Membership Round Up!

Frank Mantay, CFPSubmitted by Frank Mantay, CFP
Membership Chair

Join us on Monday, August 26th as we beat the heat and put sizzle to our membership numbers.  Growing our members is vital in meeting our association's mission.  When NAIFA leadership speaks to legislators about interests important to your business, the more members they represent, the more power our message has. Plus we've all heard the expression, "the more the merrier." Well it's true with our association as well. We want to increase the number and diversity of our members in every way.

Our goal for this year is 300 members! Assuming 100% retention, that translates into 24 new members by June 30th, 2014.  With everyone's effort and participation we can meet this goal.  If you know someone in our industry, you can recruit them!

To serve on our membership committee please join us at:
Mantay & Company offices at 3840 Belfort Rd #101, Jacksonville, FL 32216 on Monday, August 26th at 4:00 pm.

You can also participate remotely from your own office. Please contact Frank in advance.

We'll discuss strategy, goals, awards and recognition along with fun for our committee members and contact current and prospective members. Participants will enjoy summer time treats and rewards to use during their Labor Day weekend. There are special incentives available for YAT participants. Call Frank Mantay, committee chair, at (904) 443-2511 or email [email protected] to learn more.

September 2013 is Life Insurance
Awareness Month in Jacksonville!

September 2013 is Life Insurance Awareness Month in Jacksonville! In an effort to encourage citizens to learn more about life insurance and its benefits, Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown has proclaimed September 2013 as Life Insurance Awareness Month.

CLICK HERE FOR A PDF OF MAYOR BROWN'S PROCLAMATION!

The proclamation coincides with the LIFE Foundation's annual public awareness campaign. There's a growing crisis of too many Americans not having adequate life insurance protection.  According to the industry research group LIMRA, 30 percent of US households have no life insurance whatsoever.  Today there are 11 million fewer American households covered by life insurance compared with six years ago.  A majority of families either have no life insurance or not enough, leaving them one accident or terminal illness away from a financial catastrophe for their loved ones.

Life Insurance Awareness Month

Boomer EsiasonServing as LIAM spokesperson this year is former NFL MVP quarterback Boomer Esiason, who will be sharing his story as part of Life Insurance Awareness Month this September.

Boomer lost his mother when he was just seven years old, an experience that shaped who he is today, both personally and professionally.

The Squeaky Wheel

We've all heard the expression, "...the squeaky wheel gets the grease."  The gist of this expression is that in order to receive help, advancement, or some other want or need, it is necessary to be heard, and heard loudly.

In our democratic government of the people, policy is formed by legislators in response to constituents or people with the loudest voice near the ear of the legislator.  Long ago, people discovered that the best way to have legislation favorable to their particular cause enacted was to help the legislator to become elected or re-elected.  People also discovered that if they banded together and combined their resources, their "voices" became louder and more powerful.  Thus were born political action committees or PACs.

NAIFA has long put forward one of the larger PACs in Washington.  NAIFA supports PACs in every state as well.  Legislators realize that NAIFA's 200,000* members represent a large group of voters, a fact that allows NAIFA members an audience with every U.S. Senator and Congressman/woman.

While speaking directly with legislators is important, it is more important to have them agree to protect our products and services for our clients and ourselves.  That is where the PAC comes into play.  There are many political action committees in Washington and the state houses that continuously lobby for their own agendas.  Additionally, politicians are constantly bombarded by various lobbying groups to fund various interests for states, corporations, and industries.  Politicians decide to where utilize tax dollars to fund these interests, but tax dollars are a limited resource. The end result is legislators attempting to generate revenue by increasing the supply of tax dollars by raising taxes and eliminating the tax-favored status of structures like permanent life insurance and retirement plans.

In our state, we enjoy an exemption from sales tax on many of the products and services we sell to our clients.  Whenever the state is in a revenue crunch, theses exemptions come under scrutiny.  If this exemption was ever eliminated professionals in the insurance and financial services field would have to pay this sales tax out of their own earnings since no method exists to pass these taxes onto the client.

NAIFA needs your help to keep our wheel squeaking loudly.  There are some that fund the pack generously and regularly but many do not.  These "freeloaders" must help as well.  Webster defines freeloading as "imposing on another's generosity without sharing in the cost or responsibility involved."

Please be involved.  Get your colleagues involved as well.  If you are a NAIFA member do your part to contribute to our political action committee.  It only costs $8.35 per month to be a Century contributor.  If you are not a member, join us.  There are over 1,200,000 licensed life insurance agents** in the United States.  If all would join NAIFA and contribute only $8.35 per month to the PAC, NAIFA would easily be the force all legislators would want to help.

Click HERE to make your IFAPAC Contribution today!  If you'd like to volunteer and get involved please contact our local NAIFA office right now at [email protected] to sign up to help!  To all of those already doing their share, thank you one and all!
