.

Of approximately 4,600 political action committees registered with the Federal Election Commission, IFAPAC ranks in the top tier. IFAPAC is the largest insurance PAC in the country. In the last election cycle, the national IFAPAC contributed approximately $1.1 million to federal candidates and committees.
