Spring has Sprung!

April showers bring May flowers, and it's also a time to happily put the stress of Tax Day behind us.  With the tax code fresh on our minds, it's also perfect timing for NAIFA's Congressional Conference that takes place in our nation's capital on May 20th and 21st.  If you can't make it, be sure to check out the advocacy resources at www.naifa.org to keep up with the issues.  Your voice will surely be requested on our industry's behalf in the coming weeks.

We have a special program this month with the Northeast FL chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals so we needed to adjust our regular monthly luncheon date closer to the beginning of the month.  We're meeting next Tuesday, April 8th for a special primer leading up to Disability Insurance Awareness Month in May.  It will be a terrific networking opportunity, and our attendees will earn one hour of CE credit while enjoying our guest speaker from the Council for Disability Awareness, Barry Lundquist.  Complete details can be found below and we look forward to seeing you there.  Invite a non-member and register TODAY because time is running out!

Be sure to read through our monthly newsletter and make plans to attend all of our upcoming events, welcome our newest members, and take advantage of all the benefits that are available to you as a NAIFA-Jacksonville member.

Day On The Hill Recap

NAIFA-Jacksonville was well represented at 2014 Legislative Day on the Hill!

Florida CFO Jeff Atwater

Meeting with Florida CFO Jeff Atwater

NAIFA Day on the Hill brought many opportunities for NAIFA YAT members to learn more about legislative issues and the opportunity to meet with our State elected officials. YAT's are very familiar with the Florida Financial Services because of their required industry licenses and regulatory supervision the State's Financial Services oversees, but many have asked who is this Chief Financial Officer and how does he impact us?

NAIFA-Florida's YAT members had the great opportunity to spend 25 minutes with CFO Jeff Atwater to educate him about hot topic concerns and how we as the next generation of Young Financial Advisors can positively effect change. Over twenty YAT's listened to CFO Atwater stress the importance of NAIFA building credibility and relationships with his office in order to have our voices heard. CFO Atwater went on to say, "elected officials make decisions based on trustworthy organizations who police call their members and demonstrate a strong ethical core." This resonated strongly with many of the YAT's because our business depends on client-advisor trust, but few ever considered the advisor-regulator relationship and how a few bad apples can undermine the integrity of the service we provide to our clients.

The CFO's message was straightforward, how do we as NAIFA's future leaders position ourselves and our organization moving forward. Thanks to everyone who attended Day on the Hill and look forward to seeing everyone (plus their guest) next year.

Microscope on the First Quarter 2014

(It's not about the punishment)

We're at the end of the first quarter and most people start beating themselves up for what they have not accomplished.

Wrong viewpoint!

Look at where you are going. As I get older, I put more weight on a person's ability to manage and discipline themselves.
"Talent plays its part, of course, but talent or aptitude is not the difference. Every day in every field or endeavor we see talented men whose special abilities are wasting away, contributing little to the success of the individual or the good of mankind, and every day we observe others who are "less gifted" but who accomplish more."  - B.N. Woodson

All you need to do is this: beginning this very day, stop doing one thing you know you should not do, and start doing each day one thing you know you should do!

That's all! Then a little later, when you have two items mastered, try two more... and then two more. If you did this for two or more habits, your second quarter productiveness would be a lot better -- even infinitely better!

NAIFA and College for Financial Planning form LUTCF Advisory Group

John Nichols, MSM, CLU Submitted by John Nichols, MSM, CLU
NAIFA National President

Dear NAIFA Members:

I am pleased to announce that NAIFA and the College for Financial Planning have formed an Advisory Group for the Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF) designation in support of the re-launch of the program in July 2015. The group will provide strategic guidance in three areas: subject matter expertise for the new LUTCF curriculum, application to the workplace, and areas for future development of the LUTCF program.

Working with this group, the College for Financial Planning will employ an industry and academically recognized best-practice for developing curriculum. This Content Validation Study approach defines the critical behaviors required for effective job performance which can then help identify the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics required to successfully perform the job functions and tasks.

We are honored to welcome these distinguished industry leaders to participate in the development of the new LUTCF designation program and look forward to their advice and direction as NAIFA and CFFP prepare to launch this dynamic and innovative curriculum for financial professionals.

NAIFA and CFFP announced the partnership in February. Details on the new LUTCF program will be provided in September 2014, including information about the new course curriculum, program completion requirements, class scheduling, pricing, and moderator recruitment. Registration for the new LUTCF program will begin after January 1, 2015, and classes are scheduled to begin July 2015.

For more information about CFFP, click here. For more details about NAIFA's LUTCF, check the FAQ page on the NAIFA web site throughout the year.

Sincerely,

John F. Nichols, MSM, CLU
